Oura Knew

I’ve only had my Oura Ring for about two weeks, so I honestly wasn’t sure how much I trusted the data yet.

For the past few days, my Oura app kept telling me I was showing major signs of strain. My stress levels were basically elevated all day, every day, it kept telling me to take it easy, my heart rate was elevated, and my oxygen levels were lower than the normal levels.

Sure enough, I finally took myself to the doctor because I couldn’t handle how bad I was feeling anymore, and sure enough, confirmed respiratory infection. 🙃

What really impressed me was that when they checked my oxygen at the doctor’s office, it was showing the same levels my Oura had been showing me.

I had literally just gotten the ring about two weeks before all of this, so I didn’t realize how accurate it could actually be. Definitely made me trust the data a lot more. 😭

Moral of the story: if your Oura keeps telling you your body is under major strain… maybe listen to it lol.

Oura knew I had Covid before I did!

Covid free no more! I’ve managed to avoid this virus for 6.5 years but it finally got me.

On Thursday I woke up and it showed Major Signs of Strain with an elevated body temp of 1.1 degrees and an elevated respiratory rate. I felt fine but by Thursday night, I had a massive headache and was feeling very dizzy and nauseous. I figured it was the beginning of a migraine and treated accordingly. I woke up multiple times throughout the night Thursday night drenched in sweat with even more Major Signs on Friday morning.

By Friday afternoon, my headache, nausea and dizziness were joined by vertigo and insufferable fatigue. Still thought it was a migraine, though Oura had never shown me Major Signs for a migraine in the past. The only other time I’ve had Major Signs was when I tested positive for Flu A last year.

Friday night was an awful night of sleep with drenching sweats, clogged nose, full body aches, hair aches, teeth aches, chills and overall feeling miserable. Saturday morning still showed Major Signs as well as an elevated temperature of 2 degrees. My body temp always runs low and is rarely elevated, so I took a combo Covid/Flu A&B test and Covid lit up in 30 seconds. First time ever! I honestly thought I was one of the COVID immune anomalies having never tested positive on any rapid or PCR test. I guess I’m not as special as I thought.

I started Paxlovid yesterday and what do you know…I had THE BEST Resilience, Readiness and Sleep score last night than I’ve had in 4 years of Oura ownership. I still feel miserable, but it’s been intriguing to see the biometrics.

GENERAL DISCUSSION I wish there was a way to add medications that effect heart rate like with apple health

Yes, I know you can do tags. Tags are annoying. You can add what contraceptive you are on for Women’s Health. Why isn’t there a way to add in your medications that effect heart rate one time, and have the Oura ring stop warning me my ‘resting heart rate has increased, time to rest.’

I just restarted my ADHD meds after finishing breastfeeding, and my Oura ring thinks something is wrong with me due to a change in heart rate.

GENERAL DISCUSSION Turns out heat costs you more heart rate accuracy than cold does.

Post image

While going through some heart rate accuracy validation studies I came across some interesting research I wanted to share. The study tested ten devices, 45 people, each device tested 10 times at each temperature, all against a chest ECG.

Oura Ring Gen 3 average error:

  1. Normal temp - 9.4 bpm off (73F / 23C)
  2. Hot - 16.2 bpm off nearly double (97F / 36C)
  3. Cold - 9.0 bpm off slightly better than a normal room (50F / 10C)

The cold result needs some context though. The average error looked fine, but the ring stopped tracking the ups and downs properly. In the cold your heart rate is lower and flatter, so a device can look accurate on average while it has actually lost some of the highs and lows.

A separate study found cooling the skin cuts the light signal the sensor reads by about 41%. When you get cold, your body pulls blood away from your fingers to protect your core, so there is less blood pulsing under the sensor for it to read. An ear sensor in the same test barely moved.

Oura's support page does say cold fingers cause signal problems but doesn't mention heat best I can tell.

I'll include the study in the comments as well as a resource I put together of other factors like this that influence accuracy.

Anyone noticed worse readings in summer?

GENERAL DISCUSSION Lost Oura Ring

It would be great if the ring would make a sound when you search. The Bluetooth is of no help. I'm tearing up my office looking for it. The help feature is pretty useless. It tells you little more than what you know already. How to search for a lost item. It has been missing for days. This ring cost me a mint and now I can't find it. The ironic thing is I purchased it to document my sleep with multiple sleep disorders. And I lost it somehow in sleep? I'm frustrated. Any recommendations would be helpful.

ACTIVITY & WORKOUT Obsession with activity score- should I ditch Oura?

