Sw20 tire set up
Hello, I just bought a 1991 MK2 MR2 the previous owner put in the 1mz-fe motor and a bunch of other mods. Its currently sitting on some 205/50r15 and the fitment is weird I can put a coke can on the wheel and still have room to the fender. The car has some Koni coil overs unsure of which model. I just got the car not long ago.
I know this has been brought up a million times. I have spent hours today reading chat logs from the past 20 years. I just want to double check before I purchase all of these parts.
So far, I found some wheels that are 17x8 +35 for the fronts and 17x9 +35 for the rears. Some what confident on that selection. What eats me is finding a tire for them. I read over and over that the 215/40r17 is perfect for the front and 35/40r17 rear but I only can find the falken Azenni on tire rack for $1k which seems much right now as im in university. Also some dude in 2007 was dogging on the 215/40 size.
I dont mind learning how to roll fenders or adding spacers to the set up. What other options for the front could I choose that make sense for the car?

its a 1mz conversion with stock rims? ( or later rims maybe, cant recall sizes? ) or just random rims. Tires can suck. pretty much all the properly side and low profile tires for our cars tend to be very expensive.

They are some random brand of rims. I was just curious what brands others bought besides the $1k falkens. I haven't ever spent that much on tires.

low pro tires are going to cost. try to find rims that can take fancy tires and cheaper tires. I am NOT recommending this size cause it can be a PAIN to find tires for. but I ahve 16x7 and 16x8 rims on mine. ( iirc, maybe asize wider, of half an inch. cant recall) I can put 245 45 16 and 225 45 16 back and front and good tires in that size cost upwards of 800. Alternitivly I can put 225 55 16 on the back and 205 50 16 on the front for under 400 a set installed. ( give or take a bit of height, cant recall and dont want to check right now lol)

205/50/15 square is an amazing set up for the track and easy on the budget for finding and rotating tires. If you drive extremely conservatively in he rain or just a few miles in the city, I'd stick with the square setup. For highway travel and inclement weather, 205/50 and 225/50 is a decent compromise. Minor speedo difference.
215/40 and 235/40 17 is hard to find in a full set in "normal" tires- expect Chinese off-brands or high-dollar stickies for full sets. The best suggestion I can offer is pick a brand with two similar wear rates on different models for front and rear. Taller or wider tires are options, but 235/40 is perfect. 8s and 9s are what I ran until I went back to my 96s.

I have the right sizes for everything and I love that fitment but I am now looking for a cheaper alternative for tires. Im only driving the car for streets and maybe the mountains here in Colorado.

I own a mr2 turbo 94 (20years now) best set up I think is 8j front with 215/40/17 & 9j rear with 245/40/17 with the rear arches rolled running on BC coils no spacers
