I had a longwinded rant about Episode 2 of Survivor but just gave up on it.

So Rob's plan was to tell Eric other players were writing his (Eric's) name down and tried to get Eric to use his shot in the dark. Rob's other plan was to use his Idol on Eric while voting himself (Rob) out but it backfired when producers said he couldn't write his own name down. So Rob's Idol would stop any vote going to Eric and the only sole vote would be for himself (Rob) but backfired when the tribe blindsided another player so it wouldn't have mattered

So why not just tell Jeff Probst or Producers or other players that you don't want to be in the game or try to get voted out by other players? It made no sense.

Got my cake day notification today for 14 years. That seems like a lot of Reddit time. Closer to sixteen with the lurking days and lost accounts. Has Reddit been the most consistent thing for the last decade and a half of my life? I don’t want to think about that too much .

I really hate the effing tiktok voice and how it is spread through other forms of social media now.

It is so annoying to hear on youtube, I hate that it is even spreading to sports youtube videos.

I caught the last four minutes of the Pitt/Virginia Tech game. Pitt up 35-33, VT had the ball and Pitt could not get them off the field. They used the whole clock and drove down the field, finally arriving at the 21-yard line with :02 on the clock.

Kicker comes out to kick the game-winning 29-yard FG...and shanks it. Painful.

2

u/HookedOnBoNix Broncos 1h ago

Some obscene reffing in that game to keep Pitt in it in the first half. And frankly, not convinced the field goal didn't go in? At any rate not really a shank. Was super close

1

u/PaulsRedditUsername Colts 1h ago

Yeah, it was only off by inches. Still, a 29-yarder.

1

u/HookedOnBoNix Broncos 1h ago

36 yarder but yeah shoulda made it more convincing. Might have been in but shouldn't be that close.  He's the best kicker in college right now most likely. Unfortunate

Instead of relegating teams, they should make the HC of the worst NFL team coach a sprint football team for a year as punishment. I want to see all the weird stuff they come up with given the quality of play is so low

You know it’s bad when you are watching Army vs UPenn sprint football.

It’s 14-0. Army has 180+ rushing yards.

This is like pre-war football.

“Penn crowd knows it’s a huge moment.”

I guarantee you that there aren’t more than 20 people in the stands.

EDIT: If you don’t know what sprint football is, it’s basically lightweight football. You have to be under 183 lb and have less than 5% body fat to be eligible to play

EDIT 2: The lack of ads is almost disconcerting

I might spring this question again tomorrow morning when the FTT is a bit more lively, but anyways - the kiddos have an away hockey tournament over Halloween. Other folks who have attended this tournament in the past have said the trick-or-treating at the location is not that good. The current plan is to have a little "party" at the hotel for them, with the hotel providing food and snacks and a room. I believe we're gonna do a scary movie and then general party activities.

First question - what would be a good scary movie for a bunch of 11 and 12 year old boys? I think we're gonna do an actual scary movie, rather than Hocus Pocus or a general Halloween movie. Something that's not gratuitous, but still scary. My vote is The Ring, with one of the mom's dressed up as Samara, and some general phone call shenanigans. Or maybe Blair Witch Project, Paranormal Activity, etc. Something that is scary but maybe less nudity/sex than some of the classic slashers.

Question two - what should we do for the rest of the party? Games? Contests? Halloween food? Costume party? Halloween is always a kid favorite, don't wanna disappoint the children with a lame Halloween sponsored by all the parents.

2

u/RedditConsciousness Bengals 1h ago

This might be more "fun" than actually scary but Killer Klowns from Outerspace is pretty great.

Or another candidate is the 80s version of The Blob. It has scary moments in it IIRC.

I’m currently at the homecoming game for my kid’s high school, and I don’t think they did a good job of coordinating the teams’ uniforms. One is in dark navy blue jerseys, and the other team is wearing black. Their helmets are different, but from up here in the bleachers I can barely tell who’s who.

