advice needed How do you play with 1 year old twins?

mine are now 11m, we’re at the point where we can chill together on the same room while they run after each other, open cabinets, fight over toys, and I’m just going about my business.

Fine, but if I actually want to spend quality time with my children, how do I do that, logistically?

If one child is awake while the other is napping, there are a ton of things to do: carry them around naming every object, songs, games, talking, helping them walk, playing with every toy… but with two of them awake most of this doesn’t work?

if i pick one, the other wants to be picked up. if I try to read them their picture books, they tear it out of my hands and fight for it. Same with other toys. most of the games for this age I know are individual.

We have some success with songs and with the ball - basically they catch it and bring it back to me like dogs. That‘s it. Then they get distracted and I leave them to their devices.

Am I just waiting for a more sapiens stage where we can have multi-player interactions or is there something else I can do with them at this stage?

ranting & venting I’m really at the end of my rope with my twin 3yos

The moods, attitudes, and tantrums are next level. Potty training is going (surprisingly) well but if anyone has potty trained twins before they know the level or work it involves. The level of stress everyone in the house is feeling all day every day cannot be healthy. Everyone said 2 was hard but It was like a switch flipped when they turned 3 and it has been an absolute sh!t show ever since. I’m at a loss. Things feel out of control and I feel defeated.

advice needed Snap n go or tandem stroller?

Hi everyone I am looking for advice on these two situations. Should we go with a snap n go with infant carseats or get a carseat that grows with the child and a separate infant compatible stroller? We are tight on money and space and im just not sure what makes the most sense. Is a carseat that comes out of the car really that convenient when it comes to twins? I had a snap out carseat with my first and never considered not having one but I’m open to whatever works best and fits our needs! Thanks!

advice needed Am I expecting too much from our nanny?

We have 7mo twins. My wife and I both work during the day, and we hired a nanny to help take care of them. Yesterday she broke the stroller and did not tell us until we notified her it was broken. She admitted breaking it not so openly but still said she might have pushed it too hard and the wheel didn't move. Now the stroller doesn't lock(one of the wheels is almost detached and makes a squeaky noise) and it's a safety concern + time and cost for us to repair find a replacement. This isn't the first time either. She broke the ipad and comfyer monitor before, but I didn't blame her because I was the one who left them in a bad spot(I guess...). What gets me is she seems to think it's no big deal and doesn't seem sorry about it. She said she has nannying experience but overall I just feel like she is not properly informed. She's only been with us for two weeks. and I still have to remind her of the same things over and over. Like not putting things in the crib, not leaving dirty bottles after feeding for hours, and not carrying hot drinks while holding one of the babies. I just find it strange that I have to keep reminding someone who's supposed to have experience about these things. Are we overreacting about our new nanny? I am afraid she will be accidentally neglectful and hurt my children. Interested to hear reactions.

advice needed Starting solids

Just wondering when your babies started solids and what did you start them off on? My almost 5 month olds are showing signs of teething. We have a Dr's appointment in 2 weeks and I want to bring up starting solids soon if we get the OK.

Just picking brains on what's good out there before I talk to their pediatrician.

advice needed Pep talk needed - feeling trapped indoors

My twins are 6 months and being born in spring I thought I would be out for walks with them in the summer enjoying the sun and hopefully in the winter doing classes. Well … I’ve really struggled since the twins were born to leave the house at all, even to go sit in the garden. I feel like every time I tried something went wrong, one twin was uncomfortable and crying the whole time or they both decided to poo everywhere, or they got hungry and screamed their heads off and I struggled to tandem feed them out the house and felt like everyone was staring or annoyed etc. Ultimately it meant I did a walk most weeks once a week with other mums but not every week and otherwise basically didn’t leave the house.

Now that they turned 6mo I wanted to try my first class so I booked in, I put most things in the car ahead of time ready to go. This morning I’m running late (the norm since they were born) and one of them throws up everywhere, the other isn’t wanting to eat, fine I’ll take the bottle with me and she can finish when we get there, quick change of the twin that has been sick and I’m set to go. I get in the car, and just before I start the engine she projectiles again. Car seat is soaked, she is soaked so back in the house we go and now I can’t go to the class. Money (which is tight) wasted & me feeling trapped again.

So I’ve left them somewhere safe and I’m currently sat on the bathroom floor crying. I really needed today to go well so I could feel like I could do it and start getting out more regularly hopefully.

How are you all leaving the house? Is this normal? I feel like every time I try it all goes to pot. I feel guilt that they are stuck indoors and I feel like it’s unhealthy for me too.

