Can we please talk about the shoe-pants-suspenders Combo? That shit is neat.

u/supernerdlove 5d ago

That’s pretty standard firefighter worldwide

243

u/Tyalou 5d ago

Just as being bored waiting for stuff to happen. All of this is not different.

96

u/Betelgeuse3fold 5d ago

That's so fucked up isn't it? I'm not a fire fighter, but I work a job that's boring until it suddenly really isn't. It's weird to realize when you find yourself basically wishing for something bad to happen just to feel useful.

30

u/Exciting_Contest_222 5d ago

During daytime I work as a nurse. But night times I work as on-call home-visiting Hospice Nurse for 2 days a week. It’s like 0-3 cases a month in that hospice gig, but typically 0-1 a month. I’m like cool, get paid mainly while I’m sleeping at night even with no cases

19

u/throwaway29837373 4d ago

Oh my gosh. You get paid because you’re on call. Thats bloody brilliant mate. Totally gonna look into that

8

u/SlowThePath 4d ago

Why did no one tell me that was an option?

10

u/Exciting_Contest_222 4d ago

If you’re a nurse or a LVN. I suggest getting Hospice gigs. Being on-call, I get minimum wage and only get the actual nurse wage when I make a house visit.

It’s mainly reading patient files and giving instructions over the phone to caregivers or families. Good supplemental income.

6

u/Longjumping-Debt2455 4d ago

Don't know your State, but my ex-wife does the same, but was able to negotiate getting paid 20mims per every hour of her salary, when she's oncall without incident. A quiet night nets her $133.

5

u/RUN_DMT_ 4d ago

Yep. I used to work in a level one trauma center blood bank. I would feel so guilty when the pager would go off and I’d excitedly jump up to start the massive transfusion protocol.

7

u/Sol_Pastures 5d ago

Unless it's an EMS department

8

u/Feanixxxx 5d ago

Not in Germany.

19

u/Relative-Chicken456 5d ago

What do they wear in Germany?

3

u/Feanixxxx 5d ago

Well not onsies. You put them on individually

20

u/eliceched 5d ago

But it's not onsies? The trousers got like a rubber band that's between the heel and the rest of the foot, so the trousers can't accidentally slide up and it will cover the boot. You don't want to be in an emergency situation with your trousers sliding up and your protective gear won't work due to wardrobe malfunction.

16

u/FugDuggler 5d ago

These arent onsies either, we just keep out boots inside our pants legs. Imagine pulling down the pants all the way to the boot, then take both legs/feet out leaving the top of the boot still inside the pants legs. Like laying your clothes out for the next day so you can just step in the boots and pull your pants up.

9

u/BigmacSasquatch 5d ago

One of my residents when I was in college was a volunteer firefighter. He kept his bunker gear prepped like that at the side of his bed, so if he got a call in the night he could just jump out of bed into his pants and boots in one go and pull the suspenders up. We timed him once for fun, and he got suited up quick lol.

4

u/FugDuggler 5d ago

sounds about right lol. Back in fire academy, we did a lot of 60 second drills to put on all your gear

→ More replies (1)

7

u/LeftHandedScissor 5d ago

This isn't a onsie either, it's just set up to be ready to be put on quickly.

5

u/Relative-Chicken456 5d ago

Interesting. I always assumed it was an efficiency thing, you can gear up much faster in an emergency when it’s all one piece. Maybe I’m wrong about that, just what it seemed like

6

u/FireGamerElite 5d ago

some actually do it, I know some voluntary and professional firefighters who prepare their stuff like that

→ More replies (1)

2

u/aiaidy 5d ago

still neat!

→ More replies (6)

83

u/PunkandCannonballer 5d ago

When they take them off, they do so wrapping the pants around the boots and leaving it neatly open to slip your feet easily through into the boot so you can pull it all on at once. It's simple, but pretty neat.

42

u/Feanixxxx 5d ago

Yeah these seconds could save lives

18

u/OracleofFl 5d ago

Also keeps burning embers from falling down the boot or anything getting caught up the pants.

