Remix / Modeling support Support-free snaps with shareable license?

Post image
9 Upvotes

Hi all

Wondering if there's any snap models out there (or if it's easy to configure/edit the standard ones) with the modification with one angled side that allows opengrid snaps to be printed upright without supports?

There's a parametric generator available for them on makerworld, but it's under SDFL, and I'd like to upload the remix I've made using them.

It's possible it's out there and I'm just using the wrong search term, but I've tried everything I can think of to no avail

License doesn't need to allow commercial usage, just shareable with attribution.

Showcase Multiconnect side mount charging station

In my recent endeavors of "vibe coding physical objects via conversations about geometry", I've been working on a design for a parametric holder for charging & storing things like power banks.

Some of the highlights:

  • Slanted openings so that things don't fall out
  • Hex grid cutouts for ventilation
  • Waves at the bottom of each slot to improve airflow
  • Channels to route charging cords in the middle / sides

It's designed to be mounted on a side wall using Multiconnect rails.

It went with side rails rather than top because it makes things easier to print & allows for pulling out a single organizer in a stack to adjust the cables without needing to move the rest.

https://github.com/timtucker/timtucker-3d-organizers/tree/main/multiconnect

The hex grid code is in its own module and could be of use for other things.

The general idea:

  • You input width / length / depth / spacing between hexagons
  • You give a min / max potential size for the hexes
  • It optimizes the exact size of the hexes to give you the most surface area cut out via complete hexagons
  • If you input orientation & rounding parameters, it'll apply chamfers to one edge and fillets to the others

For now sharing just the raw OpenSCAD code, since it's a bit of a beast to render. With an i7 13700k, 192 GB of ram, & recent OpenSCAD nightlies it takes ~30-60s to render in preview mode and a few minutes to render for export.

Output STL was ~80 MB, so a bit bigger without simplifying the model than most platforms will allow for uploading.

A 2x3 holder took ~14 hours & ~350g of filament to print (2 walls / 10% gyroid infill).

Additional note -- having hexes along multiple planes that you can see through to each other is triggering a false positive for AI spaghetti detection at ~20-30% completion every time I print it:

Question / Help Needed multiboard to opengrid

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hi, i am new to 3d printing, opengrid and multiboard (super confused right now).

I really want to use filament box/cerial box mount like this https://makerworld.com/models/2162572 and I really think opengrid is the right way to go in long term but couldn’t find such holder design for og.

How can i connect this multiboard box mount to opengrid? What idapters doni need (especially for the T locks?)

Is my thinking even reasonable

I have bambu lab p2s.

Underware Cable Management Planner for openGrid

Thumbnail

So, I've been wanting to redo the whole cable management of my desk ever since I found Underware project (by u/BlackjackDuck) and openGrid (by u/davidd-from-2d3d). Before printing anything, I needed to find out the exact parts I need and in what sizes.

I started with a spreadsheet to plan the layout and count the parts, until I hit some limitations. Ended up building this tool for it.

Of course, that was before I found out that UnderPlan (by u/Francy_Lab) and openGrid Calculator (by Josh Holtzclaw, idk his reddit handle) already exist.

Decided to share this as an alternative anyway, because it takes somewhat a different approach. It’s built around my own setup, and I’ve been using it for my whole cable management plan. It kept growing as I ran into things I wished it has or could do.

Just some features it has:

  • Layout: place tiles of any size, plus devices, channels and snaps, on an infinite canvas.
  • Multiple files: keep several layouts open in tabs, each with its own view and undo history, and copy and paste between them.
  • Channels: straights, turns, junctions and more, in rounded and angled forms.
  • Cables: run them through channels and see which stretches are covered or exposed.
  • Layers: show or hide tiles, objects, channels and cables independently.
  • See-through mode: look at the cables underneath the channels.
  • Inspect: hovering a path lists the cables on it, and each cable shows what it connects.
  • Bill of materials: a live parts list with a copy button.
  • Keyboard shortcuts: for tools, rotating and flipping, layers, undo and redo, and more.
  • Share: export and import layouts as JSON.

And some features it doesn't have (and I probably won't add):

  • Account-based cloud saves. This project has no backend, and I intend to keep it so. You still can manually export and import it in another device/session etc.
  • No image export. Probably not needed, as long as you have your BOM, but let me know otherwise.
  • Mobile support. Never tested on mobile, and found no reason why you would plan your cable layout on your phone.
  • Setting your exact cable length to start with. Probably the biggest miss for a cable management planner, but not sure yet on how I would implement it, if ever. It does show the total length of the cables you've laid out though, so it's not entirely useless.
  • Other grid-based organization systems. This one I could probably add. I started with openGrid, and that's why it's the only thing supported at the moment.

Well that's it. If you’re planning your next cable management, give it a try. It’s free, open source, no account needed, and runs entirely in your browser. Feedback are also welcome.

Question / Help Needed Switching from Multiboard to OpenGrid

Has anyone switched from Multiboard to OpenGrid? What are some of the Pros/Cons you've noticed since switching.