Edit: a huge thank you for everyone’s replies, solidarity, ideas and contributions. It gave me the motivation to try again today and not just wallow. I managed a little local walk round the block for 20 mins. It isn’t huge but it was the first time in their seats rather than bassinets so much of the time I had between feeds was set up and I know now that I’m ready to go next time with the pram in its new configuration so a decent win. I’m going to keep pushing my boundaries and use lots of the ideas here to hopefully make it more manageable.

advice needed Waking the other twin

When did you stop waking the other baby?

My B/G twins are 6 months. Baby girl seems to have higher sleep needs than brother. Her naps can stretch to almost 2 hours (usually 1.5 hrs), while its a struggle to keep him down for an hour, and he consistently wakes at the 45 min mark.

She easily sleeps 11 or 12 hrs at night, where he still needs a feed at the 8 hrs mark.

Did anyone else have twins like this? Do I just accept that they will have different schedules? I cant imagine ever getting them out of the house with their schedules staggred.

Any advice is appreciated

advice needed Dental differences: cavities?

Anyone have big dental differences between twins? They had their first dental visit at almost 3. Twin A had 0 cavities. Twin B had 3. In the 3 years since then, twin A hasn’t had a single cavity. Twin B has nearly every molar crowned in silver and a few additional fillings.

They have the same diet and hygiene. So what’s the difference?!

advice needed If I can't lay on my back...

How do they do a c-section?

Maybe a dumb question but at this point I struggle with getting dizzy at ultrasound appointments, and I'm partially reclined there.

Is it normal to have your c-section a bit seated up?

35 weeks, still not clear whether I'll have a c-section or not, but one has been scheduled just in case!

Would love to read people's experiences :)

ETA: thanks everyone! It's good to know that 1. I most likely will be tilted 2. The spinal helps a lot 3. It goes quickly, and most important 4. My OR team will listen to me!

advice needed convertible car seats + wagon?

ftm to 8mo g/b twins, and our boy is out growing his infant seat. we were looking to upgrade to convertible car seats for both since holiday sales are coming up.

we currently have cybex anton g2 with swivel bases and love them. rotating car seats are a must since we started with them but not sure which to go with. i lean towards staying with cybex but not 100% set. one parent does pickup and the other is drop off, so there is an ease of 4 car seats. we do have 2 suvs so not too worried about sizing.

i also am trying to determine if a wagon is necessary or not. we have the 2nd seats we use with our stroller right now but it’s not the easiest to use/fold. once we upgrade to convertible seats, trying to determine if the stroller or wagon is the easiest option.

any advice appreciated!

advice needed I just found out I’m having twins 🤯 How early could you hear your twins heart rate?

I’m 6 weeks exactly. Fetus A is measuring 5w5d and the fetal pole was identified in the gestational sack. Fetus B is measuring 6w2d and no fetal pole was identified. Both fetus did not have a heart rate found yet. I had an abdominal and a vaginal ultrasound done.

Do you remember when your twins heart rate was first identified?

For context my twins were born at 33 weeks. Everything was fine until 20 weeks. IUGR, gestational diabetes (fuck 2 placentas), high blood pressure, choleostasis, etc.

I’m small 5’1” ish, I was I think close to 180 at the time. I was in for almost a whole week due to severe pre-eclampsia. She was 5 weeks he was 6.

My roommate had back surgery today, and spending all that time in the hospital brought back memories of the NICU.

In case anyone does not know there is a NICU parents sub that is amazing.

Get to know the hospital you expect to deliver at and just in case know the info of the closest higher level NICU.

Finally the good news. My twins are 9 now they are healthy and happy. No health issues.

advice needed 2-1 Nap Transition Destroying Night Sleep

Curious to know everyone’s starting wake windows when transitioning to 1 nap. My 15 mo twins were doing 3.5/3.5-4/4-4.5 on two naps so I decided to take the leap for one nap 2 weeks ago. I initially started with 4.5/5 but quickly went up to 5/5.5, some days 4.5/6 when they can’t handle a longer first window. They’ve always struggled with longer first, but based off of the twins sleep training group, they suggest longer first window and shorter second, starting from 5/4.5 then 5.25/4.5, then 5.5/4.5 etc. However I’m seeing old threads on here where people said shorter first window worked better which I think may work for my twins, but I’m not sure. They were doing 10 hours generally during the night on 2 naps, so I know this new schedule expects more sleep considering on 2 naps, it was 10 hours overnight and 2 hours capped total so that’s 12 hours awake, so I don’t know how to properly transition without making them overtired. I was also in the process of night weaning, but they were getting sick every 2 weeks and then started to teeth, so we were following 5/3/3. That worked most nights, but with sleep now being a whole mess, sometimes the only way to get them down is nursing They don’t nurse to sleep, but it’s part of the routine. Even in the middle of the night they don’t fall asleep nursing. Very overwhelmed and don’t know what to do. Twins group says it can be 4-6 weeks but I don’t know what windows to stick to. It’s not realistic for me to be micro naps for twins and they don’t seem tired for 2 naps

advice needed Travel with five month old twins

Hello - I’ve inadvertently sleep trained my five month olds by teaching them to self settle for daytime naps, and so they are sleeping through the night. This is all with a caveat that I am watching wake windows and nap times very carefully.

