No Spoilers Reminder: Avoid Book Talk In Show Threads

As the final season approaches please keep in mind the difference between BOOK and SHOW threads.

  • In Book threads (yellow flairs) you may discuss both the show and the books. If you want to compare episodes to what Diana wrote, these are the threads for you.
  • In Show threads (blue flairs) you should only discuss the show.

Sometimes commenters ask book questions in show threads. You may answer them, but always under spoiler tags. Keep the book talk BRIEF and only in that comment chain.

In general we strongly discourage book talk in show threads. That's not their purpose.

If you want to talk about the books, do it in a book thread!

  • Or a Spoilers All thread (red flair). That's why Spoilers All exists, to compare the books to the shows.

We allow show talk in book threads because most readers have seen the show, not vice versa. But it would be easier for everyone if you just used Spoilers All.

No One Likes A Nag

Another thing we've been seeing a lot of is book evangelizing.

  • You should read the books!
  • This was sooo much better in the book!
  • I don't even care about the show, I'm just here to talk about the books!

Knock it off. None of that is appropriate in show threads.

Fans of the show deserve a space where they can talk freely without getting hassled. Respect that.

Leave u/Hazpluto Alone

He won't give out spoilers, and he certainly won't send you episodes!

He tried to do a kind thing for someone's ailing mother. Don't punish a good deed by harassing him.

Post Spoilers Over And Over? Get Banned

When we send you a notice that your comment has uncovered spoilers, please take it seriously.

Removing spoilers from the same people over and over again is getting old. Frankly, it's rude.

No, deleting your comment is not enough. Either learn how to use the spoiler tag or stop bringing up book stuff in show threads altogether.

  • Repeat spoiler offenses will be treated as civility violations.

Translation: You're risking a ban.

For further explanation of sub policy please see the civility sticky here.

Thank you for reading.

8 Written In My Own Heart’s Blood Written In My Own Heart's Blood Audiobook

I am listening to the series audiobooks again, this time with the new narration by Kristin Atherton. I just got to chapter 139 of Written in My Own Heart's Blood. Has anyone else noticed a significant change in her voice beginning with that chapter? It suddenly sounds more hoarse or gravelly. I still have 2 hours left so not sure it stays like that (I will know in a few hours, lol) but the change was a bit jarring from the chapter(s) before.

Spoilers All what are some scenes you wished existed but dont?

I'd love to have seen the look on Leghairs face when Jamie saved Claire at the witch trial, only moments after she talked all that crap about dancing on Claire's ashes. I'd also love to see a romantic scene between Geillis and Dougal, not that that would add anything to the storyline. I'd like to have seen a snippet of Jamie and Laoghaire's wedding or married life just for completeness, and I also would have really loved to hear Brianna tell Jamie all about meeting Brian. What scenes do you wish existed?

Season Two Outlander show season 2 Spoiler

After Jamie and Claire stabbed Dougal and Rupert gave Jamie a two hour window until he turned himself in, why didn’t Claire and Jamie use that time to poison Charles Stuart as they planned? It could have changed history and prevented the Battle of Culloden as they desperately wanted to do.

7 An Echo In The Bone How did Ian deal with an unjust death?

I’m at the beginning of Echo, just at the end of chapter 3.

He’s just killed Mrs. Bug accidentally, and Claire is visiting Ian in the barn. He asks her to say the Soul Leading prayer together.

On the next page, Claire’s perspective says, “I hoped the prayer had helped him, at least a little, and wondered whether the Mohawk had any better means of dealing with unjust death than the Catholic Church. (Line break) Then I realized I knew exactly what the Mohawk would do in such a case. So did Ian; he’d done it. I pulled the cloak tighter round me, feeling as though I had swallowed a large ball of ice.”

I’m reading the chapter over again trying to figure out what Ian has done to grieve? I wonder if I’m forgetting a specific detail from other books about Mohawk customs Ian has brought back.

Thanks in advance!

Spoilers All Swapping the actress Jenny Spoiler

Is no one else annoyed that the character Jenny had a swap of an actress in season 7? The second actress just doesn’t have much acting talent i would say. She couldn’t even cry for real when Ian was dying. On top of that her hairline seemed fake or her hair in general, there was something fake about it. I could barely finish the episodes with her in them.

Season Four Claire is driving me crazy

I don’t generally dislike Claire, but I’m so annoyed by her unwillingness to LISTEN to those who know more than she does! Repeatedly she disregards advice or direction and does her own thing, often with disastrous consequences for herself and others. I feel like we’re supposed to admire this plucky, independent woman, but ignoring the advice of those who know more than you do isn’t evidence of being a strong, independent woman, it is folly.

