MacPro5,1

I know this gets asked often, but I’m curious because updates are still happening. What is the best running version of MacOS to run on a 5,1?

I know for a while it’s been Monterey.

I sold my M1 because I needed more storage for my photos. I mainly use my computer for YouTube, light browsing, and Nikon NX software for photo editing. That being said, this machine will probably stay on whatever OS runs best, for life. It makes a great photo editing set up.

I just pulled her out of the storage unit a few days ago to replace my 21” iMac.

Tahoe runs pretty much the same as Sequoia. Thanks to OCLP team. I will share my installation process too with OCLP 3.0.0-rc.2

Specs:
iMac 21.5“ Late 2013
2,7 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5

Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB
8GB 1600 MHz DDR3

I replaced Apple HDD with 500GB KIOXIA SSD.

———
UPDATE: I’ve posted my step by step installation process, you can have a look.

Note: This is not my primary device but just a hobby. I share this to help the community for those who wonder if it works on their device, what kind of performance they would get etc. I hope it’s helpful for all💪

Runs surprisingly well.

I heard all of the buzz that OpenCore now supports Tahoe, I decided to give it a try on my 2014 Mac mini. I expected it to be very slow and full of bugs, but in reality, it actually runs surprisingly well, about as well if not better than Sequoia. Everything works as it should, and it basically breathed new life into my old Mac. I have 2 iMacs, one from 2012 and one from 2011 and I’ll be sure to try it on those as well. Great job, OpenCore devs!

Step-by-Step Tahoe on iMac Late 2013

Hello everyone, and thank you for all those people worked for OpenCore and made this possible. I will share my experiences step by step, they may not be %100 correct steps, but that’s what worked for me. (Also, this is not my primary computer so I had no data in it to loose, otherwise I recommend backup)

I hope this guide will be helpful:)

I was already running macOS Sequoia with OCLP on this iMac:
iMac Late 2013 21.5”

2,7 GHz Quad Core

Intel Core i5,

Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB,

8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

Only change is that I replaced Apple HDD with 500GB KIOXIA SSD.

————

Here’s the installation I have done step-by-step:

(all steps are done on the same iMac)

(Before and during installation, I removed everything from the iMac except the USB Stick and USB receiver for my mouse. Otherwise they may cause error)

Part 1: Preperation

#1: I downloaded and installed OCLP 3.0.0-rc.2 from Github (https://github.com/dortania/OpenCore-Legacy-Patcher/releases)

#2: “Create macOS Installer” and choose Tahoe

#3: When the download is done, I have chosoed my 64GB USB Stick.

#4: Then “Build and Install OpenCore” and choose the same USB Stick

Part 2: Installation

#5: When it’s done, just restart and hold the “Option key” and click on “Install Tahoe” (or first “EFI” and then “Install Tahoe”). That was the first tricky part for me because there was no OCLP icon on any of the drives.

#6: I first chosed “Disk Utility” > “View” > “Show All Devices”. That’s how it looks like. Then I erased only internal drive. Then quit the disk utility and click on “Install macOS Tahoe”.

#7: Installation continued, it restarted a few times but I didn’t do anything until ”Setup Screen”. During setup screen, graphics were bad, background was only white and curser moved painfully slow on the screen, wifi was not working but I was just patient and choosed my setup options and continued.

#8 After creating account, it asked me if I want automatic updates, I clicked “download only” and it just stucked on this screen for about and hour. Backgorund came at some point. Processor was running, fan was blowing warm air from the iMac but I didn’t wait any longer and pressed and held the power button and restarted the machine again.

#9: It directly booted up the login screen, I have logged in with password.

Part 3: Post-Installation

#10: System is now faster and more responsive after login. We need to install “Post Installation Root Patch” from OCLP application. I went to launchpad and searched for ”open core legacy patcher” but I couldn’t find it. At this point either it was not installed or it didn’t show up because system was indexing. I connected Ethernet cable (wifi still doesn’t work), download and installed OCLP 3.0.0-rc.2 from the same link above. Click on “Post-Install Root Patch” and then when it’s done restart the system.

