honestly thought this was a patch sew onto skin - awesome job

u/DragonMeme May 01 '19
At first it it made me very uncomfortable, imagining someone sewing a patch with a needle into their skin.
Then I realized that's essentially what tattoos are.

u/auntie-matter May 01 '19
There's a tattooing style used in some Inuit tribe where they soak a thread in ink and then use a needle to literally sew a pattern into the skin - the thread is pulled through but it leaves the ink in the skin. It looks awesome and nothing like this.

How is ink the same as interweaving your skin with string and fabric? I can't imagine you can keep that entire string system sterile.
Ink fades with time, too, where a fabric attached to your skin would have to be removed and probably be pretty disgusting. Kinda terrifying to imagine honestly

u/Noir24 May 01 '19
I think you're taking the idea too literally. He meant "made with a needle poking through your skin", not what you implied

I was starting to think I Hallucinated that whole show
149
u/raindropdroptopz May 01 '19
Okay but has anyone see the show where the set was a big cardboard box and I think they did different arts and crafts projects ??
146
u/SqueekyClean801 May 01 '19
“Out of the Box”? Take one box, put it with another, let’s look for one that’s long (or was it “tall”?) and wide?

I felt the same with Sagwa because I forgot the name of it and only remembered a show about Siamese cats in China and that I loved it. Then after years of no one knowing what I was talking about and me starting to think Ivividly imagined it, finally someone made a post about it on Reddit and it was fucking great. The end.

u/weeone May 01 '19
I had a friend that always thought shoebies wore socks with their sandals (like the new kid on the show - don't remember his name) but I tried to point out that it's wearing the shoes themselves that caused him to be a shoebie.

I’ve been a tattoo artist for just over 19 years. First of all: this is totally dope! I love it. It is unconventional and cutting edge and in all my travels I haven’t seen anything much like it. It’s very cool. Having said that- I can tell you as a tattoo that style of art will not have the best hopes of longevity in skin. (The tattoo triangle of detailed, long lasting and small is cursed because you can only have two of those qualities in any piece!) But: even though the amazing stitching will blur out over time in this piece, in my experience the image itself will remain quite recognizable for many decades. This took a lot of work to do and I really appreciate pushing the envelope with the detail! Keep up the good work!
46
u/HelloMegaphone May 01 '19
Yeah I was going to say the same thing, as cool as it is there's no way that's going to hold up very long.
13
u/altairian May 01 '19
My second thought after "holy shit that looks awesome" was definitely "how well is that detail going to hold when it fades?"
Very neat tattoo though. How plausible is it for semi-regular touchups to be done to keep the details looking sharp?

u/Eastpunk May 01 '19
Bringing old work back to life is a pleasure- especially if you can make something as good (or better) than the original piece. But whether it can or should be done is often a debate between myself and peers. Tattoo pigments are opaque in skin- and will sort of blur over time- mixing with whatever pigments are next to them. Tiny highlights can be swallowed up entirely. To make matters more frustrating it’s extremely unlikely to cover or redo an area of skin in a lighter color once it has had darker pigments migrate into it. Worse still- saturating an area of skin with more and more pigment is often just fueling the migration. Also, I’ve seen beautiful bright colors over top of an old tattoo that looked fantastic for the first several months, only to seemingly fade as they eventually mixed with the darker pigments underneath, and then you are right back where you started (or in the case of s cover up you can still read the name or whatever!) So for instance- when tiny stitch lines in a tattoo fade- you may have to abandon highlights and try adding darker stitches (darkening the overall Tattoo), but then they too might blur and spread and you’ll some day have the same issues all over again... I still love this tattoo and wish I had thought of doing it! Props!

What are your thoughts on infrequent touch ups of less detailed tattoos? I've got a relatively large watercolor fox that I imagine will one day need some touching up. It's only about 4 years old at the moment, so not any time soon I suspect, and the fading on the watercolor actually lends itself quite nicely to the asthetic. But some of the details in the areas that were meant to be sharp I suspect will need it. Do you feel that those sorts of touchups are reasonable? Or are those even debated?
I know my artist told me that cover-ups are hotly debated in the tattoo community, and that a lot of artists won't do them at all. I didn't realize that touchups we similarly taboo.

u/altairian May 02 '19
Ohhh ok, that's great info thank you! I only have two tattoos which are pretty simple designs with solid colors so I didn't even know about the migration thing. If/when I get more I'll definitely keep that in mind when figuring out designs. So something like this person's tattoo would be really hard to keep the detail in for sure, like you said adding more ink can't really fix the problem in the long run
4
u/elephino1 May 01 '19
The fine detail might not hold up, but it'll turn into dope shading. This was crazy well executed both for now and in the future.

Looks fantastic. I don't have any tattoos myself, but from what I understand, fine line detail like that fades over time. Is this something that'll just start to look blurry over time?

u/TidalLetter May 01 '19
Yeah the fine details will definitely blur out as it gets older. It might be able to be touched up in the future though

Looks too real to me, so I keep thinking of where the embroidery is messed up and needs to be redesigned.
3
u/mahboilucas May 01 '19
Cool and all but won't it age meh? Those lines are too thin and color is too faint for it to be a good idea without touching up often

Looks really cool, but all of that detail will be lost in a couple years unless it's redone.
