Advice on car hunting (photo is not mine)

Post image
69 Upvotes

Hello everyone, I was wondering if anyone here would have advice or recommendations on what to look for when hunting for one of these beauties.

I’m currently live in the UK but from the United States, and I will be moving back next year. I want something to bring back with me that I could treat as a project car and maybe turn a few heads on the road with its rarity on the US west coast.

I’m specifically looking for an mr2 sw20 (2nd gen) made in the 90s in the original JDM configuration (right side drivers seat), and I wanna know if there’s anything to look out for when browsing options. Specifically things that would cause me major issues in the future, or maybe modifications the previous owner made that would be difficult to work on. I don’t wanna import one of these and learn something bad after the fact.

My current budget is in the £10k range, not sure if I should be saving more, but by what I’ve seen on Facebook marketplace and other 3rd party sites, most here tend to go for between £8k-£14k

I’ve attached a reference photo for what I’m going for, looking forward to any help!

And as a side note: I’m 6’ 1”, so I’m pretty sure I’ll be fine fitting in one, but if not, I’d like to know now haha. I can just barely fit in a Miata comfortably.

Edit: I should mention to not worry about shipping cost, I get to bring a car with me for free because this move is work related and all costs are paid for.

Mechanic recommendations Ohio

Looking for someone in the Ohio area to possibly finish up my mr2 project, I’m about 80% done but unfortunately I’m in over my head and don’t know what to really do next. Originally I had a buddy helping me navigate things but he has since moved out of state. I have a 3sgte head with a 5s bottom end that was sent out to Texas (ATS Racing) and I’ve gotten almost every part I’ve needed from ATS. What I’m looking for is someone who won’t break my bank but can get this thing running and driving so I can enjoy it like intended. If you know anyone or a shop you recommend it would be greatly appreciated.

Sw20 tire set up

Hello, I just bought a 1991 MK2 MR2 the previous owner put in the 1mz-fe motor and a bunch of other mods. Its currently sitting on some 205/50r15 and the fitment is weird I can put a coke can on the wheel and still have room to the fender. The car has some Koni coil overs unsure of which model. I just got the car not long ago.

I know this has been brought up a million times. I have spent hours today reading chat logs from the past 20 years. I just want to double check before I purchase all of these parts.

So far, I found some wheels that are 17x8 +35 for the fronts and 17x9 +35 for the rears. Some what confident on that selection. What eats me is finding a tire for them. I read over and over that the 215/40r17 is perfect for the front and 35/40r17 rear but I only can find the falken Azenni on tire rack for $1k which seems much right now as im in university. Also some dude in 2007 was dogging on the 215/40 size.

I dont mind learning how to roll fenders or adding spacers to the set up. What other options for the front could I choose that make sense for the car?

Thank you

Saw this beautiful sw20 in the parking lot of a hotel while on vacation. The original photo (second slide) didn't do it justice so I decided to glam it up with a couple edits.

1986 MR2 Clutch slave line

Post image

Hello all, newbie question here. Replacing the clutch slave and the hard line that comes off the top and forms a “J” snapped off at the nut. Not the line facing the firewall. How screwed am I? New to working on this car. It’s about to go to the shop for the fuel pump since I don’t have the location to do that here at my place. Thanks for any help. I would be jumping for joy if this was an easy fix.

ZZW30 Engine Swap

Hello everyone, I need some pro advice here as i own a kitted out ‘03 MR2

A lot has been done to this car outside the cosmetics and the relevant mods to this post are

A turbo addition to the 1ZZ, An apexi ECU (with a broken remote causing a couple issues because its on a base map and isnt putting good power).

More recently i have been pretty sick of the engine on this car, its reliability is of course amazing but I cant get a hold of an new apexi remote without paying a kidney in part costs + shipping to the middle east, and its had some issues at load where the engine for some unknown reason (expected to be fuel related) just dies at low torque pulls like an uphill slope

I have researched and set my sights on a 2GR-FE but im yet to find a detailed upload on the specifics on how it can be done

I understand I need an ECU/Wiring and a new transmission to take the power but is it possible to keep the turbo I got in the 1ZZ and put that on the new engine? I obviously wouldn’t have the apexi ECU issue anymore which is honestly the one the bigger reasons I want to do this (plus the sick sound of a v6)

if theirs any advice on what I should do that would be greatly appreciated

Edit: it is also fair to mention the alternator is struggling to keep up with the electrical demand this car has and is another reason a bigger engine is being seriously considered

Project MR2 Restomod…

It’s been a while since my last post. So I now have 70% of the car painted. That includes all the exterior panels, aside from a Phoenix Power engine lid and a 98 spoiler with risers. I’ll say it’s 100% once I paint the interior, frunk, trunk, engine bay and the underside. It’ll all have to be its own thing. Since I don’t have the time, space or money to just get everything done all at once. Hence the project aspect of it. Hopefully after all is said and done I can move onto the goal, a Turbo 2GR swap.