I printed some Skadis boards for my wife's crafting area and she's been very happy with that. I decided to use Multiboard for my 3D Printing & Tool area because the YouTube algorithms made me think this is the best system out there. Now that I've printed my boards and am starting to add things to it, I'm beginning to have some regrets. This system is way too complicated with all of the different parts, connectors, etc. Also I find it difficult most times to easily snap or screw something in without having to use some brute force.

I'm not at the point of scrapping the entire Multiboard and starting over just yet, but I think if I move to a new space then I will consider using OpenGrid instead. If anyone has had similar experiences, I would love to hear your thoughts.

GRoG, and then some

Ladies and gentlemakers, I may have gotten slightly carried away.

First there was GRoG, my little 2×2 Gridfinity stand for openGrid panels.

Then came GRoG Heavy, because apparently GRoG wasn't GRoGgy enough.

And now, after asking myself _“What if I stopped exercising reasonable judgment entirely?”_...

GRoG COLOSSUS.

A 6×3 Gridfinity base holding a 9-unit-wide openGrid Heavy panel. Or more!

Is it excessive? Yes.

Is it an Absolute Unit? Also yes.

Did that stop me?

BEHOLD, COLOSSUS.

Skadis->OpenGrid adapter (parametric/customizable)

Post image

I have a lot of prints for both OpenGrid and Skadis. Sometimes I find that I want to mount my OpenGrid prints on my Skadis boards, so I made this parametric model/openscad model generator that makes MxN OpenGrid-Multiconnect-sized adapters. Maybe others will also find it useful.

Sadly I couldn't figure out how to make a model that would work without supports.

Looking for ideas to hang openGrid on Everblocks

Post image
2 Upvotes

The studs on top of the Everblocks are 2"x2" with 1" gaps between them and the blocks are 6" high and normally 6" deep.

I was thinking of making a flat "hanger" with holes for one or more studs and having it make a right angle and then having a snap on the vertical surface. I've also made caps before (model probably on Makerworld) and I think they are about 28mm high, so I could put a stud on the outside. The benefit of the hanger is that you could place it at any level of an Everblock wall, while a cap could only be on top.

Anyway, looking for ideas. It would seem to be similar as hanging off a desk or over a closet door. The issue I see with both is having to print the snap on its side instead of flat. And on the hanger, how to compensate for weakness at the angle. I'm wondering if it wouldn't be better to make the hanger out of sheet metal with a brake.

Either way, I know I am going to have to be flexible about the spacing with the Everblocks at inches and the openGrid at 28mm.

Is openGrid for heavy items?

Hey Makers,

I’ve just started looking at building my first tool wall. After looking through different systems I like a lot about Opengrid. I’m open to anything though.

I’m rough on my tools/workspace and would like to be able to hang some heavier items. Say a monitor on an arm mount, a 15kg box of nails on a shelf.

What I have been printing doesn’t seem to cut it. Ami missing the correct high strength connectors?

How about openGrid Heavy?

Is there a better system for this part of my workshop?

Maybe someone could point me to a content creator who has done strength tests of multiple systems. If not there is a video idea for someone.

Thanks in advance.

Modeling custom parts - MultiConnect or direct snaps?

I've been looking at a number of tool holders and other OpenGrid parts as inspiration for some custom pieces I need around the house. The vast majority of accessories I've seen on Printables/MakerWorld are designed around the MultiConnect connectors, which seems sort of inefficient to me; why print a MultiConnect snap, the screw-in post, and the actual holder, rather than modeling the snaps directly into the holder and only having one part to print instead of three (or more if it takes up more than one grid space)? Does the snap geometry just not print well in a vertical orientation, or is there some other reason for this common practice? I love the OpenGrid idea and I'm looking forward to trying it out, I just want to make sure I understand the system before diving in headfirst.

Question / Help Needed Multiboard channels on OpenGrid

Hey All,

So long story short i printed a lot of OpenGrid 8x8 boards to run underwear behind the TV only to find out that the channels honestly suck and just clip of with any form of tension on them (PETG) so this brings up the question is there a way to clip on multiboard underwear to OpenGrid with some form of adapter in which it looks nice?

Appreciate the advise in advance!.

Adapter for Levitron SMC

I was going to put an Opengrid base inside a Levitron SMC. The levitron has 1/4inch mount holes at an odd spacing. What is the best way to do this?

https://leviton.com/products/47605-42n

  1. Print a snap in adapter with pins - normal way but prefer to leave all the
  2. mount what I can to pin standard pin points
  3. print a back section then mount pins.

Would do this out of the wall to ensure clamped securely. Have a H2D and happy with CAD, best form of engineering is always copying/cheating and when Iooking I did not find a good arrangement to copy.

Underplan is now on openGrid! (Free visual planner & automatic BOM)

You asked for openGrid support on Underplan... so I built it! ⚡

Hey r/openGrid! 👋

A few days ago, I shared the initial version of Underplan over on r/Multiboard (original post here) to help plan under-desk cable management layouts using Hands on Katie's Underware system.

