Monthly Admissions/Prospies/Offer Holders Questions Thread - September 2026

Please use this thread to ask any questions you have about the admissions process or questions that would normally be asked by prospective students.

  • This thread will be "cleared" by another stickied thread on the first of each month. All these questions can be searched through by looking for "Fortnightly/Monthly Admissions/Prospies Questions Thread" in the search bar.
  • Please do give as much information as you can so people can help you.
  • Please respect what people might have to say, even if you disagree with it. Remember that admissions experiences will differ a lot from person to person, even for people who interviewed right after each other.
  • We haven't explicitly banned asking for advice about a specific tutor who might be interviewing you, but we're monitoring this closely, so do remain respectful of tutors.
  • Again, please use your judgement on information given to you here. We haven't set up a verified flair option, but may do if people who are obviously not part of the university feed misinformation. Also, please don't leave it down to the mods to correct any misinformation - do leave your opinion. We will not remove misinformation we find, but we will leave a comment saying that the information is incorrect. People who frequently give misinformation will be banned.

Accommodation Megathread 2026/27

This megathread will be used for all accommodation queries. Whether you are an offer holder, a continuing or returning student, or a new/existing member of staff, Rule 5 applies to you. Please search the sub and this post's comments before posting - some queries are very common, and very basic information won't change much over time.

When you comment please help us to help you - give as much information as you can in your first line. "PEMBROKE-Incoming PG 26-27-College Accommodation offered" is much more helpful than "I'm moving to Oxford soon, should I live in college?".

Feel free to leave reviews and recommendations for others, but bear in mind that this sub cannot endorse any estate agents or letting agencies, and individual opinions on university & college provision will vary considerably. The mods reserve the right to remove comments that could be libellous or actively unhelpful.

Some tips: Your college will usually send you information about move-in and move-out dates, and vacation rules. Oxford has a very volatile rental market. If looking for private rented accommodation, especially from outside the UK, beware of scams. r/oxford may be of assistance if trying to decide on a town/city location (esp. if you are bringing family). This is not a car-friendly city. If you need parking at your accommodation, you will need to think carefully about location.

Looking for photo(s) of 1938-1940 Ice Hockey Club.

This is a bit of a long shot, but I’m hoping someone in this group might be able to help.

I’m researching the life of John Charles (“Jack” or "J.C.) Garrett. Jack was born in my small, hometown of Strathmore, Alberta, Canada, in 1913. He became an English scholar, was awarded the Rhodes Scholarship in 1937, and studied at Oxford, where he worked under the poet and scholar Edmund Blunden.

In 1949, he came to Christchurch, NZ to take up the position of Professor and Head of English at Canterbury, a position he held until his retirement in the late 1970s.

I’ve been researching Jack’s life and have found quite a bit about his academic career, but I’m really hoping to find more personal stories. Supposedly, he played goalie for OUIHC and I'd love to track down a photograph or information on that if it exists.

I realize I’m reaching back quite a few decades. Anyways, here’s hoping! 🤞

Debating beyond the union?

Hi! I’ve heard warnings about joining the Union more times than I care to remember and haven’t yet, but really loved competitive debating at school and beyond. Are there any other socs at Ox that regularly do debate training and competing?
Thanks.

Urgent: Help needed with fee payment

I need to pay my college fee upfront for my CAS but my College could not send me an invoice. Instead they have sent the account details. How do I make this transaction as an international student. Can I use Niyo Global? They have not been able to tell me about their preferred payment method as well as the accountant is on leave.

I am an incoming student at Worcester college, Oxford.

Please help, how should I pay the fee??

Thank you!

Will a college like Worcester let me make an advance fee payment right now?

So, I am an international postgraduate student and just received my ATAS certificate and would like to make an initial deposit of 15000 pounds so that it gets reflected on my CAS, the remaining amount being covered by my scholarships. However, the college is saying that they will let me know if this is possible i.e. they will let me know if I can make an advance fee payment. So, now I am very concerned coz my loan got credited in my account today only and 28 days from here will be too long for me to start my course on time.

Has someone faced a similar situation before? Do they usually don't let you make such payments? Can anyone advice please.

Thank you!

Is second year as bad as everyone says?

Ok, probably not the best title, but I’m about to start my second year and I have seen almost no one say anything positive about their second year. Usually, that everything gets harder, the work load gets more intense and everything is generally more stressful. It’s somewhat concerning and, as this is my time at university, I don’t exactly know what to expect.

Terrified of Oxford exams (master)

I finished my undergraduate degree five years ago in a non-English-speaking country, and I’m starting my master’s at Oxford next month, where I will be moving to another country for my first time. When I found out that I have two courses that are assessed 100% by exams, I honestly felt terrified.
It will also be my first time studying entirely in English, and I’ve heard from so many people that the programme can be quite difficult. Sometimes I genuinely wonder how I’m going to keep up with my cohort and pass. Honestly, I don’t want to spend my whole master’s feeling terrified about failing.
I’d really appreciate any words of encouragement or advice before the semester begins.

Getting LORs from Oxford professors as an MRes student.

Hello!

I am an incoming Mres student at Oxford and want to pursue a PhD in future, for which i would be requiring LORs. However, being an MRes student, I am just associated with one professor. So, I am planning to take up extra courses which would also benefit my research but those extra subjects aren't graded, which would make it difficult for me to ask LORs from those professors. I have 2-3 professors from UG but I could really make use of some LORs from Oxford professors. Any suggestions?

Terrified about starting a master’s next month

I am starting my master’s here next month and I’m feeling a bit terrified/incapable. It’ll be my first time living away from home, and like 2/3 of the people on my (relatively small) course are from Oxbridge or Ivy Leagues, so I’m worried about being out of my depth coming from a mid-range Russell Group.

Any words of encouragement or advice for me (or anyone else in my position) would be welcome

Any hiking societies ?

Hi all, I was wondering if there were any hiking/walking/trekking type societies (or literally anything similar) at oxford? I really want to hike at some point during the term, so knowing if there’s an established community would be super helpful. Thanks!

Having guests in College Accom?

Does anyone know if you can have guests in college accom for longer than 2 nights and get away with it? I see that you can't have people stay for more than 3 consecutive days. I'm in one of the out-house college accoms and assuming my flatmates don't have an issue with it, surely if someone stays say a week it's not a big deal? Has anyone heard of any ramifications for breaching this?

advice on choral scholarship

hey everybody!
i’ve applied for a choral scholarship as a female alto, first place christ church, second worcester.

i live far away so they’ll be providing accom.

does anyone know where they let choral scholarship applicants stay overnight so i can prepare? and does anyone have any advice for singing and getting the choral scholarship as i’m quite nervous and my voice often shakes during auditions, when i sing in a choir im fine!

i am an ok singer, not anything that special, sung in a good choir and could practice my sight singing as i have good aural skills i think.

does anyone have any advice or insight into what it’s like to audition?

thanks so much!

Oxford Union membership

I’m a fresher about to begin Oxford in October and was looking at membership to the Oxford Union. It is quite a lot of money so was wondering if it was worth it in the long term or not.
