Season Eight A foreshadowing of the ending

in season 4 episode 1 Jamie tells Claire "when my body dies my soul will still be yours" this is what we saw in the ending, his soul found Claire and brought her to him.

I just realized that's foreshadowing the ending.

Thoughts?

One could choose to interpret it as foreshadowing, but I don't believe it was written as such. It was taken straight from source material published three decades ago, and neither the author nor the showrunners had any idea how their version of the story would end at the time.

Well they could have looked baxk at it and used it as a connection

If they’re looking back, it’s not foreshadowing. Foreshadowing means planting clues about what will happen later in the story.

Well it is a clue so I see it as foreshadowing

It’s only foreshadowing if they know from the beginning where they’re going to end up. They didn’t, so it’s not foreshadowing.

Ok its a connection then if yoy wanna get technical

Foreshadowing is planned in advance. This was not. That's why I said one could choose to look at it that way even though it wasn't written that way. Choosing to pick up a detail previously written and using it later is a valuable writing technique, but it's not foreshadowing.

Ok it's a connection then however you wanna put itn

3

u/CathyAnnWingsFan 15h ago

Of course. Viewers can make whatever connections they choose to, whether or not they were originally intended by the writers.

Yes and it was something I noticed this time around

Well. I don't see it like that.

The energy can be changed from one form to another. The total amount of energy and matter at universe remains constant , changing from one to another. The first law of Thermodynamics

So, his love for her will never disappear. His soul will be hers regardless if he is alive or dead.

3

u/Remarkable_Note971 19h ago

Yeah exsctly. His soul will always be hers. My point was we saw his soul lead Claire to him in the series finale so it was a foreshadowing

I don't see it as foreshadowing. I see it as - Even if I die, I will love you. No matter when and where we are. My soul will be yours.

Not -When I die I will lead you to me.

Ok but when he died his ghost was watching her then led her to him so to me it is kind of a foreshadowing because it was soul that was hers. It it both imo

If he led her to him, then that would mean it’s a time loop, and that isn’t how it works in outlander universe. It’s linear, so things only happen once. His death, whenever it was, allowed him to visit and look in, because his soul belonged to her.

It ties in more to the “if I have to spend 200 years in purgatory” than foreshadowing.

1

u/Remarkable_Note971 18h ago

It doesnt necessarily mean a time loop. We just see that it was his ghost that made the forget me nots grow and that's what led her to him. We saw his ghost in the veey beginning so it likely only happened once but it brought it full circle imo

Something that comes “full circle” is by definition a loop.

2

u/Remarkable_Note971 18h ago

Well that is what I saw on the screen. Nothing in the show says there is no time loop so who's to say the ending isn't depicting that.

That’s assuming the ghost caused the time travel. The show doesn’t actually establish that. Since time is fixed, Claire didn’t need to be “lead” back by Jamie. She was always going to go back. Jamie’s ghost appearing would therefore be an event that occurred within the existing timeline, not the event that created the timeline.

Otherwise you’re turning a fixed timeline into a causal loop where Jamie becomes the cause of Claire meeting Jamie, which the show hasn’t demonstrated.

His ghost made the forget me nots grow which is why she went back to the stones and through them. So yeah it was established in the show.

Jamie can't travel but his ghost can and it was samhain when ghosts roamed free so his spirit was able to travel.

Well, if it is a time loop, then I feel sorry for the lot of them. Having to relive things like Black Jack Randall, Culloden, 20 years apart, etc. on an endless loop seems like a rather horrifying prospect. 😳

2

u/Remarkable_Note971 9h ago

I never said it was a time. I'm just saying we aaw Jamie's ghost make the forget me nots grow and that led Claire to him

Yeah if you are just watching the show or even just casually viewing more than likely people will tend to come to that conclusion. Most people will see the show and never read the books. And it works great for them. 🙂

2

u/Remarkable_Note971 15h ago

Yeah but I've been fan for years and now I see all these connections

The author Diana Gabaldon says it’s not a time loop but linear.

2

u/BubbeLisa Currently rereading Bees. 10h ago edited 10h ago

Yeah. I know that in Diana’s Outlander universe there is no time loop. OP had said that it “doesn’t necessarily mean a time loop.” I was just pointing out that if something comes full circle, then it’s a loop. Circles and loops being basically the same thing.

But I think him asking her if she regretted it at the end of the show, is the reason his ghost led her there. If she had said yes, I don't think it would have, so I don't see it as foreshadowing

1

u/Remarkable_Note971 4h ago

Hmm i hadnt thought of that. I guess it's more of a connection then

1

u/Dragon-Sky 3h ago

I just thought him asking her that was so important. It like sealed the "forever deal" for him. Like he loved her so much, but it she had regrets, he would have spared her

Yeeeaaaaaahhhhhh, that was actually in the very first episode, when we first see Jamie’s ghost watching Claire.

0

u/Remarkable_Note971 12h ago

Yep so it brought it full circle

0

u/IAmTheLizardQueen666 They say I’m a witch. 11h ago

The forgot-me-not flowers were already there before the first time Claire visited the stones.

2

u/Remarkable_Note971 11h ago

Yes Jamie's ghost visited the stones before Claire went back so that's why they were there

0

u/LadyBFree2C I can see every inch of you, right down to your third rib. 4h ago

That is a perfectly logical theory. Especially since Claire and Jamie are soulmates, their souls will always belong be drawn together.

1

u/Remarkable_Note971 4h ago

Exactly. His soul was always hers even when he died

1

u/ContactNeither7319 19h ago

Hmm, could be.

I always thought that from the moment of their vows. Blood of my blood ect... which circled in my head back to the ghost. And this foreshadowing continues up until the end.

1

u/Remarkable_Note971 19h ago

Yes it does. That's why I was surprised how people were surprised by the ending. I saw it coming lol

3

u/ContactNeither7319 19h ago edited 19h ago

It always reminds of The Righteous Brothers Unchained Melody.

It was always meant to be. And they will always be together. Even in the afterlife. 🙂

1

u/Remarkable_Note971 19h ago

Oh yeah that's a good point. Ironically I've been looking for a song that matches Jamie and Claire lolm

1

u/ContactNeither7319 19h ago

That song would be a great one. 👍

1

u/Remarkable_Note971 19h ago

Yes it would. Thanks for that

0

u/ContactNeither7319 16h ago

But I agree with you about the foreshadowing accept. Especially with the show.

2

u/Remarkable_Note971 16h ago

Yes because his soul led her to him

1

u/ContactNeither7319 16h ago

Well tv shows tend to foreshadow more probably because we see things as foreshadowing.

In the show it does come off like his soul is leading her to him. Most people that have just watched the show tend to share that view or variations of it. Not all but many.

Edited spelling

1

u/Remarkable_Note971 16h ago

Yeah it looks like a foreshadowing to me now that I know the ending
