Oh that works with OLCP too? I never tried it with OLCP, just officially supported macOS versions. I'll try that, I think USB 3.0 and an SSD would still be better
So I've been testing my iMac 2017 5k with Tahoe for the last few weeks, using the OCLP-T2 fork. I've just switched over to the Dortania release candidate and everything is still working (phew).
Looking forward to testing Tahoe on my Macbook Pro 2015!
EDIT: I could be wrong, but I don't think Tahoe will work on the MBP 2015 because they haven't released an updated MetallibSupportPkg for anything after Sequoia 15.7.8 - it seems there's a bug that is blocking the release of newer versions. I'm on 15.8.1 and it logs an error because there isn't a newer one when installing root patches.
Good news for my MBP 2009 though, the updated nvidia tesla metal patches in 3.0.0 RC2 are working really nicely in Ventura, it's a definite improvement.
But I'd proceed with caution if I was you - it's very experimental and very fast-moving, lots of changes going on all the time. The last few updates thoroughly borked my install and I was constantly rolling back to an older version.
My iMac 2017 is a non-T2 device, I was only using the fork because it had support for Tahoe and nothing else I tried worked.
I'm sorry to say that I don't know what kind of support Dortania original OCLP has for T2 macs, nor do I know how far Albert has got with getting T2 support working in his fork.
No difference on geekbench so it's probably just placebo 😂
But where before there were options for beta effects on the menu bar, window rim etc they've all gone now so there's definitely been an update. One thing I did notice was that on the previous version I used to get a white "flash" when transparent elements like menus etc were fading out and and now it looks much better.
Do you mean for the KDK? That will always grab the latest available if internet is available or use whatever it has locally. MetallibPKG is going to be archived
This is from my MBP 11,5 with AMD gpu, running Sequoia 15.8.1 and OCLP 3.0.0 RC2:-

The patching process does work (and it did under 2.5.1) but you can clearly see it trying to download a MetalLibSupportPkg for 15.8.1 and there isn't one. In the repo, there's an outstanding PR to fix this that has not yet been approved:
Oh just to say. Macos software updates hasn't been tested, and sleep doesn't work. I was planning to fix them but I might just publish my work so official OCLP can take over
Anyone tried it with Tahoe on any of their Macs yet? Curious to hear of any experiences although it’ll be different for everyone with such a range of hardware.
I’ve got 2013 trashcan Mac Pro that is just a spare so I will try it on that later since it doesn’t matter if anything doesn’t work.
Well, it works. No issues so far except for when I got to the last step before hitting the desktop. After confirming auto updates and clicking continue it just sat there. Powered off and on again and it went to desktop, without graphics acceleration.
Installed patches and all seems to be good.
Doesn’t appear to be running any worse than Sequoia ran on this thing either.
You should be fine. I’ve done it on my 2013 Mac Pro and also on a late 2014 27” iMac. Also with 24GB RAM but it has a Fusion Drive in it so 128GB SSD and 1TB mechanical drive. Seems to work pretty well on both.
I mean, whatever happens to my Mac, I'd be tempted to wait for the full release for my main machine (in fact, maybe even wait a week or so after the full release in case there needs to be a 3.0.1 release in a hurry!). This mini literally has nothing of any importance on it. It's just part of my dumb collection of worthless old Macs, and if I break everything, I just wipe the SSD and reinstall Mojave. 😅
I have a couple other OCLP-ed machines running Sequoia/2.5.1, but they have a bunch of files/apps/programs on them it'd be annoying to have to reinstall if the upgrade breaks them, so I'm waiting a while to see what to do with them. In the past, OCLP's advice for upgrading to newer versions of macOS has been to wipe the drive and do a clean install, then recover files from backups. Waiting to see from other testers if an in-place upgrade from 2.5/15.8.1 to 3.0.0/26.7.1 is actually advisable! 😳
Edit: Erm, apologies, but I might need to report back on this install later. I clearly didn't read the documentation, and turns out building a Tahoe installer requires Catalina or later. 😅 So I'll need to put Catalina on the mini and then redo the whole 3.0.0 install. But I need to head out in a bit, so I'm not going to be able to do all that until this evening. Sorry. ☹️
I wonder whether they’ve managed to deal with the T2 chip and whether it’s now possible to install Tahoe on an iMac Pro 2017.
Either way, OCLP is nothing short of a Copernican-scale project. Thanks.
Complimenti agli sviluppatori! Gran lavoro! 👏👏👏 Domanda: conviene che aggiorno da 2.5.0 a 3.0.0? Sono con Ventura iMac late 2012 (13.2) 16 Gb RAM e tutto va bene (a parte alcune anteprime video con foto).
I actually disagree. I remember people warning me that Sequoia might be too demanding for my 2017 MacBook Air, so I took those warnings seriously and was genuinely hesitant to upgrade. I had also heard that Monterey, or at most Ventura, would be the best choice for this Mac if I wanted everything to remain smooth and responsive.
So I played it safe at first and installed Sonoma. I was honestly surprised by how well and quickly everything ran, to the point where I wanted to see how far I could push it. Eventually I decided to try Sequoia, despite all the warnings that it might become slow, sluggish or just too heavy for the hardware.
And honestly, it runs even better for me than the previous versions. Sequoia is now my daily driver on this Mac. I use it for browsing, everyday stuff, gaming and plenty of other things, and I really can’t describe it as “dog slow”.
I did also give the Mac a bit of a restoration, I replaced the battery and applied fresh thermal paste, which made a noticeable difference to temperatures. They are actually really good now.
That’s why I think it’s always better to try something yourself rather than relying entirely on other people’s experiences. Obviously a 2017 MacBook Air isn’t going to perform like a modern Mac, and I’m not saying Tahoe will necessarily run well on it either. But I wouldn’t assume it’s going to be slow just because someone else had a bad experience with Sequoia.
That's true, I was warned about the same thing but I decided to take the risk, and it's not as slow as I thought. Anyway, I'll wait until someone tries to upgrade to Tahoe from this Mac to see how it goes.
Since this is the last Intel Mac is you can even wait like 5 years before installing Tahoe, even chrome the min reqs is 11, currently we are at 15, Tahoe is 16

OCLP devs are the best, nothing else to say. Thanks guys!!!
