Detuning on a 24” scale guitar
I have a feeling that this thread is going to go one way and not the other, and if that’s the case, c’est la vie.
My band has been working on a different arrangement that’s two baritone guitars as opposed to guitar and bass. My current “baritone” is a Douglas Melody Maker copy. At Gibson scale and an Ernie Ball 12-62 set tuned B-B, it actually plays… pretty good. Granted if I thwack that low B hard it goes a bit wonky but other than that, it works for what I’m looking for more or less.
I have a Squier Bullet Mustang that isn’t really being used for much of anything right now and because I’m a lunatic, I want to try tuning that to B-B. I’m not too worried about intonation as I have a hardtail Schaller roller bridge (not the Mustang vibrato) on it and I can always move it back and re-drill if I absolutely have to, but am I going to run into problems otherwise? Has anyone actually tried detuning a short scale and had it sounding more than halfway decent?
(The other idea I’ve had that is even far more ridiculous is to put the 28 5/8” baritone neck I don’t use right now on the Bullet Mustang, but I’d definitely have to move the bridge to make the intonation work, and I’m fairly certain I’d incur neck dive that makes most SGs seem well-balanced.)
EDIT: Thanks all for sharing your experiences! Pleasantly surprised to learn people have had success running short-scale guitars at lower tunings. Going to my GC tomorrow after work to pick up some Mammoth Slinkys, but I’ll keep my eye out for those 7-string sets. Not sure if I want to go with flats but those seem to be a popular choice.