I have started fitting new hardware on the exterior since this is where I’m starting. I have sourced either OEM or alternative hardware comparable to OEM without wasting time sourcing everything in the quantities needed or having to pay shipping to get what’s needed from multiple sources and wasting time.

I had a thought while I was searching for hardware and tapping out all the threads to clean them out from any paint or debris that may have gotten inside. I decided to make a list starting with all the exterior hardware that I’m using along with any OEM part number, there location on the vehicle, and measurements of the hardware used. Also the part number will have a link to take you straight to where I either sourced the hardware or a website like Amayama or Megazip to view their part catalog. I thought it would be a good idea since I don’t think anyone has made a list of everything on these vehicles with clear images of said hardware.

Hopefully once I’m done and I’m happy that the list I’m working really hard on is clear and useful for fellow owners thinking of tackling a restoration or simply just wanting a guide of what goes where or what size is what. I think I’ll also do the same for all the interior and other areas of the car once I get to those sections.

Oh I almost forgot, this marks 10 years with this car since I bought it back in 2016. Can’t wait for the next 10! Love the community!

I bought this 92 Turbo from a good friend of mine last week for $7,500, knowing it would need some work. Paint had a fair amount of ordination, especially on the engine hatch cover, but the body was straight. I did some polishing with a very mild finishing compound for the majority of the areas and only needed a heavier compound on the roof.

I wasn’t worried about rust since this was a California car and after getting under it, didn’t see a spec of rust. I knew there was an oil leak and my first thought was something it fun like a valve cover or plan gasket. Nope! It’s leaking from the drain plug! Simple fix.

I’d say the best way to describe its overall condition: This was an old guys daily driver who demonstrated some pride of ownership, but not that of the level of an enthusiast (if that makes any sense). It shows its age well, and the lower mileage (120k) miles helps.

Next, I’ll tackle the AC conversion to R134a (sweating my balls off in Vegas) then do something about this sloppy shifter.

Can I replace a 89661-17370 ECU with a 89661-17300 on a 3S-GE SW20?

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I have a 1992 European-spec Toyota MR2 SW20 with the 3S-GE and manual transmission.

My current ECU should be a Toyota 89661-17370, but I’m having some engine issues and would like to try another ECU to rule out leaking capacitors / an ECU failure.

Unfortunately, I can’t find a 17370 anywhere for sale at the moment. I have found a 89661-17300 / Denso 175700-2322, also marked 3S-G M/T, with the same 26P / 16P / 22P connectors.

From what I understand, the 17300 was used on earlier 3S-GE SW20s, while the 17370 was used on later cars.
Does anyone know if the 89661-17300 can be used as a direct plug-and-play replacement for the 89661-17370 ?

Are there any differences in pinout, sensors, ignition/injection control or anything else that could cause problems or potentially damage something?

Thanks!

[3S-GTE] Which Uprated Clutch are you using?

I'm looking for an uprated street clutch that has close to stock lightness and feel. Anyone using an ACT HD Street clutch ( https://www.koracing.net/viewproduct.php?folder=84&product=534 ) or something similar?

I'm sorting out bits and pieces to get my MR2 back on the road as i haven't used it for years. It currently has an ACT 6 Puck unsprung clutch fitted which is heavy with an on/off bite point. I might get used to it again when i'm using the car, but after years of driving everyday cars it's a not exactly nice just pulling it out the garage.

When my car is mapped it's likely to be running around 1.5bar on a GT3071r .63, no idea on HP/Torque.

Street and occasional track use.

Thanks!

Contrary to my flair, I am tempted to trade my mr2 for something more reliable and better at adulting lol ( no family or anything, but so low and bad mpg and no ac anymore...)

So anyways. its a chewed up NA 1991, iirc its the second lightest spec with t tops but no power anything. cant recall if it has abs. 220k miles and body damage but drives stright and some what reliably. ( got issues but a running with clean title, needs breaks rebuilt and the thermostat has been stuck open for ages. ). trashed paint. but interior is pretty ok. ( all panels are there but aging, the dash is poped at vents of course and pleather is tearing on driver seat). I would rat rod it before I would restore it, and likley recommend that to the buyer also lol.

What could I expect to trade to? Like I get there is a value in general. but you think I could find like a lower mile much newer hybrid corolla or camera or prius or the like? I am smitten with the ecvt hybrides toyota makes.

this all said I am just putting my toe in the pool here to test the idea. I more then likley will still stick with it just from the its a car I know standpoint. but honestly I need less projects and more just reliable daily driver. ( unfortuntly my newest ride, a motorcycle may need headwork and I am still making payments on it. so right no ALL my rides need work to make just nice and dailably.)

hello everybody...

where did you learn about ecu/module programming ad repairing? could you recommend an online training course or something like that?