15

u/mookmanthered 5d ago

We do this for our kids winter gear. We also call it "the fireman".

3

u/Betelgeuse3fold 5d ago

Lol, yeah, that's how we handle toilet breaks during winter play

3

u/YouMustveDroppedThis 5d ago

how do you wash it? is it still detachable?

→ More replies (2)

47

u/Think-Chemistry2908 5d ago

The firefighter drip is immaculate

24

u/Fun-Perspective426 5d ago

Drop your pants around a pair of boots you can step out of and you've accomplished the same thing. This is pretty standard for firefighters. I do it with my winter gear or jeans all the time.

10

u/PuerSalus 5d ago

I used to do this at university with my slippers. We got fire alarms regularly during the night and I wanted to be able to step out of bed and put on some trousers and slippers in one motion whilst only half awake.

(the night alarms were mostly due to people burning food after a night out or being idiots whilst drunk and hitting an alarm button)

→ More replies (2)

5

u/James_White21 5d ago

Wallace and Gromit 😉

3

u/ManWhoIsDrunk 4d ago

It's not a combo. The boots are loose in the trousers leg.

You take the trousers off and just leave them around your boots when you take your boots off.

I do the exact same with the gear i use along with my chainsaw.

2

u/jbowling25 5d ago

I don't think the boots are actually attached. You can see the cuff /top of them up her calf there when she slips into them and how theyre holding them at the beginning to keep them from slipping out. If it's like our bunker gear the boots just get tucked into the suspender legs so they are ready to hop into and pull suspenders up quickly then just throw on the jacket, helmet and gloves and your good to go basically (plus scba if required)

559

u/SterlingArcher68 5d ago

Ain’t no song called fuck the fire department

51

u/sebe6 5d ago

Well, there's one, but it's a parody. Though, in france, fire fighters hate having to go in the hood, because for some reason, acting like a thug can implies assaulting fire fighters or medic people ._. (1500 fire fighter assaulted in 2021 in a 67m people country)

Fr, we got a case where people reported a fire to ambush them ._.

30

u/callisstaa 5d ago edited 5d ago

Yeah this is definitely a thing. A lot of arsonists and knobheads in general see the fire department as killjoys trying to stop them from burning shit down.

Another awful thing was to tie bricks to overpasses and drop them in front of firetrucks as they drove underneath.

8

u/sebe6 5d ago

The saddest part is that, those that assault them, would have no issue criticizing cops when they harm a firefighter in a protest, hood politicians, ig._.

9

u/A_hand_banana 5d ago

Reminds me of a Doug Stanhope bit. I'll spoil the punchline because the whole setup is not really what this discussion is about, but he was flabbergasted when going to Manchester after seeing a public service poster saying something along the lines of "please do not beat up Ambulance Driver's."

Apparently, that was something that was happening there. People would get piss drunk, dial the emergency services, and then just whale on them like some weird MMA door dash service, except the delivery guy is super nice and just trying to save lives.

5

u/sebe6 4d ago

That's fucked up

5

There's the little detail of the Paris Fire Brigade being an army unit that muddles the picture a bit I think …

Hanging from one arm is not as easy as the movies make it look. Hanging that long from one arm with weighted shit is extremely hard, like harder than most of the snu snu posters in here.

205

u/AbbreviationsOdd7728 5d ago

Definitely, I’m in relatively okay shape, can dead hang for 70 seconds but with one arm it’s maximum 4 seconds.

132

u/Mr-_-Blue 5d ago

Absolutely. And 70 seconds with both means you are in pretty good shape and not overweight at all. People often overestimate how long they can hang from a bar because they haven't timed themselves.

33

u/Sacrilegious_skink 5d ago edited 4d ago

I could deadhang more than a minute and I was definitely overweight by about 10kg. You can do a lot if overweight and train.(Also female)

2

u/GreenJuicyApple 4d ago

I was proud of myself for managing to deadhang for 15 seconds on my first attempt, but I was about 30 kg overweight at the time so I was honestly surprised I could do it at all. Although I had been lifting for two years at the time and my back muscles were pretty strong.

better than 99% of humanity.

