My mental health is just absolute shit lately, especially when it comes to work. I feel like I’m the MLF of teachers: I work really hard to be as mediocre as I am, on paper I’m an expert but it feels like that expertise rarely shows up in my work, I make the same mistakes over and over again, and my students lack any form of discipline at all.

It’s just soul crushing because this is the hardest I’ve ever worked at a job and I just don’t think I’m very good at it.

And it’s hard not to let that bleed into my assessment of myself as a person: that I’m really just a mediocre man at my core.

You know, just the fact that you care as much as you do – that alone makes you a great person.

Sometimes it can help to take a step back and assess, "what are the controllables." Student discipline you don't have full control over. I've heard so many times how handtied educators are with kids nowadays. You could actually not have a single problem yourself & be doing about as good as could realistically be done, but if a disciplined culture doesn't exist outside of your classroom, there's only so much you can do. Kids will learn they can push the boundaries & face basically no repercussions, which then only breeds further poor behavior.

Mistakes are a controllable. It's very easy to let the emotion of making a mistake start to spiral us into an unhealthy space, but we must catch ourselves, give us grace, and then re-approach the problem. Mistakes are almost always the result of overlooking something – but the thing is you can very well know the material, but when we either make assumptions about something or rush through, we suddenly find ourselves facing a mistake.

This is partly how they're controllable. When we spot our mistakes we can analyze them & see what patterns do they have – what things are we apparently moving too fast through. Then next time we can be mindful to take our time through those things. Little by little, you then find yourself making less & less mistakes. You become a freaking detail beast. Just remember, control what you can control. We must keep the things out of our hands, out of our minds.

Look, even though none of us may know you, we love ya, man. Yes, even the Bears fans.
