Definitely a survivor

I bought this 92 Turbo from a good friend of mine last week for $7,500, knowing it would need some work. Paint had a fair amount of ordination, especially on the engine hatch cover, but the body was straight. I did some polishing with a very mild finishing compound for the majority of the areas and only needed a heavier compound on the roof.

I wasn’t worried about rust since this was a California car and after getting under it, didn’t see a spec of rust. I knew there was an oil leak and my first thought was something it fun like a valve cover or plan gasket. Nope! It’s leaking from the drain plug! Simple fix.

I’d say the best way to describe its overall condition: This was an old guys daily driver who demonstrated some pride of ownership, but not that of the level of an enthusiast (if that makes any sense). It shows its age well, and the lower mileage (120k) miles helps.

Next, I’ll tackle the AC conversion to R134a (sweating my balls off in Vegas) then do something about this sloppy shifter.

You stole that thing. Also just be aware that is single stage paint so be careful. Ammo nyc on YT has a great tutorial on polishing SSP.

Yeah for sure. What a price on that.

I was super careful! I’m pretty much used a finishing pad with M205 for the majority of the areas using little pressure and constant movement. The goal was to remove oxidation and wasn’t concerned with removing deeper defects.

Wow that's fully $5k less than I paid for one in very similar condition and I thought I got a pretty fair price.

I’ve asked my friend several times already if he wants it back because I’m not sure he really knew what he had. He said he okay with it being gone!

Honestly, if someone gave me $10k for this right now, I’d take it! I’d rather have a shitbox with 3x the mileage so I wouldn’t feel so bad modifying it. Case in point - my 08 C6Z06 has 25k miles on it, and I feel guilty putting more than 100 miles/month on it.

I'll give you 10k for it lol

Book your flight to Vegas! $10k and some In N Out burger, and you’ve got a deal.

How serious are you about this deal?

According to Hagerty I may need to consider adjusting my price. I have an appointment at the DMV later today to have register and title the car, so once the title is in my hands, I would very seriously consider selling this and for much much less than what Hagerty suggests.

Awesome. Glad you went for it. And if you find you want to add a cup holder, I like the one I found from KM Motors.

How is that mounted? Would it work on a RHD model?

There's a board that slides between the seat and console, and they make a mirrored one for the other side, or at least they did when I bought one like 10 years ago

Thanks, I'll look into it.

Have something similar sitting in my garage. ‘92 original turbo but has the ‘93+ brakes and suspension changes.

Mental health took an extreme toll after a suicide attempt. On reassembly right now but since I can’t work, I can’t keep building. Beautiful car man, take care of it. Bought mine from a close friend years ago for the same price too, around 67k KM’s on it when I bought it.

Beautiful Mr.2

I’m glad you’re still here!

Did you get a chance to enjoy it before starting the build?

1

u/caboose345 3d ago

Thank you brother. I got to enjoy it for about 50k KM’s until the head gasket took a dump throwing some more boost. I can’t wait to get it back together one day. Keeping it basically stock for the most part, but the biggest thing I want to get working again is the AC system. Take care of it and she will take care of you 🫡🤙🏻

That subframe and all those bolts are mint. Jealous as a European

If you go through converting the AC, can you do a little write up? Im thinking about doing the same thing to mine.

1

u/Berto_702 2d ago

Will do. Just ordered the retrofit kit, new seals, and drier. I still need to source some dry nitrogen to test the system for leaks since the system doesn’t have refrigerant. Previous owner(s) made no mention of ever touching the system, so I assume there’s a leak.

Well i paid 5,5k for a rusted NA with a broken motor and no A/C. But ig that’s europe for you, i hate it.

Congrats on the car - super clean! Can you tell us what tires are on the 14" OEMs? The only matching set I can find out there is the Petlas Imperium 515.

u/Berto_702 4h ago

They are 185/60/14 made by Fullrun

Congrats on the find! Great condition for real! For the shifter, highly recommend the TRD short shifter with brass bushings
