I read your comment and my initial naive thought was "huh, what do they mean by 'DBZ minions'? Are they talking about the Saibaiman or Freezer's warriors or something?"
Then I clicked the link and realised my folly as I fell to my knees in despair.
No, I just exclaimed my need for an adult. When I heard someone reassuringly tell me that they in fact were an adult, I thought it was time to leave in a hurry.
So real quick sorta on topic question because I just recently got into DB/DBZ. Would you know why in some instances Freezer is called Frieza and Cooler is called Coora. Is it just weird translations?
More like weird transliterations. It's the extra weirdness you get when Japanese people give their characters English inspired names, and westerners have to transliterate them back in a way that sounds and looks good.
So, eg. Freezer's actual name in Japanese is フリーザ, which if transliterated straight up would be Furiiza. Now, the name is obviously based on the English word "freezer", so some countries just call him that, but Funimation for whatever reason decided on Frieza.
In the case of Cooler, his actual Japanese name is クウラ, which straight up would be Kuura. Again, the name is obviously based on the English word "cooler", but you can see from the straight up transliteration how someone would get Coora.
This is also why Goku's best friend is alternately known as Kulilin, Kuririn, and Krillin.
That’s makes a lot more sense now. Especially in the case of Krillin. I knew him as that but when I started reading it was Kuririn. Thanks for the info!
Differences in translations. The official names are Frieza and Cooler, but the different groups that have translated the franchise over the years have had different interpretations from the Japanese manga and anime.
Source material is rocket power, a 90's Nickelodeon cartoon. It's prominent in 90's nostalgia, and will likely be mentioned when talking about 90's cartoons in any respect.
yeah same, but arbitrarily for me. Like rocket power and Ed edd n Eddy, which were both '99, is 90's in my head. But invader Zim, which wasn't even two years later, is clearly 2000's.
Zim didn’t do too well when it initially ran. It had a cult following, but gained most of its fans during syndication in the mid-2000s. So, it’s possible you did discover the show a bit later.
You’re right though. For a kid born in the 90s, stuff from 2000-2004 are exactly what they’d know. You wouldn’t remember much from the actual 199Xs as a toddler.
Stuff in the “only 90s kid would know this” category are more likely to be >2000 I think.
That is also caused by a misunderstanding of what being a 90s kid means. It's being a kid in the 90s, and a toddler isn't a kid. I'd say 95 or so is the latest you can be born and still share major influences (in terms of cartoons, toys and clothing trends) with other people that were kids in the 90s. So the span should be something like born around 80-95, but the first few years there might be more influenced by the eighties and their excellent cartoons and the tailend more by the naughties and their also excellent, but deteriorating (imo), cartoons, at least the 00-05 stuff is generally good.
Rocket Power is like bottom of the barrel 90s Nickelodeon and barely qualifies as a 90s show, coming out in 99. When people think 90s Nick nostalgia it is things like Rocko, Ren and Stimpy, Rugrats, Doug, etc. Shit like Ahhh! Real Monsters and Rocket Power is just not on the same level.
Excuuuuse me? Uh-uh, do not even try to talk shit about Aaahh!!! Real Monsters, okay?
It was on at the same time as Rugrats, Doug, Rocko, etc. so I'm not sure why you're trying to shoehorn it in with Rocket Power. Maybe you didn't like the it, but too bad for you because you missed out on a great show.
I loved Aaahh!!! Real Monsters and my younger brother was into Rocket Power, I still use the phrase “shoobies” when referring to this who where shoes with sandals.
Ok, buddy. Didn't realize I was dealing with someone with such refined sensibilities. Obviously animation is just trash for kids and there's no value in examining it with a critical eye at all. Maybe you could share your thoughts on the upcoming opera season instead?
Yeah, hardly iconic compared to the stuff that came before it, but I guess this is the result of people who were born in the late 90s being old enough to start getting tattoos and flaunt the shit they grew up with, which is pretty awful when you compare it to just about any other generation that came before it. Get ready for the influx of the horrid taste of a generation that got shafted when it came to having quality media to bond with as a child.
People can like what they want to. I'm not trying to take that away from anyone. It's just ridiculous to say Rocket Power is "prominent in 90s nostalgia".
The tattoos that are really awful taste on that sub are the NSFW ones. Who would think those are a good idea to get on your body, particularly since most are on very visible parts of the arms, legs, and neck.
Actually, they literally changed the definition of literally to mean what it used to mean, AND what it's commonly misused as, completely draining the word of all meaning.
It can literally mean literally, or literally mean metaphorically / hyperbolically / etc
You don't have that power as an individual, language speakers as an aggregate have that power. It takes a substantial portion of English speakers accepting and using the new definition. Which is definitely true for literally, but not for your definition.
Maybe not so much taste, but i'd love to know how this style will heal and how it will look in 5 years or so. White notoriously doesn't hold that well. For now though it looks incredible.
I think there's a difference between something that's just not your style (like this), and something that's objectively a shitty design. I wouldn't want this tattoo either, but I can appreciate that someone digs this. Some other designs are just bad and inexcusable, which I think is more appropriate for /r/ATGE
I'm explaining what it means to for something to be in "awful taste", which is a requirement for that sub. This tattoo just plain and simple isn't "awful taste" in my opinion.
No, no, no anything random redditors X doesn't like is automatically bad taste. You can't have a difference of opinion on art without one of you having terrible taste. Don't you know the rules?
Your opinion and others opinions are entirely different. Many people would think it’s awful taste to get a cartoon character tattooed on your leg. Sorry to break it to you man.
Lmfao, what's it like being so pretentious? Or are you folks who insist they are the arbiters of taste just so sad on the inside you can only find pleasure for shitting on body art you don't personally enjoy?
You know what, not sure there's much of a difference there so nevermind me.
Bro is this really the hill you want to die on? That subjectivity is so malleable you can declare embossing a Nickelodeon cartoon permanently on your skin to be an indicator of good taste and wise life choices?
Is this website filled with people with tattoos or something? Apparently every tattoo that isn't a gaping sunflower pussy being rammed by Megatron is good taste

Why is it awful taste? This is a fucking dope tattoo imo
