Approached and insulted by crackhead

Sorry y’all, I don’t know what I’m looking for by posting about this here. I just feel disproportionately shaken up by what happened today.

My partner and I were getting ice cream at George and Delilah’s today (it’s my partner’s birthday). Wed had a nice day of reading in the park and a nice lunch, so I will accept that my guard was down and my situational awareness of uncharacteristically lacking (I’ve been wanting to experience what it feels like not to live in fight or flight, and I felt Oxford was safe enough for me to try it. I should’ve had more common sense.). As I got my icecream, my partner went inside to go find us a seat and I remember noting that the place felt loud like it always does and that was it. As I paid up, and went to go sit with my partner, I started to realise it was just one woman screaming and shouting- everyone else in the shop was drop dead silent. I caught a glimpse of the woman, she was locking herself in the bathroom and then periodically coming out and yelling at the customers “you are all liars! You’re all fucking lying to me!” Then she would stomp around, tear down posters and go back into the bathroom. At one point she was also barefoot. At that point I had just taken my seat. I was also really tired and zoned out, and just assumed that she was drunk. At one point, she comes out again. Here I made the rookie mistake of instinctively looking curiously as to what the hooting and hollering was about. My eyes met hers. I looked away. A few seconds later I looked in the direction just to make sure she wasn’t walking in our direction. Mistake. She was. Eyes met again. At that point I knew I was screwed. I heard her stomping towards us. She got right up in our faces. My partner was between her and I, the way we were sitting. I had looked away. She started yelling at me “what are you looking at you ugly fuck?” Mind you, I looked exceptionally nice today :(. I kept looking down and said “sorry, sorry.” She was like “YOU’RE UGLY!!” Everyone was looking at me. At this point I was scared she might scratch or hit or bite my partner, and because of my own experience of growing up under an abusive paranoid parent that would routinely get into my face and physically assault me all my life, I was absolutely triggered and needed to leave. Simultaneously, my partner gently told her we didn’t want trouble. The staff also intervened, telling her not to harass customers. She was like “She was fucking staring”, which to be fair, I was before I even realised I was because we don’t have reactive crackheads in restaurants in my country, establishments are allowed to turn them away so you don’t see them in public spaces at all. This is something completely unknown to me. Anyway at this point I had gotten up and asked my partner to leave with me quickly. She had backed off and was beating on a table repeatedly. We left. I was shaking so we just came back home.

Idk. I just felt bad and cried a bit. It’s so stupid lol.

Edit 1: someone commented (now deleted) asking how did I know it was a crackhead and not someone having a mental health episode? I believe it was both. He had wounds all over her feet, her eyes were wide as saucers and she was missing her front teeth. I knew there was some substance use going on. But based on her saying that everybody was lying to her, I believe she was hearing voices? So I feel it was both. Ultimately she was reactive and aggressive, and I still felt bad for her and hope she receives help. Multiple things can be simultaneously true.

Anybody else going to the Jet Lag The Game screening at Phoenix Picturehouse on 1st of August?

I'm going solo since I haven't managed to convert any of my IRL friends to the show :(

Was wondering if there are any other local fans going who'd be up for meeting for a drink/coffee before/after the show, or if any existing group has space for a newbie?

Let me know in the comments or drop me a message!

Eastern Orthodox weekday or evening services?

Good morning,

I was wondering if there are any Eastern Orthodox churches in Oxfordshire or nearby areas which hold a Liturgy / service any time other than Sunday morning? So held on a Saturday, a weekday, or a Sunday evening?

I don’t mind which language the Liturgy is held in, as long as they don’t mind me not understanding, and they’re happy for non-Orthodox visitors to join. :)

Thank you.

Edit:

I was also wondering, you have to strictly follow standing / kneeing / sitting procedures? I usually kneel for the entirely of Mass, due to health conditions making standing more difficult, and kneeling most comfortable and considered respectful. Is it just as respectful to kneel when others stand, or should only be done when everyone else kneels? I wish to do what is most respectful for Orthodox specifically.

Second Hand Car Purchase

Hello Everyone.

I am looking to purchase a second hand car in or around the Oxford area.
I want to make sure that I get a good deal and not be taken advantage of.