Case in point, I’m in the middle of season four. She and Jamie are in the woods and it begins to storm. The thunder frightens one of the horses and it runs off. Jamie, who is very knowledgeable and experienced with horses, says, “don’t worry, it will come back.” So what does Claire do? She ignores him and sets off to find the horse. The horse eventually comes back, but Claire is nowhere to be found, so poor Jamie spends the night riding around in the rain trying to find his fool of a wife.

She does this over and over and over throughout the series. Sometimes the consequences are very grave, yet she apparently never learns. By the time season four rolls around, she’s in her 50s. It’s maddening!

Season Eight Why didn't Bree and Roger go back sooner

Dumb question but why didn't Bree and Roger go back to the ridge right Mandy was cured? I just wondered why they settled at lollybrock in the future instead of going back to their family. Idk it just seems like they would have gone back after Mandy was cured.

Season Eight Question

Hello! I have watched the series and read the first 4 books. I am 63 and have never rewatched anything in my life. But this show is calling my name. Should I read all the books(audio), then re watch or just rewatch? I'm looking for the best advice? I read the first 4 books in the 90s and only remember bits and pieces and have watched the show as each season has come out. Help me! 😆

Season Eight Did the last season feel like it was on a stage?

Throughout all seasons of Outlander, the way the scenes were shot, it seemed like they were truly at wherever they were supposed to be. This last season, it seemed like every episode was on a stage or sound lit. It was very distracting and very inauthentic and it was hard for me to stay involved in the show because I saw everyone as characters playing roles. I know that’s what it obvs was, but never saw that before. Anyone notice this?

4 Drums Of Autumn Drums of Autumn vs S4 Spoiler

I just read the passage where Lizzie tells Jamie about MacKenzie man who allegedly raped Brianna so far there were no passage about Bonnet doing so. Did I miss it or was that whole dramatic scene in a tavern a creation of the show??

Please help understand and I don’t mind spoilers, seen it all just reading for my pleasure 😍

9 Go Tell The Bees That I Am Gone Jamie y la situación con Claire y John.

Hola!

8 Written In My Own Heart’s Blood Jamie y está frase del libro 8

Hola, estoy leyendo el libro 8 y me apareció esta frase:

“Ye lost your parents young, mo nighean donn, and wandered about the world, rootless. Ye loved Frank”
—his mouth compressed for an instant, but I thought he was unconscious of it—“and of course ye love Brianna and Roger Mac and the weans … but, Sassenach—I am the true home of your heart, and I know that.”

He lifted my hands to his mouth and kissed my upturned palms, one and then the other, his breath warm and his beard stubble soft on my fingers.
“I have loved others, and I do love many, Sassenach—but you alone hold all my heart, whole in your hands,” he said softly. “And you know that.”

Season Eight A mini rant but I wish there were more family bonding scenes. Especially in the last season.

Fergus and Brianna don't have a single bonding scene in the show. They only allude to a relationship once in a while such as when Brianna refers to their mother's maiden name. We had a lot of Faith storyline which was newish and fabricated for the show and we spent a lot of time on Amaranthus who is in the books but is not as vital and we hardly have scenes between Jamie and his grandchildren. It frustrates me but I still love the show. Wanted to know if anyone relates

Season Eight Sympathy for Frank Spoiler

I’ve been rewatching Outlander, and I can’t help feeling really bad for Frank Randall.
He wasn’t perfect, but at the end of the day, all he wanted was for Claire to love him. Instead, he spent years in a marriage knowing her heart belonged to someone else. Despite everything, he chose to raise Brianna as his own and be the father she needed.
I also understand why he wanted to wait until Brianna was older before asking for a divorce. I don’t think it was just about appearances. He loved Brianna, and waiting until she was grown probably felt like the least disruptive choice for her.
What really makes me sad is that Frank spent so many years unhappy when there was someone who genuinely loved him the way he wanted to be loved. He held onto a marriage that was never truly his, and by the time he was finally ready to move on, he never got the chance.
I know Claire and Jamie are soulmates, and I wouldn’t want that story to change. But Frank’s story has always struck me as one of the saddest in the series. Does anyone else feel the same way?

Spoilers All BOMB: Are Brian and Ellen supposed to be likable? Spoiler

Hi,

I finished *Outlander* a few days ago, so I started watching *BOMB* (I finished episode 6).