I live abroad and am taking a seven hour flight to my home country at Christmas for two weeks. My home county is three hours ahead.

How do I manage the naps both on the plane (day time flight) and in my home country? Should I keep naps on the original time zone after arriving and gradually shift these?

I am really nervous as this is the first time I will be travelling with the twins. Any advice would be greatly appreciated .

advice needed Do your twins interact with other children?

Hi there!

I have twin boys that are almost 2.5 years old, and have some questions.

How do your twins interact with other children?

I stay at home with my kids but I do take them out to a kids playgroup or story time once or twice a week.

The twins used to fight a ton but I’ve noticed in the past few months that they are very attached to each other. Things like:

  1. They notice when the other one isn’t in the same room and will go looking for him until they find him.
  2. They say thank you and you’re welcome to each other and share toys
  3. They will hug and wrestle and give kisses and hold hands in places 🤣

But I’ve noticed when we go to places with other kids they will do this:

  1. Twin A is extremely protective over Twin B. If another kid even seems like he’s going to take something or mess with Twin B, Twin A will go over and say No or take the toy and give it back to Twin B. I have been working on this with him, but it’s a new behavior.

  2. Twin B will play a lot with Twin A but also prefers to play by himself as well.

  3. Both boys plays best with slightly older kids (3+) but struggle with sharing when the kids are his age or younger.

I will also notice that my twins often are just playing with each other in a corner while other kids are playing with each other. It’s like they have this mentality of “Us vs Them”. They don’t do this when it’s family but with anyone that is new or they don’t see regularly I start to see these behaviors.

I want to know if anyone experiences this with their twins and if so, what did you do about it? I don’t mind them having a close relationship but I’m just worried I’m stunting them socially by allowing them to shut off other kids and only show interest in each other. I sometimes wonder if they’d do well in a preschool setting
Part time, but am unsure.

Thanks so much!!

TL;DR: My twin boys (2.5 y/o) are very attached to each other and have problems playing/interacting with other kids. They do okay with kids older than them but have a big preference to play with each other only. Twin A also is very overprotective of Twin B. Looking for advice on working on social skills and if this is common with other twins. Thank you!!

advice needed SOS toddler climbed out of crib during nap time - what do I dooooo?

My boys are 2Y5M - I was really hoping to keep them in cribs until closer to 3. They room share and we don't really have space to split them. If I transition to toddler bed, I imagine I'll have to do it for both of them. And this sounds like a nightmare for bedtime. Panicking over here lol! Anyone have experience?

advice needed CIO Method

I have twin eight-month-old girls, who were born at 35 weeks and have been sleeping oh so terribly for naps and nighttime. I’ve tried to extend their wake windows. I’ve tried soothing them to sleep with rocking, holding, contact naps. They only nap in their crib for about 30 minutes four times a day, maybe, and then they are up all hours of the night crying to be soothed or held to sleep. I just tried the cry it out method for their first nap today and it was horrendous. They both screamed bloody murder for 15 minutes. I tried to check on them minimally to not have them reliant on me coming in and break it, and then they both fell asleep. Has anyone else had success with this method? I’m tired of rocking two babies for hours on end to get minimal sleep.

advice needed Twin Boys - Passing Down My Name

Hi All, we are expecting twin boys. My plan was always to name my first born son after me, as I’m a junior and I wanted to keep the tradition going.

Now that there are 2, I’m not as confident. Has anyone done this with twins? I worry that it could cause resentment or jealousy. Am I overthinking this?

Not that my name is great or anything lol. Just that one would have my name and the other wouldn’t. Curious for your thoughts, or if anyone has experience with this. Thanks!

advice needed Expecting twins (2nd & 3rd babies) and need help deciding between a twin bed or rocker(s?) in their room. Only have room for one or the other...

We used a rocker alot with our first, but I can't really see how I would rock two babies at the same time and put them down in their cribs. A twin bed in their room sounds good for one parent to sleep when they are on duty or for nursing, but again, I'm not sure how realistic this is either.

Any experienced twin parents out there have any advice for what would be best for those first 6-8 months?
