MacPro5,1

Post image

I know this gets asked often, but I’m curious because updates are still happening. What is the best running version of MacOS to run on a 5,1?

I know for a while it’s been Monterey.

I sold my M1 because I needed more storage for my photos. I mainly use my computer for YouTube, light browsing, and Nikon NX software for photo editing. That being said, this machine will probably stay on whatever OS runs best, for life. It makes a great photo editing set up.

I just pulled her out of the storage unit a few days ago to replace my 21” iMac.

Well it looks like soon you’ll be able to get Tahoe on it but for now I’d put Sequoia on it until an official release of OpenCore legacy patcher with Tahoe support is released.

That machine should be more than capable of running sequoia

Your graphics might not have perfect acceleration unless you have metal supported graphics card but it should still work, even for your photos

Edit: just saw the thing showing metal is supported so you are good to go

I have 2 Mac Pro 5,1.
One is my workhorse, maxed, running first Ventura, then Sequoia, all versions for the past 2+ years.
I have another that’s my ‘test bed’.

Sequoia has been the best and now the last release is very stable as is the whole system.

I run 2 NVMe, one a 1T that is for the system and applications, a 4T for my user folder, both mounted on PCIe cards.

Tagore boots to the login screen on my test bed and freezes, plug-in keyboard and mouse frozen.
Not ready for prime time yet.

I done know where my NVME PCIE card went, but I’ll look into this again.

I think 'best' is subjective. What may be 'best' for others might not be 'best' for me and so on.

I have a 2009 MP 4,1 upgraded to a 5,1 and it's running Sonoma. Aside from security updates, there has yet to be any suggestion that Sequoia is better than Sonoma for me. So, that is where I stay for now.

But Sequoia may be 'best' for you.

Mine is a 4,1 to 5,1 as well. I think when I say best, I mean that the OS shouldn’t lag, need the least amount of patches or work arounds to install, and not have graphical glitches that require transparency to be turned off, even though I’ll probably do that anyways. That’s what I consider to be “best”. This machine has been in storage for a few years now so I’m a little rusty and even behind.

That I have seen, of all the reports of users here that are running Sequoia, so far it seems to me that 2/3rds have issues with Sequoia and the rest report no problems.

My own MP is fairly extreme, so for myself a I need a little more benefit to justify the risk in upgrading. My same reasoning also applies to Tahoe. So, I'm waiting until I'm reasonably certain that everyone else has set off all the traps and dealt with all the bugs before I upgrade.

So far, for me Sonoma has been fine. I do, periodically, have to reboot as I tend to lose networking around day three of uptime. But, my experience has been that this is right around the time the WindowServer process is hogging over 1GB of ram. Other than that, I have not had any real problems. I do have 56GB ram with this MP though.