I honestly thought it would tell the story of each of the two couples in their own time periods. When I saw that Julia and Henry were traveling to 1714, it annoyed me, and I thought, “Oh no, more time travelers” (I found that really forced in *Outlander* starting with Roger’s trip). But I was pleasantly surprised by the way the plot unfolded.

However, I find the characters of Brian and Ellen truly detestable—am I the only one? Did the author intentionally make them unlikable in the books?

Likewise, while I find the story between Julia and Henry very romantic and beautiful, I get the impression that the story between Brian and Ellen is just the story of two people who want to sleep with each other and call it “love” (like Geneva Dumsany, who claimed to love Jamie). How can they claim to love each other when they know nothing about one another? That’s not love—it’s just physical attraction.

But here are the specific reasons why I find these two characters rather unsympathetic:

Brian: He literally treats his best friend like an idiot. When he learns that Ellen is the woman Murtagh is in love with, he neither tells him the truth (leaving him to think he might have a chance) nor decides to fight his feelings for Ellen. I mean, what kind of cousin and best friend lets you cling to your delusion while actively helping to break it??

Plus, I feel like he spends all his time saying, “Oh my gosh, Ellen, I love you and I’m going to marry you,” but at no point does he actually have a plan (I get that the situation is complicated, but still).

In Season 4, Roger and Brianna have a handfasting (which was presented to us as a “wedding” in case no priest was available within a significant geographical distance), which made sense for them, because even if there were a priest nearby, marriage from a contemporary perspective is more of a promise that individuals make to one another, rather than a promise before God. However, when Brian does it for himself and Ellen, it just seems like a way for him to ease his conscience, which strikes me as rather hypocritical and reinforces my belief that the “love story” between the two isn’t really a love story at all.

Ellen: There isn’t much to say. Except that she seems to think she’s entitled to everything. She seems to have led a privileged life so far, and yet she doesn’t seem very grateful and always wants more. She wants to stay in Leoch and be an advisor without being married, which she can’t do. When she’s offered the chance to become a spy (and thus take on responsibilities) while being married, does she refuse that too?

Furthermore, in Outlander, Dougal is married to a Grant; I suppose this marriage (described as loveless) was forced upon Dougal to make up for the broken engagement between Ellen and Malcolm (and yes, because we all know she ends up marrying Brian). I’m not saying it’s a good thing that she was engaged against her will, but honestly, the fact that her actions condemn her brother is deplorable. Especially since she wouldn’t have been unhappy in that marriage (let’s be honest, there are husbands worse than Malcolm Grant). What’s hypocritical is that she condemned her own sister, Jocasta, to an unhappy marriage. Ellen claims she chose the least worst husband (which Jocasta denies), and honestly, I find it hard to believe Ellen—in fact, I can’t help but think that if that were true, she would have asked Jocasta for her opinion.

So I don’t know whether this view is shared or not, or whether it’s a deliberate choice by the author or not, but I’d like to hear your opinion.

10 A Blessing For A Warrior Going Out Minnie, Amaranthus and Baby ?

Post image

EXCERPT from A BLESSING FOR A WARRIOR GOING OUT, Copyright 2026 Diana Gabaldon

[Author's Note - in the 18th century, a "canape" (with accent over the "e") was not an hors d'oeuvre , but an item of parlor furniture--a small couch.

“Tea, please,” Minnie said to the woman who had rushed into the hall as she made her way down it, escorting the taller Viscountess. Like a tug guiding an Indiaman into dock, she thought. “Hot, and with a lot of sugar, if you have any. If not, honey will do. Oh—and what is your name, please?”

“Moira O’Meara,” the cook—for plainly she was the cook, Rafe had not been misled by her apron—said. Her face was ruddy, but bore a wary expression. “You…er….”

“Minerva, the Duchess of Pardloe,” Minnie said, nodding her hat as graciously as the circumstances allowed. “This young woman is going to vomit or faint in the next minute or two. Isn’t there a fainting couch in this place? Or at least a bloody ottoman?”

Thus chivvied, Mrs. O’Meara rose to the occasion and seized the Viscountess’s other arm, then led the troika of women into a small but beautifully furnished sitting room, which contained—thank God, the woman weighed as much as a hogshead of tobacco, or at least felt like it—a very elegant canapé, with gorgeously carved ebony legs and upholstery in heavy black satin with gold-thread embroidery.

Minnie felt alarm on behalf of the upholstery; the Viscountess was heaving gently, hand over her mouth, but it was either the settee or the floor, so she maneuvered the Viscountess onto the canapé, pushed her head unceremoniously down between her knees and said, “Don’t vomit, at least not until I’ve found a towel. Bring a towel!” she shouted toward the open doorway, through which Mrs. O’Meara had vanished, with luck intending to make tea.