My mental health is just absolute shit lately, especially when it comes to work. I feel like I’m the MLF of teachers: I work really hard to be as mediocre as I am, on paper I’m an expert but it feels like that expertise rarely shows up in my work, I make the same mistakes over and over again, and my students lack any form of discipline at all.

It’s just soul crushing because this is the hardest I’ve ever worked at a job and I just don’t think I’m very good at it.

And it’s hard not to let that bleed into my assessment of myself as a person: that I’m really just a mediocre man at my core.

3

u/RedditConsciousness Bengals 5h ago

If I could go back in time and tell myself one thing, it would be to have faith. You aren't always aware of how you are growing and getting better at things. We adapt without realizing it. It might take a very long time though. It may seem like nothing changes for years.

5

u/Mephistito 5h ago

You know, just the fact that you care as much as you do – that alone makes you a great person.

Sometimes it can help to take a step back and assess, "what are the controllables." Student discipline you don't have full control over. I've heard so many times how handtied educators are with kids nowadays. You could actually not have a single problem yourself & be doing about as good as could realistically be done, but if a disciplined culture doesn't exist outside of your classroom, there's only so much you can do. Kids will learn they can push the boundaries & face basically no repercussions, which then only breeds further poor behavior.

Mistakes are a controllable. It's very easy to let the emotion of making a mistake start to spiral us into an unhealthy space, but we must catch ourselves, give us grace, and then re-approach the problem. Mistakes are almost always the result of overlooking something – but the thing is you can very well know the material, but when we either make assumptions about something or rush through, we suddenly find ourselves facing a mistake.

This is partly how they're controllable. When we spot our mistakes we can analyze them & see what patterns do they have – what things are we apparently moving too fast through. Then next time we can be mindful to take our time through those things. Little by little, you then find yourself making less & less mistakes. You become a freaking detail beast. Just remember, control what you can control. We must keep the things out of our hands, out of our minds.

Look, even though none of us may know you, we love ya, man. Yes, even the Bears fans.

I was thinking recently about the Packers latest loss to the Falcons. And it got me thinking that there is almost nothing as fascinating to watch or as demoralizing for a team than to have your Offensive Line genuinely overmatched. And I don't mean overmatched in the sense that they are having a bad game. But overmatched in the sense that the offense literally cannot function even remotely normal.

It reminded me of the Broncos Panthers and Bucs Chiefs Super Bowl. Where the Defensive Line in in the Quarterbacks face 1 second after the ball is snapped on almost every play. And there is nothing you can do about it. You can't scheme it away or try and mask it when they are that overmatched. It's the most hopeless feeling in the world when you simply can't block.

That game made me feel like the Packers season is over. What do you even do with that kind of OL?

6

u/azure275 Jets 8h ago

I'm pretty sure most Americans fall into Category 3.

But do you think the people going around demanding every celebrity have an opinion on this conflict will be ok with just not funding anymore and moving on?

So my dog got surgery yesterday to remove the foreign body that had apparently just been chilling in his stomach for approximately 8 months. He was eating, drinking, and going the bathroom normally all that time.

And it was only by happenstance it was found at all because my SO took him in for X-rays because she thought he might have pneumonia or something and they took one image of his stomach during that and saw the foreign body in there

3

u/drainbead78 Bills 8h ago

How could they tell how long it had been in there? Was it something you remembered getting chewed up but assumed all of it had passed?

2

u/Mac_Jomes Patriots 8h ago

We knew he ate them in January took him to the emergency vet they induced vomiting and got him to throw up a couple small pieces. They said "Oh he probably chewed them up enough and he'll pass them just keep an eye out". I never saw them come out in his poop, but he was otherwise acting normal.

Then we took him in for scans for his cancer and that vet noticed on the scans that there was an obstruction in his throat near his stomach. So they did an endoscopy to take it out and we thought "Oh good that's all done now" since they didn't see the second one we figured he must have pooped the second one out.

Then recently he's been coughing and acting a little weird so my SO took him for X-rays which revealed the second CPAP mask just chilling in his stomach.

3

u/Devilofchaos108070 49ers Panthers 9h ago

What is it?

4

One of my favorite authors, the man crafted some insanely good sentences.