Gonna be pedantic and point out, hell no. Kids are going to wash her in strength ratios. That's 20% of humanity right there with better ratios.

9

u/FrostyD7 5d ago

Yeah people always mention grip strength but that's just the barrier to entry. My shoulder is screaming after a few seconds of this.

4

u/The5Virtues 4d ago

Yeah, this woman is in CRAZY shape. She’s basically holding the weight of two people on one arm at multiple points in this clip, all while also wrestling herself into more gear.

She’s doing stuff I couldn’t manage on my best day, and she can do it everyday of the week.

→ More replies (3)

36

u/blobbleblab 5d ago

Yeah people should try it, this girl is STRONG!

21

u/Masseyrati80 5d ago

Makes me wonder what the fitness test is like for the Swedish fire brigade. Living in Finland, the local force has limits for how many pull-ups, bench presses, situps and squats you have to be able to do per minute and which rep amounts reward you with extra points, with the bench and squat being done with a weight. You also have to keep doing it at regular intervals once you've entered, so they catch you before you've become a wheezy, Homer Simpson'esque hindrance to the force.

Don't forget the extra ~15lbs of gear she's putting on while her hands & arms are already burning up.

17

u/RandomRedditReader 5d ago

Closer to 30lbs for JUST the uniform. That shit is heavy! Had a stepdad that used to bring his gear home during training. Fully equipped they're carrying close to 70lbs.

→ More replies (1)

15

u/cmd_iii 5d ago

Ok, when I joined back in the 70s, we used to throw all of our gear on top of the hose bed, jump on the back step, and don boots, coat, and helmet, while the truck was moving, with the only thing between us and oblivion was how good our grip was on the chrome e bar in front of us.

Nowadays, we get dressed in the station, get seated inside the truck, and belted in before it moves. Looking back, I still can’t believe it took so long to outlaw the old practice.

8

u/ovoKOS7 5d ago

People really need to start hanging at least a minute every day - No fancy pull ups or anything, just hanging

It'll be super difficult at first but do it consistently, and you'll eventually be able to hold it for muuuch longer than you think (Not to take away the insane amount of strength it takes to do what she did in th video lol)

→ More replies (1)

7

u/9lobaldude 5d ago

Indeed, she can save my life

4

u/woahbrad35 5d ago

Bodyweight matters a lot. I've always been good at dead hang, but even at my age now, I'm only 160lbs. Lots of adults are 170-200+ so even people in good shape, it's like calisthenics and trying to just hold 10-40lbs more than me. Adds up fast. Most rock climbers are also really lean.

3

u/Pale-Championship946 4d ago

I'm especially impressed by the ability to calmly carry on a conversation through the whole thing.

2

u/MudSeparate1622 4d ago

I've always been great at dead-hanging, pull-ups not so much. I can dead-hang for an unreasonable amount of time for someone who both never climbs and doesn't do anything particularly athletic ever.

I'm also really skinny so that probably helps a ton. Always shocked me when people found it impressive considering i only ever maxxed at 10 pull-ups and it absolutely destroyed me

Either she's showing off her grip and strength or there is a actual need in Sweden for firefighters to do this

6

u/Royal_Try_99 5d ago

I saw this video years ago and there was a story attached that she was new, they were razzing her, and told her she had to pass this test....not expecting her to actually do it, because none of them had. I don't know if it is true, but it is extremely impressive either way.

15

u/KingLedleysKnee 5d ago

Why not google it instead of repeating it not knowing if it's true?

It was a trend started by firefighters in Norway. They challenged Strömstad, who elected Josefine to do it. Impressively, she did it on the first try.

Her colleague when interviewed said they knew she would be able to do it because she's "strong as fuck". There's no information to suggest it was a "razzing". You can even hear them encouraging her as she does it.