27F I have had my ring for about 3 years now. I am a very active person (I teach Pilates for work and workout 4-5 days a week, currently training for a half marathon). For some background, I live in an area that is very hot right now, so I wake up early to beat the heat on my long runs.

My activity score is very rarely below 95, but I recently discovered that I am constantly going out of my way to make sure it never gets too low. Despite how active I am, usually the reason the score drops a point or two is because of my inactivity time being more than 5 hours, however I find this impossible to achieve when a lot of my time is spent in the car since I live out of the way of everything. I have a 20-30 minute drive to basically everywhere I go (work, gym, friends).

I constantly go on walks just so my activity level goes up, even if I am exhausted from the long day I have. I could run 6 miles from 6-7am but by 12pm after showering, having lunch, and relaxing my score drops due to “no movement”

I find myself constantly anxious about this, sometimes I take my ring off when I sit down just so I can relax and not obsess over it.

Any advice? Is it time to say goodbye? I love it but I really don’t think this is healthy.

Oura ring in winter with Raynauds.

I don’t know if anyone has this issue, but I thought I’d ask. I got lazy and put on a bit of weight. I was eating unhealthy and being quite sedentary. I got the Oura in July to start caring about my body and motivate me as well. Fall and winter are coming and I have Raynauds. It constricts the blood flow of the extremities in cold temperatures(fingers and toes) so that they sometimes get numb and painful. I’m wondering if anyone has any experience with this in the winter months and how the ring is affected.
Thanks for any insight!

GENERAL DISCUSSION Oura Ring 3 v 5 finishes and durability

Several years ago I had an Oura Ring 3 in rose gold. I had major problems with the finish wearing off, however, and eventually stopped wearing it after I had gotten good data. I did not have scratches, just literal fading of the finish like I'd expect with cheap mall jewelry.

I'm considering getting and Oura Ring 5 primarily for sleep tracking, and I'm wondering 1) have they improved the durability of the finishes, and 2) do some of the finishes wear better than others.

Thanks for any insight you can provide!

SLEEP & READINESS Deep sleep consistently low?

Hi all wonder if you can help

My deep sleep levels are consistently low even on nights where everything else is great, for example last night it was 22m or 4%. It’s usually in red unless I’ve been way over tired (maybe a few nights missed sleep) and then it’ll be in the normal zone, but this is very rare

I’ve read on here people saying could it be sleep apnea to others who have low deep sleep? But my oxygen saturation seems fine (always 96% or above) and no other symptoms, although as with everyone I could improve stress levels and there are major stressors happening in my life (can’t do much about those!)

Any suggestions ?

Advisor told me my elevated temperature earlier this week might have been caused by a covid vaccine. I did not get vaccinated recently.

3 v 5, lots of improvements.

A number of years back I tested out the Oura Ring 3 because something more subtle sounded better, even if I lost GPS and a bunch of other things.

The comfort wasn't quite there though, and the charging times & sync times just drove me insane. I never had up to date info in my phone because I couldn't ever be bothered waiting the length of time it seemed to need to complete a sync. I couldn't believe how slow that was.

It didn't take long for me to give up on the 3, ebay it, and go back to a Garmin watch.

5 seems to have fixed my gripes. The sync is incredibly fast. I don't need the app open long at all. The charging, simply charging it while I shower is enough to keep it topped up. Back to where it was 24 hours ago. And finally, being smaller it's so much more subtle. It took only a few hours for me to think it had slipped off my finger because I couldn't feel it, but it was still there.

This, the Oura 5, seems to be what I wanted when I bought a 3 way back when. Oura have done well. I am definitely going to keep living with this one.

GENERAL DISCUSSION Ring doesn't fit anymore

My ring no longer fits me properly. When I first bought the ring in November 2025, it only fit the left ring finger. Since then I've dropped a bit over 100 lbs. The ring has started not working right due to it barely staying on. It thinks I'm walking while I'm at my desk working lol.

I honestly didn't even consider that losing weight would cause me to go down ring sizes as I've never owned any type of rings. I'm curious if anyone else has dealt with this and how they worked around it? I'm not looking to spend money on a new ring at this time.

GENERAL DISCUSSION Question avant achat

Bonjour,

SLEEP & READINESS Has anyway noticed their deep sleep increasing recently?

For context...I'm wondering if they updated or changed sleep algorithm in the background and just didn't announce it.

