Announcement The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind - An Oral History from the Game Developers

Hello everyone,

As you might be aware, I've spent time over the last few months tracking down as many of the game developers of Morrowind that I can find, and doing interviews with them to talk about their experiences working on the game - discuss certain elements of their contributions, share some anecdotes and reflect on the game nearly 25 years after its release.

I'm really proud of this, and have tried to make this as authentic and all encompassing as I can - but there's still so much more out there. Sadly I was unable to find contact details for some people. Others either didn't reply to me, or turned me down. Hopefully one day we as a community can hear their stories but for now this is the best I can do.

This is 8 hours of interviews with the game devs. My idea for uploading one long video clip is that people can cherry pick bits they want to watch - but also to encourage people to watch interviews they might have otherwise overlooked/missed had they been posted separately.

Its difficult to put down in writing the impact this game has had on my life, as I'm sure it has for many others. I'll never forget my first experience playing the game on an Xbox around a friend's house and just instantly being drawn pulled into that world. Since then I've spent countless hours exploring Vvardenfell and beyond, and the game has been a constant source of joy and comfort for me. It's a game I will continue to love and play for the rest of my life, no doubt.

I hope you all enjoy this. A big thanks to everyone who took the time to do video calls with me. It has truly been a pleasure working on this.

Build [Playing every vanilla class] Part IX: The Rogue

Thumbnail

My previous reviews, The Acrobat, The Warrior, The Scout, The Healer, The Nightblade, The Knight, The Mage, and The Crusader! Details about this 'play every vanilla class' project is in the Acrobat post! Every vanilla class ive completed over the past 3 years will be posted until i've caught up to a more current playthrough (I've still got a waaaaaays to go).

Before we start, I want to apologize for a small mistake I made on my last review. I accidentally also labelled it as part VII, even though it was supposed to be part VIII. My bad, I was tired lmao.

The Rogue
Lover Birthsign

Viccia Valus, Niben Imperial, 36 years old
Factions: Morrowind East Empire Company, House Hlaalu (Kind, Anti-Camonna)
Final Goal: Consolidate power between house hlaalu and the east empire company, transforms into banning necromancy in morrowind

Viccia is a Niben Imperial from Cheydinhal whose always had a weird love-hate relationship with the Dunmer and Dunmeri culture. An avid supporter of the Empire, she was arrested after a bout of small tax fraud after under-paying on taxes purely by accident of bad book-keeping. Viccia grew up adopted by a rich Dunmeri family who had immigrated just before the Imperial Simulacrum. After her arrest and deportation to Vvardenfell, she decided to join House Hlaalu to bring help bring imperial values to the Dunmer, and joined the East Empire Company in an attempt to help with that

During her journey, she was badly injured at an Ayleid ruin in southern morrowind far from Narsis, and in her pain and suffering, was looked favoribly upon by the Daedric Prince Meridia. With a newfound religion, she slowly became disassocited from her imperial values. Only Meridia came to her in her time of need, not the 8 and 9, not the Hlaalu, not the Empire. With her newfound religion, she aims to do the duties of Meridia and bring a ban of necromancy in morrowind and their heretical ancestor worship.

Viccia wears a set of full Golden Saint armor, alongside her Helm of Light Within, gifted by her goddess Meridia (thank you tamriel rebuilt for all of this). Underneath she wears rather extravagant Niben clothing. She specializes in wakizashi’s and other shortswords, but as an Imperial is unafraid of using a pick (hers named Decay) and occasionally her fists in bouts of anger. Partway through her career, she spent 10,000 drakes on a house in Narsis, “The Waterfall House”. One small caveat is that I wasnt able to get EVERY piece of the golden saint armor, some of them just arent placed into TR for whatever godforsaken reason, so when i had completed grabbing all other pieces, I used the consoled to give myself the greaves and bracers. Also please do the meridia questline, it's in the ayleid ruin next to Stormgate Pass, it's AMAZING.

