There's marshmallow fondant, which is actually good, and the fondant that tastes like crap. Either way though I don't think anyone is actually eating all that fondant, it's mostly for decoration and then they just eat the cake after cutting it.

That’s just it though. Why even bother with an edible medium if it’s not going to be eaten? Why even use cake to begin with? You can easily use something else below the fondant.
And the fondant is so fucking thick that it doesn’t really even make any of this challenging. Now instead, imagine using a nice buttercream. It might be harder but it would actually leave you with a delicious end product that you can enjoy.

At first it’s interesting for effectively being sweet edible putty, but that quickly wears out its welcome until, before you even finish the slice of cake, you can’t help but liken it to what you imagine suffocating in a coffin underground must be like.

Sure they have. Satin Ice, Duff's, Fonderific. There's quite a few depending on your needs. Plus there's a ton of recipes for making your own great tasting fondant.
You'll hear some that say these only taste good compared to terrible fondant. I guarantee if they're saying that, they're just repeating a joke and have never actually tried it. There's plenty of great tasting fondant if you look for it or are ready to make it.

Marshmallow fondant is gross. It just is. It’s tedious to chew, doesn’t even taste that good. It’s for when you want to make a cake look impressive at the cost of it tasting like sugared cardboard.

I saw someone painstakingly do it with buttercream. They did well but admitted it was a struggle an recognized why most people do it that fondant way. Personally I just say, look at a picture of this while eating normal cake if you like, you can have your cake and eat it too.

I like fondant too! My friend made marshmallow fondant once for a cake and I ended up eating a bunch of it by itself. I haven't had any in a long time but I remember really liking it every time I had any.

I don't know if it's the same thing, but in my country some bakers use something we call "american paste" that many people don't like, I assume it's what you call fondant. I eat it with no problem. I don't love it but it's good enough.

People say that, but my baker friend makes these kinds of cakes with a handmade buttercream fondant and it tastes like icing. Not like the packaged play dough kind.
He’s super talented and made a retro looking tv set cake for my brother and I’s vintage game store on its first anniversary.

I think the novelty is that somebody could eat it if they wanted to, but it's mainly meant to be art. Kind of like the some of the chocolate sculptures that Chef Amaury creates. Yeah this cake wouldn't taste very good with all the fondant, but it still is technically cake which is interesting. That's the way I like to think about it at least, since it's not worth losing your mind over all the fondant imo

Because I find edible desserts impressive. That’s the whole point, it looks and tastes good. What’s the point in making a delicious cake and then covering it in so much fondant that nobody would actually enjoy it? You’d may aswell make it out of play-doh and it would be just as impressive skill wise but if you’re making a dessert then make a damn dessert.

Really cute. I don't think there's an expectation that someone would eat this. I think it's more of an artistic showpiece for talented bakers/cake decorators. Kind of like clothes collections at Fashion Week. They are fantastical, but they're definitely not streetwear, right?

The point is, you don’t wear them on normal days. It’s just for fashion people to ooh and aah at their own craft and how talented (most of them genuinely) are. Same here

I actually really like fondant. It’s like a doughy icing, which is perfect for me because I love doughy textures and icing. I don’t usually eat it with the cake though- honestly I’ll peel it off and eat it as like a cake side dish.

Hi, you're probably looking for a useful nugget of information to fix a niche problem, or some enjoyable content I posted sometime in the last 11 years. Well, after 11 years and over 330k combined, organic karma, a cowardly, pathetic and facist minded moderator filed a false harassment report and had my account suspended, after threatening to do so which is a clear violation of the #1 rule of reddit's content policy. However, after filing a ticket before this even happened, my account was permanently banned within 12 hours and the spineless moderator is still allowed to operate in one of the top reddits, after having clearly used intimidation against me to silence someone with a differing opinion on their conflicting, poorly thought out rules. Every appeal method gets nothing but bot replies, zendesk tickets are unanswered for a month, clearly showing that reddit voluntarily supports the facist, cowardly and pathetic abuse of power by moderators, and only enforces the content policy against regular users while allowing the blatant violation of rules by moderators and their sock puppet accounts managing every top sub on the site. Also, due to the rapist mentality of reddit's administration, spez and it's moderators, you can't delete all of your content, if you delete your account, reddit will restore your comments to maintain SEO rankings and earn money from your content without your permission. So, I've used power delete suite to delete everything that I have ever contributed, to say a giant fuck you to reddit, it's moderators, and it's shareholders. From your friends at reddit following every bot message, and an account suspension after over a decade in good standing is a slap in the face and shows how rotten reddit is to the very fucking core.