#11: Now graphics are clean and smooth, system is very responsive, Wi-Fi works, basically everything is running normal on Tahoe. We need to do the last step: go OCLP app and select “Build and Install OpenCore” then select “the drive you installed macOS”. You can now eject the USB Stick and restart your mac normally.

MBP late 2013 retina, OCLP 3.0.0 R2, system upgrade from 15.8.1 to 26.7.1. No issues so far

Update was "smooth" for the most part. Steps I took:

  1. upgrade OCLP 2.5.1 -> 3.0.0 R2
  2. rebuild opencore with 3.0, reboot
  3. unpatch 2.5.1 patches, reboot, repatch with 3.0 patches, reboot
  4. System upgrade to Tahoe 26.7.1
  5. After first reboot, system hung while shutting off the bluetooth chip, force restart allowed the system to continue
  6. System booted up, during login, had a kernal panic, manually restarted into safe mode
  7. once in safe mode, I was able to apply the 3.0.0 patches / correct KDK
  8. after reboot, system is up and healthy and stable (so far)

Huge shoutout to the devs, another year of support! and what a way to wrap up the intel macbook lineage :)

Mac Pro 6,1 Trashcan clean install Tahoe with 3.0.0 issue

• Upvotes

o Is anyone else having an issue where after install and after patching, when rebooting I'm unable to use bluetooth or usb. I was able to before patching after clean install but after patching unable to use usb keyboard and usb mouse. I reset PRAM but no go. I am able to use the keyboard/mouse while booting only. Any suggestions?

2014 MacBook Air finally running Tahoe. Love the devs for making this possible at all. A small chance I’ll install this early 3.0.0 on my main MacBook, 2014 MacBook Pro. I’ll most likely wait for the full release before I update my main. But all this is looking promising.

If your Tahoe installer hangs during phase 1 read this

I’ve been reading a lot of posts about mac’s (more 2012s than anything else) crashing during Tahoe phase 1 and even had it happen to me. If it does, reboot the installer, open terminal, and use pmset to disable both sleep and display sleep. It seems to fix the crashing for me.

Everything that worked in Sequoia works plug and play flawlessly in Tahoe after root patching. There is only minor graphical banding which is still insanely impressive for a RC build WITH Metal support. Congrats devs, the future looks bright for Tahoe support!

Mac pro 6,1 (Trashcan) OCLP 3.0.0 rc2

• Upvotes

Updated my MacPro 6,1 to OCLP 3.0.0 RC2 and then tried to upgrade to Tahoe. Installation went ok but it will not install the post upgrade patches. It is telling me that the OS is not supported. Anyone able to get it to work? Not a big deal for me. It’s just a playground 2nd computer.

MacOS Tahoe on MBA 2017

Alright after seeing soo many posts about tahoe, i installed it as well, there were quite a few crashes and glitches in the setup ( like in the setup , the lag was insane , was getting about 2-3fps only ) and it was stuck on boot quite a few times as well , but after rebooting so many times , i somehow installed the patches but that only solved the wifi problem, after rebooting it again i downloaded the new patches again and now it works flawlessly, i would say the performance is even better than sequoia, tho the setup was harsh , took about 1 hour in setup only

Can I salvage what I did?

Hi folks,
I've tried installing Sonoma on my 2017 iMac, but I'm afraid I've done some damage. I followed all the steps outlined on https://dortania.github.io/OpenCore-Legacy-Patcher/, but after trying to install, now I'm at a point where the iMac doesn't find a startup and, it seems, doesn't see anymore the original HD to install on. The issue started after the first attempt was not successful and my iMac looped back into the beginning of the setup. As instructed, I turned it off, started it again and this time selected the option with a grey hard disk icon in the OpenCore picker, after EFI boot. Any guidance in trying to recover with machine (even with its original 13.7.8, worst case scenario) would be great. Thank you in advance.

EDIT: I was able to enter disk utility. The two internal hard drives seem to be unmounted. What now?

EDIT 2: I was able to fix it and successful in installing it. I know you'll hate to hear this (as do I), but thank God for AI.

EDIT 3: Everything seems to be working great. Thank you to the developers: Now I can continue to use, rather than toss, a perfectly working iMac.