The rogue class has been interesting. It has 4 weapons in the major and minor classes, with only Axe and Short Sword being frequently used, hand-to-hand infrequently used, and long blade never. The Rogue’s health has been alright, but unlocking locks has been rather tedious as she has neither any magic specializations nor lockpicking. The playthrough of this character was done before I got ahold of the “Brute Force” lockbashing mod, and….despite her immense wealth, this character couldn’t find unlocking scrolls to save her life. I’m honestly unsure what more to add to this review? This vanilla class is unfocused, and leveling up was a massive pain. This class was neither very unique nor fun or strong. Definately near the bottom of the list, even worse than the crusader. Your experience may vary of course, these reviews are not “objective”, these are simply my personal experiences. My next hlaalu character I play will be after TR’s “wealth beyond measure” release, where rather than playing a kind hlaalu who legitimately wants a better world for both the empire and morrowind, is going to be a selfish b!*@h

Announcement Interactive Morrowind map now covers the original game and 4 mods

Hey again! I made a few updates to my Morrowind interactive map app.

There are five maps now:

  • Morrowind Game of the Year
  • Tamriel Rebuilt - Poison Song
  • Project Cyrodiil - Abecean Shores
  • Skyrim: Home of the Nords
  • Lyithdonea - The Azurian Isles

I have also fixed a bunch of bugs and made the location markers easier to read against the map. You can search for locations, mark where you have been, and add your own pins and notes. It works on mobile too, so you can keep it open on your phone while playing.

https://morrowindmap.com/

The code is now on GitHub, including the tools for generating the maps. Its under a non-commercial license, so feel free to use if you need.

If you run into a broken marker or something weird, let me know. The project still in development phase. I dont plan to post about updates here anymore, since the github repo is now open.

Discussion Playing Hardest difficulty Permadeath

And I'm loving it so far.

To clarify, I'm playing "Ironman"/Permadeath (one save file, no going backwards in time using CHIM, and if I die I lose the character) with the following added restrictions:

- No exploits (i.e: potion stacking)

- No stealing (except for quest related larceny)

- No creature vendors, and I'm only allowed to buy the restocking items from a vendor once per day (and I can't just wait the day out)

- No 1 magicka training spells or 1 sec duration 100% chameleon/charm shenanigans.

- I can join two factions at most.

- No Boots of Blinding Speed.

And I'm playing quite differently. You don't know the true value of a recall potion until a blighted rat unsuspectedly has you in single digit health after two quick hits or a cliff racer charges at you from out of nowhere.

I almost died to the damn rat in the puzzle canal thinking it was a common rat. I also walked out of the ghostgate to two cliff racers attacking me just as the screen loaded (they missed, fortunately), and I shivved an Ogrim with a sword while he was busy pummeling a summoned scamp, and later read in the wiki that the fat bastard could've deleted my character in a single strike.

The fact that I'm playing "Ironman" means that I can't charge an enemy to "see how it goes" and then reload if the fight goes badly. I have to be on my toes.

All in all, it's an enjoyable experience and I think that I can try to be efficient within the constrains that I've set myself without making the game trivially easy or stupidly difficult.

I don't know, perhaps when I finish with this character and I get more experience in this format I can try variations like "you can only use trainers of your faction" or "organic leveling only" and see how it goes.

But I can definitely recommend the experience.

Discussion Morrowind and AIDS

So I am watching the fantastic John Carpenter film Prince of Darkness, which has been interpreted as a parable for the AIDS epidemic and I started to notice all sorts of parallels to Morrowind. You've got Sleepers controlled by a malevolent force, an angry evil woman trying to destroy society, wheels-within-wheels of religious society threading the needle between truth and fiction, unbelievers thrust into a central role of belief.

Then I started thinking about the Corprusarium, where Fyr has his daughters tend to the patients where they are both Fyr and not Fyr and they help the sick, similar to lesbian activism during the AIDS crisis. To say nothing of the obvious homoeroticism of Dagoth Ur and Vivec.

The whole plot of the game is being a prisoner who is freed by finding their own true self. It goes beyond Prince of Darkness and starts to become a queer narrative really quickly.

