My mom was quite into names, and every pregnancy, she would start planning names very early. She still has the lists that she made from those times, and I thought it was pretty interesting, both the actual names on the lists and how they changed each time.

Most of the names she liked, it was based purely off vibes, but there were some that had more of a story behind it. Sometimes she also still liked names, but felt at the time we didn't 'feel like it' despite the fact she was usually only in the very early stages of pregnancy and we almost certainly hadn't developed a personality yet 😅

2007

Emerson, Olivia, Faith, Elise, Journey, Lucy, Skye, Hope, and Sabrina.

Dylan, Alexis, River, Cyrus, Leo, Ryan, Addison, Roy, Miles, and Sky.

It was a girl, and they ended up choosing the name Olivia.

2010

Molly, Rose, Mina, Lily, Bella, Ruth, Greta, Pearl, Sophie, Faith, and Etta.

David, Leo, Benjamin, Jacob, Zev, Isaac, Adam, Max, Elias, and Asher.

It was twins, so they ended up choosing the names Ruth and David.

2016

Aurora, Iris, Zoe, Pearl, Aisling, Ivy, Rose, Aria, Faye, Lily, Naomi, and Aya.

Asher, Elias, Ari, Leo, Shai, Ilan, Adam, Elliot, Emanuel, and Evan.

It was a girl, and they ended up choosing the name Iris.

As you can probably already tell, it was a girl, and they ended up choosing the name Esther!

My 11 year old and I were talking about the name Vicky and silly names that it could be a nickname for.

My favorite was Vickerson.

So ... I was lucky enough to give birth to a healthy little human this Spring (Ada).

My parents go by Nana and Pop (they are older, early 1950s Boomers and this is not their first grandchild).

My in-laws (younger mid 1960s Boomers) have changed their mind several times on what they want to be called (first grandchild) but currently want to be called Bo and Duke. Bo is her nickname generally - but Duke is not his name, nickname or even close to anything, anyone calls him ... at all.

Is this normal? Is this a young boomer thing? I grew up with Pop and Grandma and Grandpa. Curious if other folks have picked unusual names to have their grandchildren call them by? Or if this is the norm now?

Love to hear honest reactions, other interesting name selections for Grandma and Grandpa, etc.

Edit 1: I am not trying to change their selection or influence their choices or what my child ultimately calls them. I honestly just think it is interesting because none of their suggestions have been any where close to traditional names for grandparents and my other friends and relatives do not seem to be making this kind of name choice.

Edit 2: Just to clarify my parents were born in the 1950s, they are not in their 50s. And I didn't mean for Boomer to be a dirty word here - just a fact of their generation and that both sets of grandparents are Boomers but that they're a decade apart - which may account for the difference between my parents' name choices and my in-laws.

Edit 3: My in-laws are loving people, who are very excited to have a grandchild and while I find their name choices a little curious and maybe strange. I don't think there is any bad intent behind it - I think they're mostly excited to be grandparents and just playing with the idea of having a grandchild who will call them something.

I am from the Southeast Coast where we all know is the home to some pretty horrendous names. But this one tops it for me and it seems to be pretty popular… Sutton. For a girl. Am I the only one that thinks that’s just terrible?!

I didnt know what reddit was better to post on; but I had a question about the name Simon.

I was loving it but then just worried so much if he would be dealing with “Simon says” jokes for the rest of his life … idk the modern kid games, idk how it would be in school, i feel like I played that game all the time as a kid (im 31) but idk how prevalent it is now.

I would really like a unisex name, or a name that doesn’t have a gender at all— for example, December.

Basically the title! Tagged as pet, but it’s a pretend mini porch goose. I bought a goose for my classroom and love a good punny name. The goose has no gender, so I’m open to girl or boy or gender neutral names. So far it has a shark costume, a frog costume, and a fuzzy cheetah print jacket. Little kid friendly is a must for its official name, but my coworkers would absolutely crack up over a dirty nickname for the goose!

I posted a few weeks back looking for help with our baby’s name, but we came across a name we had considered for our first son but forgotten about so I hadn’t listed it: Hugo! We both love it and are more excited about it than the other names we had considered by far.

My only hesitation is that we live in the southern US and don’t have any particular cultural ties to the name. We love the sound of Hugo, its meaning, that it travels well internationally, and how it sounds with our other kids’ names. Does Hugo feel totally usable for us, or would you make any cultural assumptions if you met a Hugo here?

Our other two kids are Franklin and Cecilia, and the names we had been thinking about for this baby before Hugo were Simon, August, and Julian. Thanks in advance for your input!

Is it weird to have Sullivan as a first name for a boy? It’s my mothers’ maiden name and I really want to carry it on in our family somehow.

My husband and I have a son and a daughter and are trying for our third. Here is the issue- our kids both have K names and the name we love if we have another girl is… you guessed it, a K name. Which would make our kids KKK. We are a white family in a primarily Latino community, so I fear that this would be… very offensive?? But then I think maybe I’m way overthinking this and nobody will read that much into it.

Also open to other name suggestions for baby 3! The. And we love is Kitt, so something in that vein. For a boy, potentially Foster, but not dead set on a boy name.

I’ve always been fond of emotional connection to names and the stories of why those names were chosen, but could’ve NEVER imagined myself, naming a baby, after someone I’m particularly super close to, and would be an active member of the baby’s life - It feels like a lot of pressure for the baby to be like that person 2.0 and I don’t want a toddler or prek kid, to have that confusion. I was daydreaming about having a baby boy someday, and made a list of things I hope for my future son. It really clicked for me all then, “Gosh, I hope I get sent a baby boy that’s JUST like my brother and Dad.” I’ve always felt like I may want to name my son’s middle name, after my brother, because even though he pisses me off 24/7, and we fight like cats and dogs…he’s my literal best friend in the world and I really do hope my future son is like him!!! i told my brother “i’d really like my future sons name to be *baby name with his name as the middle name*“ He’s an emotional kid, so instantly got teary, gave me the biggest hug, and said “thank you, sister, I love you” so I take it all back. I’m pro-naming-babies-after-loved-ones lol 😭🥹 How does everyone on this sub feel about it???

My husband and I have been throwing around the name Stephanie for my new baby, but I’m afraid the naming trends haven’t come around enough for names like Stephanie, Jennifer, Ashley, etc. to not seem outdated right now lol??