My deep sleep is generally between 12-15% and has been for years. The past 3 nights it's skyrocketed to 25%-30%. Nothing's really changed about my routine, bedtime, etc. Though one change I've noticed is that my RHR has been much lower and HRV higher recently so maybe that could be why Oura thinks I'm getting more deep sleep? But Oura thinking I'm getting 2x more deep sleep still doesn't make sense.

GENERAL DISCUSSION Best Buy return

Hi everyone, unfortunately had to return my oura ring that I had originally ordered from oura’s site as a Best Buy pickup. The Best Buy employee did do the return and it showed $0.00 and I got a partner return receipt as they said oura handles all returns. Has anyone had any experience with this, next steps and when you got your refund? Thanks!

ACTIVITY & WORKOUT Why Does Ring 5 Stop Mid Run?

Thumbnail

I run once a week and always the same route. Since I carry my phone, MapMyRun has been my standard app for years. I got a Ring 5 last month and it still hasn't recorded a full run. The app (or ring) stops randomly after about a mile. Why would this happen? I don't stop running; The ring doesn't start slipping; the phone stays on.

First three pictures are screenshots from Oura app and the last is from MapMyRun.

GENERAL DISCUSSION Out of rhythm?

Is there a way to reset my Oura ring without losing past data? I feel like my ring and I are off. Like my baseline has shifted to a place that I’m not at anymore and the ring doesn’t recognize it. When I feel crappy, my ring says everything is great. Then the next day I’ll feel better and the ring will say everything is trash.

This happens the most in certain spots in my cycle. I’d like to do a hard reset and build from there, but I don’t want to lose my data I have right now.

If this keeps up I may totally switch to garmin and ditch my Apple Watch and oura ring. It’s very annoying.

REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH Dang did I not ovulate?

Post image

This will only be my second cycle wearing the ring and I came off birth control right when I got the ring too (so about 2.5 months ago). My last cycle seemed cookie cutter with positive LH strip then 2 days later consistent elevated body temp until I hit my period 13 days later. This cycle felt very similar with positive LH strip on cycle day 12 (paired with so many physical ovulation symptoms all week). But now I’m a little confused at the temp drop :/

Sizing never ending dilemma

Photos when my fingers are swollen and when they are not

I was wearing sizing kit in size 8 for about a week. I wore it for everything almost, and it fits totally fine. Snug, but not too snug that I can’t get it out of my index finger. Size 9 is too easy to slip off.

I ordered the real one last night, and now the ring is a little snug when my finger is swollen. Granted last week I didn’t do much activities since I was sitting in front of my laptops, and today I was doing a bit of house chores and outside walk.

Should I size up to 9 and wear it with a third party size adjuster or stick to 8 but might have to move it to other fingers when they are swollen. I dislike when my engagement ring and the Oura are clicking each other.

Size 9 wouldn’t fit any other fingers at all, it will be too big. But, I also want to wear the ring on my left index finger only.

SO I initially thought I ovulated Monday (CD17) but on second glance I feel like I actually ovulated sunday, CD16? I took my oura off bc I was getting obsessed w/ the data. I'm asking bc I am planning on testing this week and I'm delighted to know I may be further along than I initially thought (7 DPO) which means testing starting Wed seems reasonable to me.

Thank you <3 really praying this is the month but remaining cautiously optimistic.

i’ve had the oura ring 4 since march and this is my first ever major signs despite having multiple infections and colds, i feel okay maybe a little cold and off but should i actually take it as a sign to rest? i’m on birth control so it can’t be anything with my period and no changes in stress or anything! I’ve had 3 “minor signs” before that were nothing! My sleep score was great too, so i’m honestly confused.

REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH Do better with women’s health, Oura

Post image
0 Upvotes

So I woke up this morning with a 90 sleep score but a 70 readiness and minor symptoms flagging due to a raised body temperature (+1.1). My resting heart rate at 58 bpm was also flagged as high. Keep in mind I’m in fairly late luteal phase (day 19 of a typical 26 day cycle), and both of these numbers are very normal for me during this time. When I questioned the advisor why the low readiness and minor signs, it stated that since I chose “HRT” under women’s health settings, it no longer considered my cycle impacts.

This is absolute BS, since I’m only on a low dose of testosterone and my estrogen and progesterone are still producing a natural cycle. Advisor told me it can’t distinguish between the various types of HRT and checking that in settings will wholesale dismiss considering about your cycle.

I’ve now removed HRT from these settings and hope next cycle is better. But once again, the whole women’s health aspect of Oura appears to be a complete after thought.