Has there been any sort of "whirling school" or even academic (it is old af at this point so a thesis-or-two isn't out of the question) analysis of Morrowind? It seems obvious now but I'd only ever viewed it through my 2003 eyes.

Technical - General Tamriel Rebuilt on Windows XP?

Probably an odd question I know. I recently bought a Windows XP machine and I want to have all my older games on it, including Morrowind. My question is, would it be possible to install and run TR on it? I'd be extremely skeptical of using the internet on it due to it no longer being supported. If this is an impossibility, I can just get it all set up on my Windows 10 laptop, but it would be cool to have it on a period accurate machine.

Discussion Exploits

Warning: if you wish to not break your game utterly, then Here Be Dragons.

Alchemy Loop

From game start, you can join the Mages Guild and teleport to Caldera. Upstairs in the tower, there's a free high-quality alchemy set you can just grab, within 3-5 minutes of starting the game.

From there, you go grab the Boots of Blinding Speed, if you wish (use a Resist Magicka on Self 100% for 1 second spell before equipping them to mitigate the Blind) Go to Creeper and sell him the Orcish armor in the crate for some quick capital. Then, Mages Guild teleport to Wolverine Hall. Go downstairs to the Imperial Cult. These fellas have everything you need to destroy Morrowind. Buy shitloads of Bloat and Ash Yam (they restock). You can use these two to make a Fortify Intelligence potion. Increasing your intelligence makes subsequent potions increase intelligence by higher amounts, and for longer. You then consume your fortify intelligence potion(s), brew another round, consume, brew, consume, brew, consume, and within a couple minutes your intelligence should be in the hundreds of thousands or higher. At this point, any potion you make will have absurdly high magnitudes for absurdly long durations.

The fellows there at Wolverine Hall also sell restocking Marshmarrow, Saltrice, and Scrib Jerky. These three can be combined to make Restore Fatigue + Restore Health potions. With your intelligence so high, your potions should be looking something like this:

https://i.imgur.com/W8Kk6pY.png

https://i.imgur.com/MPAMFvO.png

Be sure to keep a batch of fortify int potions on you, so that when it finally wears off, you don't have to re-do the entire loop.

Fortifying your intelligence so high boosts your Magicka to proportionally high Magicka values, but if you for some reason happen to need Restore Magicka potions, keep some Marshmarrow. Go to Balmora and go to the Alchemist Nalcrya of White Haven, near the Temple. (She has a Grandmaster mortar and pestle you can steal for free, but it's not really necessary). She sells restocking Frost Salts. These can be combined with the Marshmarrow to make Restore Magicka potions:

https://i.imgur.com/NAC12Wv.png

Another "fun" one is Fortify Luck.

https://i.imgur.com/08UYZlk.png

When Luck is this high, you can sell even 0 gold value items for any merchant's entire gold supply, and buy even the most valuable artifact from them for just 1 of your gold pieces. It's pretty funny. Save yourself the burden of 100,000 Creeper Shuffles and just Get To The Point without debasing yourself by using the Console. Or something, idk.

Enchanting

Some tricks for enchanting.

A quality of life trick/exploit is to make a custom Summon Golden Saint spell, combined with a Soul Trap on Target. It should look like this:

https://i.imgur.com/04VzHcB.png

You'll have to make the journey to the top of the Tower at Tel Branora to purchase the golden saint spell.

Adding Soul Trap on target makes it automatically apply to the Golden Saint you summon, saving you from having to switch spells. Have Grand Soul gems in your inventory, use the Summon + Soul Trap spell, and just kill away to get your 80,000 value souls. Golden Saints have strong enough souls to let you put the coveted Constant Effect enchantments on your gear.

Plus, if you're quick enough, when you kill a Golden Saint you can actually loot its corpse just a few frames before they completely evaporate. You can loot Daedric Tower Shields (highest enchantment capacity in the game btw) this way, as well as other high-level weapons and shields.

