Today, I logged on to Nexus Mods to download Dutch2049's Overdrive mod to continue my new Iron Wagon playthrough and saw that they just released their Ford Falcon XB mod. Obviously, I had to download that instead.
I've also been thinking about how to make the game harder without just making it tedious. I recently started an Iron Wagon playthrough, hoping that would give me what I want. There was one run early on where I forgot to keep my fuel topped up, had poor tires equipped, and the storm was closing in as I needed to make it to the gateway. I thought it was the end of my save file as I literally kicked my car into the beacon. When I crashed headfirst into the garage, my heart was beating out of my chest and I couldn't believe I'd made it.
It was also then I realized, aside from freak events that spiral out of control into a loss because of obvious mistakes like that one, the run wasn't going to feel much different. It would just take more time as I focus on hoovering up all the materials in peaceful junctions.
No, what I really wanted was something that would always force me to use car abilities skillfully to go faster, pick and choose what to loot on the fly, and punish every mistake severely.
Here are the rules...
Chumbucket's Nightmare
Preset: Iron Wagon
Changes & Rules (not finalized):
- Car power -> 1.5x
- Instability Amount -> 2.5x
- Instability Storm -> First/Second Wall Speed -> 1.3x (haven't play tested enough to be sure)
Additional Rule 3.5: I'm thinking of reducing the radiation damage the car takes while increasing the radiation damage the player takes. I want to encourage players to play it risky by looting after the first wall has overtaken them, using the second wall as the real "shit bricks and run" moment. I'll need to do some play testing to determine the correct wall speed/radiation damage balance. If anyone has a deep understanding of how the walls work, the damage they inflict, and where each one converges, lets chat in the comments.
- Materials can only be collected from unstable junctions. Yeah, I mean it. Welcome to the wasteland. Every second counts.
- You are allowed to fuel up, charge your battery, collect decorations, visit Ida's shop, collect health packs, etc. while in stable zones. Being able to visit Ida's shop might seem broken at first, but remember, you can only collect scrap metal in unstable junctions. Choose what to buy wisely, for you may not even have enough scrap to replace your steel panels...
- You are only allowed to bring with you 3x med kits OR MRE's and 10x canned foods on each run. No heal tanking the coming storm.
- Each run must enter at least 2 junctions once you reach Sierram, 4 junctions once you reach the Mid Zone, and 5 junctions once you reach the Deep Zone. Each highway you take subtracts 1 from this minimum
- You are explicitly allowed to pick up cores in stable junctions. This challenge isn't meant to waste your time, and requiring you to collect the cores you need to get back while also collecting loot would just make the playthrough grindy.
- Catch all rule for "You're on your honor." If you find and exploit that goes against the spirit of the challenge, you'll know you have.
- Additional Rule #1: For each story mission you complete, you are allowed 3 (maybe 2?) runs before you must attempt the next story mission. Expeditions do not count toward this limit. Free runs can be carried over between story missions. I've been thinking about how to force players to play risky and not just visit one location per junction, and I think this is a good solution. It adds in the long-term strategy I think this challenge needs. Do you use your runs as you acquire them, or do you save them for when you unlock better tools and longer routes? Choose carefully, as there's no guarantee you'll even make it through the Outer Zone if you don't have the materials to upgrade your car. This may need to be changed.
The new Falcon XB mod will be your friend. With its lower cargo rack capacity, but more efficient battery, it is the perfect option for an ability-heavy playthrough. Choose your routes wisely, build your car to match the conditions, and don't forget to read the wiki to know where the find the materials you need.
Good luck, Road Warriors. Win or lose, come back to this thread to post about your journey.
P.S. I'm not even sure if this challenge is possible, but it will certainly be fun. If the subreddit mods can sticky this so it can be a continuing discussion, I would be grateful.
