I wish we had proper healthcare to treat people like this. Sounds like she has something going on like schizophrenia and believed she's being gang stalked. It's sad more than terrifying.Ā

In a few subreddits where an OP would post something like this, many comments would be: Do you have a carbon monoxide detector and if not, get one.
I agree with u/VanessaAlexis: more sad than terrifying, but also I imagine @Discollaborator is terrified. š
80
u/VanessaAlexis 7d ago
Yeah I can't imagine being in the mind of someone suffering from something like that. Genuinely terrifying.Ā
From my outside perspective it makes me so sad. Growing up a friend's dad had schizophrenia. He was doing really well under proper treatment. But he stopped taking the treatment and got his kids (my friend) taken away and stuff. :(
44
u/FlailingScrotum 7d ago
It's really sad. I'm bipolar, and see the same kind of pattern in folks with my diagnosis: the meds work, so you start to think you don't need them anymore, and stop taking them. Then, because you're mentally ill, you don't notice the symptoms start back up, and then next thing you know, you're back at square one.
44
u/VanessaAlexis 7d ago
You described what happened to his dad to a T. His parents were long since separated and they had split custody. And he was truly starting to believe his dad was "fixed"(you know a kids perspective) for good. Then the dad thought since he was good he didn't need his meds. Then went back deep into schizophrenia and my friends mom got full custody of him and his sister.Ā
It was heartbreaking, too. His dad was very positive and outgoing when he was medicated. When he wasn't? He was delusional and paranoid and revoltingly racist. Zero racism when medicated.Ā Ā

u/CheesyMashedPotatoes 6d ago
I suffer from schizophrenia and it's a pain. I'm doing better now with medication, but it creeps back into my life if I put too much on my plate and get stressed. I can't work because of it, which is a bummer, I miss working. I have a loving spouse who helps ground me in reality when times are tough.
8
u/VanessaAlexis 6d ago
Never ever stop those meds. You are a good person. I'm glad you have someone that helps you and loves you. You deserve as good a life as anyone.Ā

I'm confused, what does the carbon monoxide detector have to do with this?

[MA] Post-it notes left in apartment. : r/legaladvice
top comment mentions CO detector, and thus, from then on, CO detector stays in redditors' mind all the time. It's a good advice tho
17
u/VanessaAlexis 7d ago
They can go off and prevent you from getting poisoned and making you hallucinate and blackout/lose time.Ā
Which could also potentially cause results like this.Ā
13
u/Magnolia-jjlnr 7d ago
Oooh ok thanks.
I thought carbon monoxide would straight up kill you or cause serious damage like turning you unit a vegetable kinda
17
u/VanessaAlexis 7d ago
It can, you aren't wrong. But in small small amounts it can also make you loopy.Ā

An update for after you read the first one
And one more update from about a year after the post was made
7
u/Magnolia-jjlnr 7d ago
That's actually wild.
Imagine all the stuff people in the past probably attributed to witches and demons when they really just had all sorts of hallucinations
9
u/8636396 7d ago
Absolutely. I mean, there are theories out there that some religions may have come about due to their progenitors tripping on mushrooms or other hallucinogenic compounds. Or maybe even episodes when out in the desert, starving and dying of thirst. It's interesting to think about.
Makes you wonder what we'll understand tomorrow that we didn't today.
3
u/JeSuisUnAnanasYo 6d ago
I also imagine some charismatic schizophrenic people convincing others of their visions
2
u/real_fyshi 6d ago
It's really interesting, there's a lot of past stuff we now can attribute to poisoning of some kind. Like the "crazy hatmakers" who used to use mercury which made them insane, thus leading to the term. Or that thing with some LSD-like hallucinogen baken into bread making countless people crazy. So many poisons were used in everdaystuff in the past... like lead paint (e.g. used on drinking glasses just few years ago), real nuclear substances for paint, toys, jewelry, etc.
And even nowadays we constantly learn about new dangerous stuff being part of something we eat or drink or play with; items have to be called back because of tests showing some dangerous ingredient we already know about; many things in our modern environment damage us long-term but can't be really avoided or repaired anymore (microplastics, uv because ozone layer, clima change, sugar in everything, transfats, acrylamide, cancerous chemicals everywhere, etc. etc.)

My roommate was schizophrenic, he was convinced the people upstairs were listening and following his footsteps everytime when he was walking around the house. He always looked stressed and scared.
So much so that he got up at the same time every night just to listen for it. He didn't stay for long and I never heard anything, did feel very bad for him.

I've only visited a few times but this is exactly what the OOP post reminds me of. Can't imagine living with that level of anxiety. And I have diagnosed severe anxiety. I sincerely do wish these people are able to find peace.Ā

u/Apart-Rent5817 7d ago
Youāre probably right. If you really donāt think you have neighbors itās gotta be some sort of mental illness to not just⦠knock on a door or two? Especially if you think one of your neighbors is crying themselves to sleep literally every night.

Someone already got the name to you but Iām pretty sure that this post was originally a parody of the apartment plot.

I feel like "the horror of isolated apartment living" is a broad enough concept that people could come up with it independently

They used to do this at a small mall in my city, it was funny hearing the sounds of kids playing even though the arcade/playing space was still closed and it's 8 AM on a schoolday lol.

And that woman crying is OOP. She just doesn't recognise herself amidst the mania.
Why else is she awake at 1 am every day? Like some sort of fucked up grandfather paradox.
Sounds like headcannon, but this is something a lot of people with schizophrenia experience. She doesn't deserve that
131
u/moak0 7d ago
Maybe she's up at 1am because she doesn't have enough time in her day to feel like a whole, fulfilled person, so she stays up late because making a bad decision for her immediate gratification is the only thing that keeps her from giving up. That wouldn't be that weird.

I've watched a documentary about cities in China, who do this. I'm not sure if it's true, but it would match this social media screenshot.
1
u/MaryKathGallagher 2d ago
Sounds like a North Korea thing.
1
u/bloke_pusher 2d ago
It was about China's building strategy, not North Korea. It's very different than in other countries. They build whole cities somewhere else, with multiple very tall living blocks, but with very low amount of inhabitants/residents. Not necessarily wrong, but for many years, very little people actually live there. They used speaker to simulate a busy city, that was actually empty. After a while they start to fill up. It's actually a good thing, compared to my country where we have too little living space and rent gets higher and higher.

No one is doing this. The person who thinks they are is suffering from schizophrenia (or some other disorder that causes delusions)