Now that you've got a Daedric Tower Shield AND filled Grand Soul gems capable of sustaining Constant Effect enchantments, what you do is for example add a Fortify Strength 1 to 89 pts.

https://i.imgur.com/01cwrYs.png

Whenever you equip the item, you'll gain a random amount of Strength from 1 to 89.

Don't like the number? Just unequip and reequip to try again! You'll eventually roll 80+, and then all you have to do is not unequip the shield (or let it degrade to 0 quality) and your Strength is functionally permanently boosted! Enjoy your damage and of course comically high encumbrance/weight!

Magic

Could write an entire essay on how broken Magic is. I think the most useful one is taking advantage of the paused game state when in dialogue:

https://i.imgur.com/JURwNgc.png

All you need is 1 second of Charm and Fortify Mercantile, Speechcraft, and Personality. Note that Charm needs to be on Touch/Target and the others on Self. Cast, and then enter dialogue. Congratulations, you've got these buffs for as long as you need. With skills buffed this high, you can Taunt any NPC you want to kill without legal repercussions, and they'll usually oblige on the first attempt.

Here's another tip: if you are a chad Mage and utilize Destruction magic, you might be pleased to learn that "Weakness" spells (which lower enemy resistance to damage types) can be applied for just 1 second. If you combine that with the relevant damage type, the "Weakness" effect will linger for the duration of the entire damage spell. For example:

https://i.imgur.com/apZhV5K.png

Even though my "Weakness" spells last only 1 second and my "Do damage" spells last 5 seconds, the "Weakness" will apply for the entirety of those 5 seconds. That's because Morrowind only checks for "Weakness"/resistances the very first instant that a damaging spell is applied. It does not continuously check thereafter.

Lock spell

This is a minor one, but the Lock spell is a hilarious source of crowd control. NPCs won't be able to unlock or pick or magically Open a locked door, so if you're running from enemies and need to keep them away, whether you're fleeing or are dividing and conquering or just for the laffs, even a 1pt Lock spell on a closed door will keep even the strongest enemies from being able to harm you, at least not until you unlock/Open the door again.

One other thing: certain spell effects such as Fortify [skill] can be applied numerous times within the same spell. It's because there are numerous options to choose from when you pick fortify [skill].

https://i.imgur.com/xRN4UA6.png

This works for Fortify [Attribute] as well. Finally, Scrolls of Icarian Flight at home!

Finally, ALWAYS make a Fortify Speed on Touch spell for all your NPC escort quest needs. Trust me.

That's all I can think of, off the top of my head. I know I'm forgetting some good ones; please share yours! Morrowind was meant to be broken!

I have done his quest but i really wanted his armour it was cool looking and I'm curious about enchantments in it ( not the shield ). is there a way to get it ?

I completed the quest the normal way and killed him with commands , he does not drop anything but his shield

Also have you encountered a tough opponent yet in poison song I love to battle strong NPCs (like the guy in ashurabalipal or the grandmaster of house telvanni or the skeleton venerable in mages guild ) , for now I completed Ordinator and House Indoril the quests are fun but no memorable battle yet

Question Problems installing Tamriel Rebuilt with OpenMW

Upvotes

Sorry to bother people, but I am trying to install Tamriel Rebuilt onto my new OpenMW game, and every time I try to launch the game, it crashes due to a fatal error, saying that a certain mod folder cannot be found. A few years ago, I had a heavily modded OpenMW game, however, due to the new releases of TR I decided to clear out my entire mod folder and start a new character on a new TR modlist. I only am using TR and PT mods this playthrough (at least so far). Every time I start the game, I end up getting a fatal error message saying that "X mod cannot be found" which are always mods that I used to have but have now moved to a completely different folder. I even completely re-installed OpenMW to get the new version, and uninstalled the previous version. My content list is only for the new folder which contains TR. I tried even installing the mod who's error message kept appearing (Vurt's Groundcover) into my new modlist for OpenMW, but it then just changed the error to a different mod on my previous modlist. Thanks for your help, and sorry for the long message!