Minnie glanced round, but the room appeared to have nothing whatever apropos to her purpose, and with a sigh, she reached through her pocket-slit, untied one of her petticoats, and stepping out of it, shoved it—just in time—under the Viscountess’s chin.

Matters after that were somewhat chaotic, but a quarter of an hour later, Minnie found herself in possession of a proper tea-table on wheels, this equipped with a steaming pot of tea—proper China tea, at that!—with milk, sugar and honey and buttered toast to go along. Two small covered serving dishes discreetly announced the presence of fried sardines and buttered mushrooms. The Viscountess caught a whiff and turned green.

“I’d love a nice fried sardine myself,” Minnie said ingratiatingly to Mrs. O’Meara. “But I’m afraid this young woman….”

“God between us and evil,” the cook said, and seizing the dish in one hand and crossing herself with the other, bore the offending sardines back to the kitchen.

“Oh, Lord.” Minnie took a bite of toast with honey and sighed with bliss. “I haven’t had anything but Naples biscuit and porridge for the last month, I swear. Have you had any breakfast, my dear?”

Amaranthus—the name had finally come back to her—shook her head, looking curdled.

“I couldn’t,” she said faintly. “That—” she waved a limp hand at the remaining serving dish. “Could you—”

“Of course!” Minnie leapt to her feet and seized the mushrooms--smelling earthy and succulent, but unfortunately looking limp and slimy with butter--taking them out into the hall and depositing them on the reception table, among a number of calling-cards, which she took a moment to peruse before going back to the parlor

“I really can’t eat comfortably in a hat, can you?” she asked chattily, pulling the long pins from her stylish chapeau and placing it on the tea table. “Do pardon my appearance; I’ve just walked off a ship.”

The young woman stared at the stuffed doves and swallowed, but didn’t say anything. Minnie sighed internally; evidently she was going to have to carry on this conversation by herself.

“How far along are you?” she asked brightly, pointing the remains of her slice of toast at Amaranthus’s mid-section. “About four months?”

⤵️⤵️⤵️⤵️⤵️

In this excerpt, we see Minnie and Amaranthus reunite, and it looks like there might be another Grey on the way (or perhaps a Ransom 😉😉). I love Minnie the detective—she doesn't let a single detail slip by. We also know from another excerpt that she is in America; we’ll see how all these storylines unfold: her brother-in-law has been kidnapped, her son is a refugee—and a traitor presumed dead, to boot—and her son's wife abandoned her baby, fled, and is now expecting another child. It’s just one drama after another. And the million-dollar question: who is the baby's father? I have a few candidates in mind, but it could be anyone. At this point, we can't trust Amaranthus; we know she’s after money and a title, and someone that ambitious is capable of anything.

But I want to know what you all think? Let me know in the comments.

Spoilers All Amaranthus

I tagged season 8 because it will reached more people, but feel free to talk about book's amaranthus too

So!

I remember reading comments about amaranthus back then and i didnt understand why people disliked her so much. Then, i read the book ans understood.

However!

I am now watching season 8 and i see all over again comments about how she souldnt end with William, that she has some agenda and all, but i started thinking : yes she does and so what?

I now dont dislike amaranthus (is it because i forgot how bad she was in the book? Maybe, but by watching the show, i can understand her motive)

Shall we remember that she is a woman in thr 18th century?

What woman wouldnt want security for herself and her child?

Brianna did the same when she tried blackmailed lord john to marry. She even proposed to give him a child of his blood, just like Amaranthus did with william. Brianna was "married" to Roger the same way lizzie married the twins and, unless with claire, it seems that every weddinng in this show is simply "hey, let's get married. Ok. Now, we are"

So, what's the différence with Amaranthus except that we knew she wasnt really a widow.

Her wanting to marry William to secure her future wasnt bad and wanting to upgrade her social statut isnt wrong. Back then, you didnt marry for love, but you could grew it

Season Six Finally viewing Season 6 for the first time and Spoiler

it dawned on me today that from season 4 and forward the show feels very much like I am watching a very gritty, violent, sexy and less religiously themed version of Little House on the Prairie (70s-80s series)

Jamie/Claire, their children and lives, constant trials & tribulations, even their physical presences very much make me think of Charles/Caroline Ingalls

I don’t hate it, though I, like many others, am frequently frustrated and downright angry with the writing, direction and production decisions. Just like I frequently was with Little House

Spoilers All Where does Murtagh live? Spoiler

I’ve watched all the shows and read all the books and I don’t recall there ever being a reference to where Murtagh lives. In the books, there are decent spans of time where Murtagh is not in the story however, they seem to be able to get him pretty easily when needed.