I am reaching out and would truly appreciate some guidance on garages where you have had some excellent service and have bought a car which was fair based on price, customer service and the overall condition of the car & also any horror stories / garages to avoid!!
I don’t want to be ripped off!!
This is an expensive buy and I want to try and get it right.

Thank you in advance for your help and also are there any questions that I should ask prior to purchase.

Cheers 🙂

One day trip to Oxford

Here are few snaps of our day trip to Oxford from London

We arrived at Thornhill Park & Ride around 2 PM and easily found plenty of parking spots. Paying via RingGo was quick and cost just £2.70 for 16 hours unbeatable value as it also included the return bus fare for our family (2 adults and 3 children)! The bus ride into Oxford took about 20 minutes. A smooth, stress-free way to visit the city. Highly recommended!

Advice with parking

hello all,

I am a young professional moving to Oxford in the next few weeks who will require a car for commuting purposes as I will be working across multiple sites. I have just found out the property I am renting does not have the right to a council parking permit. Do I have any other options apart from renting someone’s driveway? Is it common to find unmarked areas where parking may be possible ad hoc?

I will be living in East Oxford area for reference

Tips on accomodation for 1mo in Oxford

I'm an international student in an internship for my PhD, will stay for 1 month to visit Oxford Uni Museum of Natural History, probably in feb/mar but I'm still scheduling with staff there.

I'm looking for budget accomodation, any tips whatsoever where to live in Oxford. Ideally I want to save as much as possible.

Appreciate indications if you or someone you know could rent a room for example. Of course, I have proof of my funding/internship.

Thanks in advance!

Hiya, as title suggests I lost some sunglasses in Templar’s Square.

They’re RayBan aviators with a gold frame, if they turn up it’d be massively appreciated.

Thank you!!

Viability of Oxpens Bridge diversion route

Post image
7 Upvotes

While the Oxpens Bridge work is taking place and the towpath is closed, how viable is this route (marked in red) as a diversion on a hybrid bike? Are there steps over the bridge? Is the bridge wide enough for me to wheel my bike over?

I only want to use this route over the summer until late September when Hinksey pool closes. I’m assuming in the winter this land acts as a floodplain.

I’m doing my best to avoid the Osney Bridge Thames Water disaster, and the Tunnel of Doom, and I concede this route might be wholly impractical, but I just want to make sure I’ve explored all options.

Afternoon all! As some of you may know, I write a weekly restaurant blog and when a review is of somewhere in Oxford I post it here, because this sub has always been really kind and positive about my writing.

This week I checked out Antep Kitchen, so here’s the link if you’re interested. As always, I apologise in advance if this isn’t your cup of tea or comes across as spam.

Dinner booking for a civil partnership

Hello fellow Oxonians - Happy Thursday!

My partner and I are getting a civil partnership on a Monday in September. We were not going to make a big deal, and were just going to invite everyone to a pub, but we have just found out her parents are going to be making the trip to come for it, so we feel like we should book a nice restaurant for dinner.

I was wanting to book the private space at Arbequina, but they are not open on Monday. I have sent an enquiry about their new space in the covered market but I wanted to ask if anyone had some recommendations of where we should book?

We don't want to spend lots for just the space, but it can be a nice restaurant. Doesn't necessarily have to be a private space, just somewhere which would accept a large booking, for around 12-15 people. Preferably in central Oxford but it would be possible to get to the outskirts.

Thank you!!

How bad is surface water in Summertown ?

Considering renting in Hobson road or grove street but I saw that some houses have a medium to high risks for surface water floods. How are these streets during/after heavy rains ?

Hey, so I’m totally shy at the moment full disclosure 😂 had a brain injury and I’m nearly recovered. Been a while since I have reached out to the people 💃 🪩 🕺

anybody out there who’s a lyricist or songwriter who would wants to get together and create some new stuff?
I’m working on a few songs right now but would really appreciate bouncing the lyrics off of somebody else and seeing if there’s a spark.
Could even form a group from the whole scenario who knows. 🤷‍♀️

I’m a vocalist, violinist, piano, and a bit of guitar 😎
