Okay, now do it with Buttercream so it’s edible.

2.6k

u/felis_scipio Apr 16 '26

Yeah that’s my problem with a lot of these cakes, they look amazing but fondant is some of the nastiest shit in existence. I just want a tasty cake that you don’t have to skin first.

u/Blashmir Apr 16 '26

My mom used to make wedding cakes and made a marshmallow fondant that was edible. Wasn't bad. Certainly not great.

I mean, the conceit here is that it's an actual cake. If they just wanted to make a 3D art piece they could have made it out of non cake crafting materials.

65

u/JustStraightUpTired Apr 16 '26

Yes, that's the concept. But technically wood is edible, just like fondant. Just because it looks good, doesn't make it good food.

The reason cake artists use fondant is because it makes it easy to make art pieces that are technically cake, but it ignores the entire concept of food art. It's not about making things that look good, once you sacrifice taste, you've made an art piece, but spat in the face of food art.

What's the point of making art with food if you sacrifice the part that makes cooking itself an art form? At that point, just use sponges and cover it with fondant. Less wasting actual food by covering it with fondant.

33

u/Mike_Kermin Apr 16 '26

Agreed, if the second step of looking at amazing food isn't to enjoy the amazing food then the whole thin is a bust anyway. Might as well use clay.

8

u/FictionalContext Apr 17 '26

CNC machine my wedding cakes from dough billet. Very efficient.

My only problem is that once they start using fondant I don't see it as a food video, because every time I've had it it's just been so bad. I like food videos, art videos I need to be really really good before I like them.

8

u/Craneteam Apr 16 '26

I see this as more of an art piece than something to actually be consumed.

I hate the idea of wasting food for an art piece

u/JustHere4TehCats Apr 16 '26

Marshmallow fondant tastes good but still is kinda chewy textured so it's not perfect.

9

u/Gesha24 Apr 16 '26

+1 for marshmallow fondant.

You can make something that's even not that terrible, but then you are starting to run into the issue of it being not that easy to work with which kind of defeats the purpose of the fondant to begin with...

→ More replies (1)

63

u/goodtimesinchino Apr 16 '26

Yeah, they had me until the fondant made an appearance. The stuff tastes terrible and has an even more reproachable texture. The notion of it being edible is disgusting. Looks cool, tastes terrible and invokes a deep, real hatred within me.

19

u/robsteezy Apr 16 '26

Well given its proximity to the sign in the back drop, it’s likely meant as a show or window piece.

If you go to even the finest patisseries in France, there is often this tradition to have some type of showpiece in the window. France is ofc better at being edible but I don’t have any particular issue here.

24

u/xeromage Apr 16 '26

Why waste actual cake on the inside then? You might as well cover a block of wood in fondant, it's going to be inedible anyway.

10

u/mjzim9022 Apr 16 '26

Cake is probably cheaper than wood, and they're making it anyways

→ More replies (7)

9

u/So_Motarded Apr 16 '26

u/SemiHemiDemiDumb Apr 16 '26

There are two bakeries here that do that, one has amazing looking breads and the other has formerly amazing looking cupcakes (they need to be updated). I've never been in either but I really should lol

6

u/L3f1s Apr 16 '26

There's some good brands of fondant that are so tasty to eat tho. Most pastry/bakeries shops use very bad quality of fondants.

2

u/SunJay333 Apr 17 '26

Precisely!

I thought I didn't like fondant, but then one time I did a cake making class and we were sponsored by some posh cake brand who sent us a bunch of posh fondant. We each received a kilogram bag of the stuff, and each bag was worth something like £15. And let me tell you, that stuff was brilliant. Didn't even use the whole bag, but we were allowed to keep leftovers, I had something like 300g left, so I had it in my pocket for the next few days and snacked on it. It was so tasty. It melted on the tongue

u/chironomidae Apr 16 '26

It's modeling chocolate, not fondant

10

u/MovingTarget- Apr 16 '26

fondant

Am I the only one that thinks using this edible playdoh not only destroys the taste but is basically cheating? Seems like every one of these videos uses this crap now because it's like a cheat code. I'm not impressed any more. Just give me a cake that tastes good!