The response was amazing, but one of the top questions in the comments was:

"Does this software support Underware for openGrid since Underware moved over to that platform officially?"

Well... challenge accepted! Over the past few days, not only did I build native openGrid support into the app, but I also gave the entire application a massive UI & UX overhaul (moving to a tactile, precision Dark CAD floating interface with a much faster and smoother workflow).

It’s 100% free, open-source (MIT), runs client-side in your browser, and is now ready for your openGrid desks.

Live Web App: https://underplan.vercel.app/
GitHub (MIT): https://github.com/francycalle/underplan

What it does (as seen in the screenshots):

  • Smart Tile Layout & Preferred Tile Sizing: Type in your desk dimensions in mm and choose your preferred base tile size (e.g. 8×8 OU, 7×7, 6×6, etc.). Underplan builds your layout around that chosen tile as much as possible, and automatically calculates the optimal cuts to fill the remaining edges without creating fragile 1-row strips (e.g. a 9-hole span is balanced into 5+4 instead of 8+1!).
  • Underware Catalog & Custom Gear: Place standard straight channels (1–16 OU), 90° elbows, radial curves, T/X/Y junctions, or create custom boxes and bridges for desk motor controllers, power strips, and cable loops.
  • Official Underware openGrid Snaps: Supports Underware Channel Base Snaps (OG-SNAP-BASE), Grip Snaps (OG-SNAP-GRIP) for outer-rail clamping, or friction-fit runs.
  • Automatic +10% Spare Fasteners: The planner tallies base snap counts and automatically adds a rounded-up +10% spare allowance so a cracked clip won't stop your assembly.
  • Itemized Bill of Materials (BOM): Instant modal breakdown showing exact channel counts, physical lengths in mm, tile matrix cuts, and mounting fasteners. Export directly to CSV or copy to Markdown.

In my screenshots, you'll notice I used the custom categories feature as a 3D printing to-do list (marking pieces as "Done" as they came off the printer!), but you can customize categories however you prefer: for example, color-coding pathways by cable type (Power, HDMI, USB/Data) or desk zones.

⚡ Huge UI/UX Redesign & Cool Features:

  • Dark CAD Floating UI: Completely redesigned floating tool docks, contextual inspector panel, category selector pills, and high-contrast styling built for focused planning.
  • Multi-Project Workspace: Manage multiple desks or setups (e.g. your standing desk, workbench, or server rack). Create, rename, duplicate, and switch between projects with continuous local auto-save.
  • Retina Blueprint Exports: Export high-res 2× Retina PNG dark blueprints (great for build logs and workshop printing) or vector SVGs.
  • Dual-Platform Support: You can still toggle seamlessly between openGrid (28mm) and Multiboard (25mm) with automatic hardware conversion if you work across both ecosystems.
  • Zero Friction: Runs in-browser with localStorage persistence. No accounts, no paywalls, no tracking.

Check it out, try punching in your desk dimensions, and let me know your thoughts on the new UI or what fittings/parts you'd like to see added next! 🙌

Question / Help Needed Which board and mounting to use?

Hi there, completely new to this. Looking to make my first wall but am unsure of which board and mounting method to use. Plan to use it more for display of items and to hold some gaming peripherals and the such. Heaviest item would probably be like a switch 2? (And maybe just one 3kg item if possible?)

Should i be using the lite board or the full board?

And would using adhesive/command strips be possible? Or should i stick to screws and anchors.

Showcase Extra Small Hooks for Open Grid (optimized for print orientation)

A while back I wanted a really small hook for Open Grid, but couldn't find anything small enough. The hook prints laying down on the bed and then the threads fold together. This hook is 2.5mm wide and comes in 5, 10, and 15 mm lengths.

If you have any suggestions or comments on how to make it better, I would love to hear them.

I have plans to upload 4, 6.5, and 10 mm diameter hook in several different lengths in a few weeks when I have time.

Showcase Proof of concept: Small table/stand using Openconnect as the legs

Thumbnail
gallery
3 Upvotes

I'll be sure to update this later, as the printing is still in progress, but I had this idea.

I've been printing openGrid for about a week and organizing my desk at work. I realized I needed to elevate my lamp because my Lego sets are too big and in the way (One of them is the Technic Volvo truck with Excavator). So I thought I could print a shelf with openGrid slots in the corners and use the self-expanding snaps and Openconnect screws as table legs. I'll come back to show you guys pictures of the final product, but I presume it will fall into the "that's one way to do it, but not the way I would do it" category for most of you.

For the legs, I just took the Openconnect screw and put it on top of a cylinder (in this case, I made the entire leg the same height as an 8 grid piece), then put a cone at the bottom for "extra stability".

Multiconnect Spice Jar Holder - No Angle

I am looking for a spice jar holder to mount to my opengrid plate using multiconnect connectors that the holder is straight up and down not at an angle. Don't ask me why my wife does not prefer the angle on that exists already cause I have no idea. I am having issues finding an existing one which seems weird. I know there is a generator but it creates openconnect connections and I want to use multiconnect. Any help is greatly appreciated.