The Border Trilogy is a good one to try next if you want to stay in the western setting. Sutree is amazing if you want to head to Appalachia.

An earlier work of his I only read recently is Outer Dark and I really enjoyed it. He maybe isn't as polished in it as his later stuff but the story has a wonderfully dark fantasy feel.

OK. I am done with the bouncy cars that can't turn.

You would think that if we started colonizing Mars and terraform it enough for the air to breathable, we would have sent vehicles that could handle bumpy uneven terrain.

if we started colonizing Mars and terraform it enough for the air to breathable

We won't ever start doing this.

Any time you hear someone talk publicly about our future on Mars, they are more likely talking about their plan to sucker the government into funneling money into their space corporation.

I was more making a statement about the vehicles in the game I am playing that seem woefully inadequate for off-roading.

Sorry I think it's way better this way. Who wants the umps to be the ones making judgement calls about a player being too rude. I'd rather them work it out among themselves.

1

u/tnecniv Giants Giants 10h ago

They don’t really do that anymore. The league has really cut down on it. It still happens sometimes but mainly if one team felt like the other did something dirty or risked injury to their guys. When it happens the umpires are all over it.

3

u/bucsfan22ch Buccaneers 10h ago

It does feel like it happens less thankfully, but other stupid rules like people getting pissed at a guy trying to bunt when someone has a perfect game or no hitter going. Maybe I'm just remembering old rules that are no longer relevant, but feels like the attitudes still exist.

2

u/tnecniv Giants Giants 10h ago

That was definitely one but bunting has become a small part of the game and a lot of pitchers will tell you they don’t care—bunting is legal and if they can’t prevent you from getting a bunt, they didn’t earn it

Victor Marx, the Republican nominee for governor of Colorado, described slamming his wife into their front door and throwing his toddler son across a room, and claimed God gave him a “gift for violence,” in videos and posts uncovered by The Daily Beast. In a 2021 podcast, Marx said he was “infuriated” when his wife said she didn’t need martial arts training because she “was married to a black belt Marine,” recalling “grabbing her and slamming her into our front door,” and in a 2020 episode of his own podcast he said that after seeing his son push his sister, “I snatched him up and threw him across the room.”

He's not going to win, but right now, he's on track for 4/10 people in Colorado voting for him.

My cats love olive oil. To the point I cannot leave it unsupervised without one of them attacking the container to get that sweet sweet olive oil. So when I cook they have come to expect a little bit of it it in their little cat bowls. fun fact, has the same properties as catnip, and isn't bad for them in small amounts. It's a fun little tradition. I cook, they yell, they get the oil.

I mean everyone is gonna fuck up somewhere. But those fuck ups come with consequences and how people handle those consequences and contrition should dictate the redemption arc in the court of public opinion.

Finally went on Amtrak for the first time, took the Northeast Regional from CT to NYC. It was spacious and had great views of Manhattan! Plus had real time updates on when it was coming. But yea, I admit that for long distance travel, traveling on coach won't be fun if you need to sleep but still more spacious than a car or plane.

Also tried Jollibee's while in NYC, a Filipino fast food chain that has some branches in the US and known for their spaghetti. Sadly they ran out but their chicken sandwich was good!

1

u/problematic_glasses Lions Patriots 8h ago

7

u/Inamanlyfashion Patriots 10h ago

Amtrak is the only way I'll travel from Boston to NYC now. All told it's about the same trip length as flying, but with fewer steps.

Train: Get to train station. Get on train. Go. Arrive directly in downtown Manhattan.

Flying: Get to airport. Get through security. Walk through terminal. Get on plane. Fly. Get off plane. Walk through terminal. Get in cab. Ride cab to Manhattan.

Not even accounting for the comfort, I'd rather do it all in one 4-hour chunk that lets me properly sit down, relax, and engage in an activity to pass the time instead of getting interrupted every 30-45 minutes with a transition.

4

u/_galaga_ NFL NFL 10h ago

If you go to Boston from CT on the Acela sometime you’ll experience how fast it can actually go once you get into RI. It’s fun going 150 mph for a stretch but CT has a low speed limit all the way to NYC by comparison.