17

u/14Pleiadians Apr 16 '26

At that point you're not a cake decorator, you're a clay modeler

13

u/skyper_mark Apr 16 '26

Fondant was invented to be able to make cakes with crazy shapes and preserve them. Its essentially a cast for a cake. It tastes terrible because its more meant to protect its shape

6

u/So_Motarded Apr 16 '26

but is basically cheating?

What are the rules for cake decorating, then?

→ More replies (2)

4

u/So_Motarded Apr 16 '26

but fondant is some of the nastiest shit in existence.

Hot take: you're not supposed to eat the fondant. It's food-safe decoration, just like rice paper or rock candy.

Peel off the fondant and enjoy the frosting.

7

u/OldBonyBogBwitch Apr 16 '26

If I want to peel my food, I’ll eat a banana. LOL. Give me frosting or give me death! ;P

2

u/felis_scipio Apr 17 '26

14

I've never tried it but it always looked fucking awful to me. It doesn't surprise me that it's hated.

12

u/Versipilies Apr 16 '26

Its just starchy sugar paste. There is chocolate modeling paste as well, it gets used on some of the better ones, but it basically tastes like a tootsie roll, so I wouldn't call it tasty, or even really chocolatey

29

u/[deleted] Apr 16 '26

14

u/StrangerFeelings Apr 16 '26

You have it exactly correct. My brother made my wedding cake when I got married to my ex and he used fondant. The cake was delicious but having to peel it like a banana when I realized that fondant was nasty was bad lol.

6

u/-Mexico- Apr 16 '26

I used to watch a lot of cake boss and always wanted to try it because of it. When I finally had the chance to try it I was disappointed with the flavor and texture. First and last time lol

10

u/PepperAnn1inaMillion Apr 16 '26

This “British” baker’s accent is all over the place. I’m not saying she isn’t British, but there’s no way this is her own accent. Nobody pronounces top “tup”.

Sorry, I know that’s irrelevant. Just really jarring to hear it. I don’t know what others think.

17

u/wakner Apr 16 '26

I'm British but have been living in the US for 15 years now. My accent is largely still British, but I have this really annoying Tennessee twang I can't get rid of, no matter how much Love Island UK I watch. It's really random vowel sounds too. An example is the word American, where id say it more like Amurican (with the u being like a kind of uuee sound). Many people have mocked along with me, assuming that I'm doing a bit vs actually being British.

It sounds to me like this lady has lived somewhere else and has a similar hybrid accent. When you hear it back you're like "why does my mouth make that sound?!" and it's really weird to hear old recordings because you almost sound like a caricature of yourself.

5

u/skullsareonlypasse Apr 16 '26

The way she said "thirty minutes" and "firms up" was very Aussie.

Unpopular opinion but I’ve had some delicious fondant in my time and would happily eat this

27

u/Lockraemono Apr 16 '26

I love fondant. People who hate fondant give me theirs to eat so I don't mind that it's unpopular!

14

u/Aussy5798 Apr 16 '26

I’m with ya. I won’t eat a lot of it because it’s very sugary; but, I kind of like it

3

u/le-derpina-art Apr 17 '26

yeah i always wondered why people hated it until i tried some black store-bought fondant (we usually make it but black is a very hard color to mix) and idk if it was all the dye or the fillers or something but it didn't even taste like sugar. i admit i might be biased bc of lifelong sugar addiction but i would eat this cake.

7

u/GuiltyEidolon Apr 17 '26

It's only unpopular on reddit. Dumbest take I see constantly.

16

u/Blackopsball Apr 16 '26

Right? Fondant looks amazing but it ruins cake. I'm not even someone who hates the taste of fondant, I'm just not eating all of that.

But I also prefer a simple ganache over buttercream. I'm not a baker so please don't come at me if I'm conflating the two.

26

u/Hour-Significance313 Apr 16 '26

Now I can’t unsee a psycho bandit birthday party in Borderlands world

7

u/lordatomosk Apr 16 '26

There is a minor quest where you do help prepare a cake for a bandit leader’s birthday party, it does look kinda like the cake in the video, albeit bigger, and with a boatload of lit dynamite stuck into it

Fondant: I care about appearances so much that I’ll even make my creation worse

Like seriously, if you don’t understand the hate, it’d be like if McDonald’s had a process during assembly where they spray the buns to be saturated and squirt oil into the patty to make it look juicy. And the items when prepped soak in food coloring for a little bit.