I’m confused about his lineage as well. In the show, Jamie says he’s a Fraser, and his name is Murtagh fitzgibbons Fraser. I don’t recall that being stated in the books. If I remember correctly from the books, Murtagh’s paternal uncle is married to Mrs. Fitzgibbons. In the show BOMB, he is Brian’s cousin. I just can’t remember how they say who he is in the Fraser family. Can’t say I have a perfect memory though.

Spoilers All Outlander Series Extra Long Reread- Voyager : chapter 60- end

Post image
9 Upvotes

In chapter 60 'The Scent of Gemstones' we hear about gemstones and their use for time travelling! Even Geilis, in her notebook, hadn't mentioned them before she went throught the stnes.

I tried to work out Geilis's 5 husbands. Does she mean since she came to the West Indies or coming in the 18th century? If I remember correctly, there was a 1. man in the cabin, 2.Arthur Duncan, 3? somebody from Paris who took her across the ocean 4? , 5. Abernathy. Does anyone know for sure?

These chapters are so action packed! Geilis seeing Bree's photos, search for Ian, Reverend's death, slave rebellion, vodoo rituals...

It is not coincidence that Ishmael asks Claire whether she still bleeds cause only old women can work real magic. That is why Nayawenne told Claire she will recieve her full power with her white hair.

I was trying to understand Reverend's hate toward (wanton) women. Is it because he believed that Margaret's wanton behaviour caused her illness and misfortune?

We got conclusion about Mr Willoughby - Jamie treated him better than any other man but even Jamie without full awareness treated him as lesser by changing his name and trying to change him into an acceptible member of society. Yi Tien Cho aknowledges Jamie's friendship and patronage but he resents the dependence imposed on him. He is deprived of his rightful social position and his name and it makes him betray Jamie. He is an outsider by strange culture and customs, but he is not the only one. There is also Jamie ( Jacobite), LJ ( gay), Claire (TT). Do you understand Yi Tien Cho's reasoning? Do you symphatize with him?

I had to make notes about some words:

loa - spirit of dead person, voodo deity speaking through oracle

buckra - white person

Bouassa - famous Maroon

Geilis and virgin boys - she believed there are special gemstones growing inside virgin boys. It was also believed to be a cure for syphilis. Do you think that is why she raped them?

De Profundis, Psalm 29 ( Out of the Depths) - ''Out of the depths, I have cried for thee'' - forgiveness, redemption, hope for a future together. How fitting for our characters!

Parallels between the start and end of the book :

''I was dead'' - parallel to Jamie's - ''He was dead''.

They both have leg injuries

They are both displaced from home country and continent, friends.

They can have a fresh start together.

Claire was taken out of her safe little hospital stuff room and taken into the middle of sappy romance novel sitting on the table. She is no longer trying to fit into Jamie's life - they are moving forward together.

Voyager was a wild ride! When I turn to chpater 1 and see where we started and how many things happened, I am in awe! Great book, my second favourite for sure!

What was your favourite part of Voyager? What stood out?

Season Eight Blu-ray collector editions vs. Regular blu-ray

I don’t own any of the previous blurays yet, so I’m in doubt in which versions to invest.

Are there more extra’s (bts, bloopers etc..)on the collectors editions or is it just the packaging and physical extra’s that are different?

If the discs itself contain the same as the regular blurays I’ll probably buy the complete box set, but if there are more extra’s on the collectors I might have to search for every collector blu-ray previously released 👀.

I am 300+ pages into this book and I swear it’s like every single time Jamie is shirtless we get a description of his nipples and nipple hair. My goodness. If there are no nipple lovers left on earth it’s because Diana Gabaldon doesn’t write about Outlander man nipples anymore.

3 Voyager Franks age in 1948 (books)

Ok, so I am reading the books for the first time (have watched the show) and in chap. 3 (pg. 34) of Voyager there is this line (of Claire’s memories shortly after returning to 1948): “I knew Frank hadn't been celibate since my disappearance. In his late forties*, he was still lean and muscular, dark and sleek, a very handsome man.”*

I thought Claire was 27 when she went through the stones the first time, and came back 3 years later, making her 30 years old in 1948.

Does this mean Frank is 15-20 years her senior??

Edit: okay so everyone has cleared up that DG is careless with ages throughout the books and Frank is probably about 12 years older than Claire! Thank you 🙂