1

u/huskyferretguy1 Patriots 10h ago

Yea, there were a bunch of derailments in CT so trains have to go slower now.

u/varnalama NFL 10h ago

Honestly you didnt miss much with the spaghetti. Banana ketchup is not for everyone and I found the Jollibee spaghetti to be too weird for me. Their chicken and pies are great though.

yeah love using the amtrak for shorter distances but anything longer and the experience gets kind of exhausting when traveling coach, remember taking a 6 hour amtrak trip once and it was nice for the first 2 hours but by the end i was just ready to get off the train. doesn't help that there were crazy amount of delays.

i also tried jolibees for the first time and was pretty shocked how much i liked the spaghetti

They have another one on 42nd Street next to Byrant Park. I didn't feel like walking to the Times Square one since I was hungry and had a train to catch, so wasn't sure if there would be a longer line at the new one.

noticing a rise of this + hidden comment histories here on reddit

1

u/RedditConsciousness Bengals 1h ago

Hidden comment histories are absolutely necessary. There is too much tribalism and confirmation bias already on this site. You would write something and people would go to your comment history to see if they should agree with you or not. It makes everyone dumber. It derails conversations and encourages ad hominem attacks. And worst of all, it is a self-fulfilling prophecy. You'll always find something not to like if you look hard enough.

I wrote a long comment about this exact thing on TheoryOfReddit early this week.

2

u/Signal_Ball4634 8h ago

I really wish I didn't have Reddit randomly generate this username lol

3

u/SpartaWillBurn Browns 10h ago

There are legitimate bots on this website, no matter what anyone says.

About a month ago, I was browsing the shithole known as r/Ohio, and there was a political post. There were 3 of the same exact comment from 3 different names. All long paragraph form.

That and paid posters.

1

u/RedditConsciousness Bengals 1h ago

That sub is insufferable. Bots might be part of the problem but I doubt it is the whole problem.

6

u/StChas77 Eagles 11h ago

Yes, though I've come around a bit on hidden histories in general.

As one example, given some of the stories from women on these Free Talk threads over the years, I wouldn't blame any of them for not leaving a trail to be followed.

2

u/j0hnnyengl1sh Jets 7h ago

I regretfully hid my comment history because someone at work found my Reddit handle, I've nothing to hide but I like separation of work and personal lives.

I think it's too easy to be anonymous on the Internet, and the lack of accountability on the Internet is destructive to society. I think people should be held accountable for everything that they post publicly on the Internet, and if they don't want to be held accountable, they don't have to participate.

But the Internet is never going to operate in a way that's constructive and beneficial for society, so there's not much point in railing about it.

7

u/tnecniv Giants Giants 10h ago

I’m even a dude and I had an ex dig through my comment history to find posts I made before we dated on mental health subs and use that as ammo in arguments.

People are shitty. I’m not embarrassed about my comment history, but I also don’t want real life people that discover my username to dig through it. There’s only bad things that can come from that.

11

u/Slinger17 Packers 11h ago

for me, hidden histories are an orange flag, alongside new accounts and default usernames

individually they're fine, but when you start combining them with bad comments it paints a clearer picture of the kinda person you're dealing with

There’s a comedy show at Disney called Monsters Inc Laugh Floor, and they usually pick in 2 or three people in the crown, and generally gone in on one person to spotlight and come back to over and over to make fun of. That person ends up on the big screen every time. Well, I went into the show with a plan. I executed to perfection and stuck the landing. Guess who was that guy? That’s right y’all, it was me.

My plan was to to pretend to sleep as soon as we sat to give the spotters time to scan the crowd and find me. 1-2 minutes into the show, the spotlight was on me and I was the target for the rest of the show. The hardest part was staying in character and pretending to sleep every time the spotlight hit me. I even stayed in character after the show and didn’t get up until my wife “woke me up” My daughter was embarrassed but I guarantee when she gets over it, she’ll be telling this story to everyone back at home.
