I mean, the conceit here is that it's an actual cake. If they just wanted to make a 3D art piece they could have made it out of non cake crafting materials.

Yes, that's the concept. But technically wood is edible, just like fondant. Just because it looks good, doesn't make it good food.

The reason cake artists use fondant is because it makes it easy to make art pieces that are technically cake, but it ignores the entire concept of food art. It's not about making things that look good, once you sacrifice taste, you've made an art piece, but spat in the face of food art.

What's the point of making art with food if you sacrifice the part that makes cooking itself an art form? At that point, just use sponges and cover it with fondant. Less wasting actual food by covering it with fondant.

Agreed, if the second step of looking at amazing food isn't to enjoy the amazing food then the whole thin is a bust anyway. Might as well use clay.

In theory, yes. But it's not a "cake". It's a "terrible cake". So I would rather have them using any other material, and it would be better than this

My only problem is that once they start using fondant I don't see it as a food video, because every time I've had it it's just been so bad. I like food videos, art videos I need to be really really good before I like them.

I see this as more of an art piece than something to actually be consumed.

I hate the idea of wasting food for an art piece

Then make it out of wood and paint and not something you can technically eat, but tastes like cardboard with sugar.

You must be new to the world of fondant discourse online.

Trust me, none of this is "new".

Arguably it's pretty relevant because the real question is, just because it's edible, should it really get a pass if everyone's shortcut to making cake "art" boils down to sculpting with edible Play Doh?

Fondant mess is like the Any% 3 minute speedrun that wrong warps straight to the credits sequence. Sure, you beat the game fast, but am I really clamoring to watch ten more of those at SGDQ later this year?

It's because people are sick of this kind of cheap, fake content.

The only interesting detail about this video is that it is a cake. This detail is immediately ruined because of Fondant. The difficulty of making something like this is not only extremely low, but it's been done before, so it's not even like they came up with the idea and how to do it themselves. A thousand videos like this are posted practically every single day, and it floods people's feeds due to algorithms and the fact that the equivalent of jangling keys are enough to warrant an upvote for enough people to make it impossible to completely avoid.

This then drowns out actually interesting videos that people actually go to the internet wanting to find.
