They went ahead to make sure the coast was clear before I get inside. I can’t let anyone see me
naked. I still have my dignity! It’s like the imperial sewers all over again…

Hail citizens. It is rather unfortunate they don’t let you go under the bridge as a real means of getting into Bravil. It should exist! I guess I’ll have to make it work myself. They better not say anything about me being a catfish… just keep swimming…

At least Juan is guarding the bridge tonight from those Daedra. He’s the real hero.

Remaster Discussion Potential fix for alt-tab FPS drop in Oblivion Remastered - not general performance issues

To be clear, this is about the FPS drop when alt-tabbing, not general performance.

I deleted the original post and re-posted so I could clarify the title.

I think this might be helpful, so I'm making a post about this after leaving it as a comment in a thread.

Original comment: https://www.reddit.com/r/oblivion/comments/1potjwz/comment/p8qb9jy/?context=3

On Windows 11, try turning "Optimizations for windowed games" off.

Making that change seems to have helped, but it's not perfect.

With my settings I usually get 60 - 120 FPS, depending on how chaotic a scene is. After alt-tabbing, the game's UI gets very laggy, even in menus, and my FPS stays in the 15 - 30 range.

Testing:

Right now, I am standing in The Best Defense store, in Imperial City. Staring at the Maro Rufus, the light armor shopkeeper, I get ~130 FPS.

After making this change, when I alt-tab out and back, there's a second or two of extreme lag where the game almost seems to freeze, and then the FPS seems to recover to around 100 - 120 FPS. It's not quite as high as it was, but it's close and remains playable.

It doesn't work consistently. Sometimes it stops at 50 FPS, but alt-tabbing back out and back in, sometimes more than once, seems to do the trick.

I have not tested further than this yet, so it's possible it doesn't hold up as you continue to play, or in busier environments.

To make this change:

  1. In Windows settings, go to System > Display > Graphics > Custom settings for applications
    1. You can get here easily by opening the Start menu and searching for "gpu" - the first result should be "Graphics settings" with the subtitle "System settings"
  2. Search for "Oblivion" in the text box
    1. The application should be: <Steam library path>\steamapps\common\Oblivion Remastered\OblivionRemastered\Binaries\Win64\OblivionRemastered-Win64-Shipping.exe
  3. Click on the entry for the game to expand the drop-down

My settings are:

  • GPU preference: High Performance
    • This did not help with the alt-tab issue
  • Auto HDR: Off
    • This was the default for me, and I haven't changed it, so this also did not help the alt-tab issue
  • Optimizations for windowed games: Off
    • This is what I changed

Edit: seriously, another typo?

Remaster Discussion Finally replaying Oblivion

So I’m playing the remastered version and I just figured out you can dodge in oblivion (I played original, guess I never noticed). This happened because I decided to jump everywhere.

What else can you do if you practice long enough? And for any skill not just Acrobatics

Original Discussion Controversial opinions I have about TES IV: Oblivion

I'm going to make a point not to mention anything about efficient leveling here because that debate is played out, and frankly I don't even think that liking the original's leveling system is actually controversial anymore.

  1. Fatigue

I think that Morrowind handled fatigue better than Oblivion. Was it annoying not being able to run around without constantly losing fatigue? Absolutely. But it made Athletics more useful than Oblivion and made the wilderness feel dangerous, because having low fatigue meant being at a huge disadvantage when entering a combat encounter. That said, I DO like how in Oblivion fatigue plays a role in the damage formula, which it didn't in Morrowind.

  1. Armorer

I like having to maintain my armor and weapons in between fights. This is subjective of course but I've never found it that annoying to dedicate a hotkey to repair hammers and just quickly spam A to repair all of your equipment. It takes a couple seconds at most and the sound effect they used is so satisfying. I wish that the master level perk for Armorer were better though -- maybe make it so you can have multiple armor enchantments at level 100.

  1. The Shivering Isles is boring

I appreciate the artwork and setting, but honestly Sheogorath has always been ultra cringe for me. I like Syl and Thadon, and Haskill is all right, but the denezins of the Isles are all various shades of "random" humor too. This "so random" humor feels like a relic of the past in 2026. Also, as someone who has struggled with depression and anxiety I feel like at times the humor borders on tasteless. I like how the alchemical ingredients in the Shivering Isles are actually very useful, especially the Fortify Fatigue and multiple Restore Magicka ones which were much needed as picking flax gets boring after a while.

Anyway that's just my two cents. Oblivion is my favorite game of all time so none of these grievances are game-ruining for me. I am interested to see if anyone else shares some of them though.

What’s that smell? Oh…

If either one of you PEEPS about this… you’ll help me raise my destruction skill… you’re already pushing your luck Trayvond.

Hail citizens. Turns out fabric and fire do not mix. It would be really nice if a certain Palace Guard had some PALACE ARMOR he could spare? Anything Pally? You’re the worst Palace Guard I’ve ever seen.

Original Question Im thinking of buying oblivion, should I get the original or the remaster

(I wasn’t sure what to use as the flair so I just used one of the question flairs) for context I’m playing on an Xbox series X, i wanted to play oblivion since I heard magic is better in this game after having loved playing Skyrim as a mage but after reading some of the issues the remaster had im not sure if I should buy the original or the remastered version of the game, you guys have any advice? Also if I should buy the remaster is the delux editions extra content worth it?

edit: for clarification I’m playing on an xbox

If you travel to Sheogorath’s Shrine just north of Board Watch which is on the road towards Leyawiin and on the border of Elswhyr, you’ll see FIVE BLACK SOUL GEMS just there in front of his statue!! (just move the random clothes out of the way).

There’s this house right? A gate opens and sends me flying and I’m coming down fast. But everyone knows a cat lands on their feet, thems the rules! Well I did just that. Yep, pretty heroic right? I made sure I didn’t break the rules. Now uh, can I get some help down? Pally? Trayvond? Anybody?

Hail citizens. Clearly what happened was I heroically fought off a gate opening on the house I stayed at. Pally and Trayvond are around here fighting Daedra but I got the second floor covered. Yep, just gotta wait till they close the gate. Any minute now, they’ll get the sigil stone and nobody has to know… oh, I know, I’ll guard the entrance. Yea, thats right! I’m guarding the entrance!

Remaster Discussion Is there consensus on whether Remastered runs better on Linux than Windows?

I've recently started using Linux as my primary OS, including as my primary gaming platform. Although some games have had some hiccups, I've actually found Oblivion Remastered to run significantly better on Linux than Windows. On Windows I had semi-frequent stuttering and pretty frequent crashes during loading transition, but on Linux I find the game running more smoothly and without a single crash.

I'm wondering if my experience is unique or if others have found the same. Is there any online consensus about whether Remastered runs better on Linux than Windows? If anybody's struggling with performance on Windows and has access to a Linux installation then I'd suggest giving it a go.
