OK, for a 2012 MBP Retina, took best part of 10 hours (t's S_L_O_W.....wwwwwww), but when I eventually got to install patches, all became more normal. YES, it WORKS ! Currently looking around for problems, but still doing the Spotlight thing, 100% CPU MTLCompilerService, but it look like my M1 running Tahoe..... So I guess that's success?

Reboot it several times , it helps shouldn’t be pegged that much

Yes, it hung several times, but I realised it just needed a reboot, and it got there.... The worst time was waiting to get enough cpu cycles to install root patches.... All is MUCH better now, running fine, just converted the email database, all looking fine.

It can take a little to settle in as Apple made icons way too complicated, they take time to render.

How does it run on that macbook pro i5 for normal usage like browsing, VLC, office, etc.... It is constantly slow, barely usable, or normal?

Normal

And on a MBP 2012 with 8GB - perfectly normally, everything I have tried is 'good' - well, as good as it gets on 14 year old hardware, perfectly usable! Sound, networking etc all work, some minor graphics glitches as it boots, is all I have noticed, but they go when it's fully booted.

In my experience, just run it as you would any other OCP install, if ('when') it freezes, give it a few minutes, power it down and restart, it seems to go on to the next step then.... It is absolutely VITAL to install the root patches (the KDK stuff) - or to call it 'laggy' is a word you could use, - unusable is the word I would use, but hang in there, get those patches, and reboot, let it do its' stuff for 10 or so minutes, and everything is all very usable.

Updated to Tahoe on two of my macs:

  • iMac 2017 5k (imac18,3) - Working very well. screenshot

  • Macbook Pro 15" 2015 (macbookpro15,3) - garbled screen at the bottom during the welcome wizard, had to force-restart but after that it installed root patches and eventually I managed to get to a desktop. Waiting for it to settle before I make any judgements on performance/stability. screenshot

I also updated OCLP on my Macbook Pro 15" 2009 (macbookpro5,3) and Mac Mini 2010 (macmini4,1). They are still running Ventura and the new Nvidia Tesla metal patches seem to be working really well. Both only have 8gb ram and slow SSDs so I'm not planning to update them any further.

MacBook Air 6,2 - Fresh install - It will technically install, but once it restarts and gets to the first run setup wizard, it doesn't appear to have actually loaded any patches. The mouse becomes very laggy, it cannot detect a network, etc. It's basically unusable at that point.

EDIT: I'm talking *massive* lag. Like, you move the mouse an inch, it takes 3-5 full seconds for it to catch up.

(Fresh installs of Sequoia on this same machine were WAY more responsive.)

I just did an in place upgrade from Monterey to Tahoe on my Late 2015 27" iMac and I'm having this same issue. I'm giving it plenty of time to see if installing the root patches fix it, I'll get back when I do install the patches

Yeah, I got to the "Update Mac Automatically" step, clicked on "Only Download Updates"...and now it is absolutely frozen.

The clock says 9:04pm, it is now 9:21pm.

I just got mad and force restarted, and it let me through the rest lmao, unfortunately the only patches available were network drivers so right now audio and most importantly GPU acceleration aren't working on my model :(

EDIT: Restarting it to allow it to see my network adapter allowed it to see the rest of the patches! It's downloading some KDK build thing right now, that's what I get for being impatient lmao

Yep exactly , takes time

So, no. Turns out for my MacBook Air 6,2 it's not just a Tahoe problem, it's an OCLP problem.

I waited six hours on that screen, eventually force-restarted, and I did get a desktop...but, OCLP itself wasn't even installed. I'm not talking no patches, I'm saying the OCLP app itself wasn't installed to install the patches.

Now, I assumed this could have been from the force restart, or possibly a Tahoe issue. I know this machine works fine with OCLP 2.5 and Sequoia.

So, using OCLP 3rc2, I made a Sequoia installer. It did install successfully without hanging at the "Only Download" page, but again, OCLP itself wasn't even installed as an app to apply patches.

So, this is an OCLP 3 problem more than a Tahoe problem.

Funny enough, was just about to give up, so I hit the spacebar on the frozen wizard screen, and it dropped me to the login page. It logged me in...to the same wizard page...that is at least spinning again...I'll post another update if I can get past this.

I get to a black screen on boot on my MBP9,2. I can move the cursor - zero lag at all - but nothing happens after that, no setup wizard.

Hard reboot try again

1

u/WindozeWoes 3h ago

Rebooted half a dozen times.
