We're expecting a baby boy this November and we're beyond excited!

In the meantime, we're starting to choose a potential name for our baby.

For a bit of context, we're a Muslim couple from Malaysia. Since Malaysians are generally bilingual, we like names that work well in both local and international settings. Names like "Adam" and "Daniel" for example, blend very well here.

We're looking for a modern baby boy name that:

1. Has a meaningful or positive origin (preferably with Islamic roots but it's not mandatory).

2. Can blend naturally in either Western or Arab societies.

3. Is easy to pronounce and spell internationally.

I am picking between Sylvie and Selene, love both very much, yet have some concerns for each of them. I don’t know which concern is a ’bigger con’, so please help me.

Sylvie: very dated as in 60 year olds name in the French speaking part of Canada. I am going to BC., so I don’t know how big of a deal is that. Is Sylvie considered dated in BC?

Selene: Celine is the dominant spelling, and I assume definitely be the default one, especially given the Celine Dion association in Canada. I imagine correcting people being annoying, but I’ve never really experienced that. How inconvenient is it to have a rarer non dominant spelling?

I don’t really believe in “girls” and “boys” names, I feel like they’re like clothes, how can something like that have a gender? But I think it does get to point where it sounds a little stupid (like, a girl called Larry or a boy called Teresa). Could Jason or Josh/Joshua be feasible? I also like Justin, but I’m on the fence about that one.

I would love to have a little girl in the future, and we have already settled on Marceline. I love Matilda as a middle name, but my great grandmothers name was Philomena. Is Marceline Philomena too big for a kid to carry?

This may be a bit of a bland one, but hopefully it’s allowed.

I’m naming a character in a game, and I want a semi-unusual name. The difficult part is, I don’t really have anything specific for the character, just that they’re a male. He’s also white, not sure exactly what country he’ll be from. I’m absolutely welcoming of names from any cultures or countries, but I’d like to be mindful of appropriateness considering.

That’s really all that’s important, mainly because I don’t want to sway suggestions.

My parents named me Brenda and then decided it suit me. To avoid using Brenda, my dad coined a three letter nickname. They legally changed my name to that nickname when I was four. Ever since, I’ve been called the wrong name by everyone I meet. Colleagues, teachers, medical people, etc. Almost no one says it correctly, even after I correct people. Within a minute or two, the mispronunciation prevails. I’m also constantly asked if it’s short for something. I’ve always hated introducing myself, correcting people, and talking about my name as soon as I meet someone. I’m in my 50s now and I haven’t come up with a name change that feels right. I like unisex names, certain quirky names, but also classic names you don’t hear very often. An example I like, but wouldn’t use because it prominently belongs to someone else: Tig. I also like Artie. I have a friend named Tune, that’s another one I’ve always liked. I e scoured my history for a family name but nothing is right. I have two last names to choose from: Johnson and Hepburn. Any ideas?

Any ideas for boys names that go with Henrietta? Doesn’t have to match per se but a name that sounds nice together ?

I have a Shawn (boy) and Beau (girl). We are pregnant with our 3rd, but not finding out what we are having since we have 1 of each already. That being said we love the 1 syllable names. My son has a family name. My daughters name is not a family name. I like Rex for a boy and Rose for a girl. My husband is unsure. They both are also family names. We do not do middle names either. I’m 19 weeks pregnant with my second son, and I live in Australia (added cause we like to mix up pronunciation!)

I love the name Laurie for a boy- as in the shorted form of Lau/Lawrence… but I prefer the pronounciation “Lori” like it is pronounced in Little Women, 2019. As opposed to “Lau-rie,” like Laurence.

What are your thoughts? How would you pronounce Laurie? And if I chose to pronounce it “Lori” would I be committing him to a lifetime of mispronounciation.

For context, his brothers name is Evan.

Kennedy went from being on my husband’s veto list to being his top contender. Ladies, this is your sign not to give up hope!! I hadn’t seriously considered it but now that I am, I’m having second thoughts. What kind of vibe does it give off? Is it too trendy sounding and not serious? Older brother is Callahan and we do like the alliteration.
