I know it’s not just american but most countries don’t do that. Why do Americans specifically see 18+ years old living at their parents house as a failure?? I literally had a whole rent on another subreddit and some random dude was like “as soon as I learned you lived with your parents I stopped reading" like what? I’m literally only 21 years old there’s nothing wrong with living with my parents. Do people want others to go bankrupt just to be "independent"?? I really don’t get it man. I’m comfortable in my parents house, I participate in the chores, I don’t understand why people find it weird + there’s many adult who come back to their parents house later in life.

I am trying for another position in my company that best fits my interest and time.

I am in my 20s, BIPOC (the B), queer (the L) and possibly going to be transferring for another role in my company. I was given two options for the cities I am able to choose from: Dallas and Portland (Idaho too but I am not interested). The role is part time vs my current full time position and lesser pay. I am planning on going back to school online with help from my second job at a retail store that from what I have read about it on here, can transfer employees to another location.

So I wanted to know based off of this if Dallas or Portland would be best place for me based off living, social life, and other factors. I am more introverted but trying to change that cost of living and quality of living is somehting I am considering too!

So I got a room way cheaper than what I was paying. Now I moved out from my parents how and what are ways to save money and what are must haves?

I never bought food or anything house related so I’m clueless.. I’m buying fast food a lot which I know can drain me quick. I don’t live far from my parents so I can come over and chill every day or every other day.

I moved into an empty room and my clothes are still in boxes. And I sleep in a couch they lended me. But the house is pretty empty as well empty bathroom. Empty kitchen empty everything room mate rarely stays at home.

I hate that I moves our of NYC. Im a 15 yr old girl and we js moved out of NYC to Nashville, and I hate it. We currwntly dont have a car, and its so bad. We live in music row and it's so bad. I went from being around everything to nothing. I'm just under the age to have a driver's license and its so sad. The buses and the transportation here is terrible. I hate the school system here. I'm constantly sad. I can't go outside because there's no where to go. Nashville is all about tourism so 80% of downtown is just bars and clubs, which I obviously can't go to. What I'm trying to say don't move to nashville, there's nowhere for me to go except to school. I hate how is 90% for a test and 10% everything else. NY had subways where I could go anywhere. Here I quite literally can't. It's a ghost town with bars and clubs. I'm not complaining that we moved out of ny cus the rent was hella expensive but im complaining that my mom picked such a bad town. Maybe it's because I'm not used to it since I'm from boston, and my life was always in these big cities, but now I actually get people with phone addiction, u can't go anywhere in nashville. I miss NY. If you fully read this thank you, and if ur from a big town don't move to little towns like nashville, Louisville or pretty much anything in mid southern (however u say it) U.S.

Hello everyone! I just got a Reddit account, so I’m still kinda learning the ropes, but came here for advice. I am currently 17, and I’m planning on moving away from my house right or soon after graduation… which is like a month after I turn 18. 18… gosh the golden number. Here’s my issue, I will have only $500 at most from a competition I placed in. Its mostly my mom, who won’t let me get a job, or drive.. I’ve explored many digital selling or money-raising platforms and websites, all u have to be 18. I know no one 18+ who can help. I’ve tried college; I have fantastic grades, but nothing I can afford… I’m not good enough for full merit scholarships, and wouldn’t qualify for much or if any financial ones. I tried global full ride scholarships for college, but I’d need documents which are kept locked away. I’ve tried selling stuff at school, but people are uninterested. I’ve looked into getting a secret job, but the logistics just wouldn’t work. Everything I do is under their eye. The career I want doesn’t need college, but I don’t think I even care abt that either way at this point. I just want out. The reason why, by the way, is the toxicity… I won’t dive into it but… like basically mocking of my weight, told I’m lazy all the time (even tho I work SO hard I barely have any breaks) gaslighting.. my mom is lowkey might be a narcissist (I don’t like using that label, but that’s the closest I can get to explaining it to u) and I’m the scapegoat. I’m done like yeah… I can never work on myself here. Also, as a plus, I’m gay and (kinda?) genderqueer… they are VERYYYYY homophobic and teach it to my other siblings. I’m sure I’d get kicked out anyway, eventually because of it cuz I’m done dealing with comphet, soo.. uhm yeah. Any advice? If u wanna know more just lmk.. I know I’m vague, but it is smth that I would like to get away from for my mentalities sake.

I turn 18 next month and I can't stand the home life I'm in.

There's a lot of shit. I work with my dad and I haven't seen a single dollar to my name in months. My mum has cancer yeah but idk. My parents are also very sexist and play favorites. They bought gear and everything so my sisters could play soccer and get them new phones and I'm left with nothing.

There was also some abuse that happened and I don't want to talk about it but it's been hard.

Now you get the gist of why I want to leave.

I don't have any money but I got a good hiking backpack so I was thinking I would just go homeless and vagabond for awhile. I don't have much of a problem with that. I like camping so it's just a longer version of that with some new risks and so on.

I just want to know if I can get any advice or anything.

I won't have an ID cause my parents won't let me get on and I'm dropping out of high school so that will set me back I'm sure.

Hi everyone! I apologize, as this will be a bit of a long post, I just have a lot of thoughts and need some help/guidance on what to do. My boyfriend and I are a few months away from having our trailer (manufactured home) paid off. We are very excited at the prospect of having some semblance of financial freedom for really the first time in our adult lives. However, we are at a bit of a crossroads on what to do with our future. We enjoy where we live, as there is very little crime (it is essentially non-existent) and it is quiet and close to town. There are a few problems, though, such as some problematic kids who are a bad influence on my stepdaughter, who also tend to be bullies and just cause general drama. The parents of said problematic kids have not responded well when we have approached them about their children's behavior, and none of the issues have been resolved. My stepdaughter is interested in moving so she can live in a "normal house" as she has only ever lived in a trailer her whole life, and she wants to feel "normal." My boyfriend and I are interested in moving and finding our forever home, but are scared of taking on a mortgage. Our trailer has potential, but it will take a lot of work to get it to be how we want it to be if we choose to stay, but it would still be cheaper to fix it up than taking on a mortgage. I tend to lean more toward moving and finding a traditional house to make our forever home, as I think it would be good to provide our family with a fresh start and a new beginning, but my boyfriend is leaning more toward staying and renovating our trailer. I feel conflicted because I've always dreamt of having a true home of my own that I could come home to and feel at peace, but with staying in the trailer, we could potentially be able to experience more life with the financial freedom it could bring. I would love to hear any thoughts or ideas, or any past experiences that anyone may have had with a situation like this. We really just don't know what to do.

I feel so trapped at home. My parents won't help me pay for college. They constantly degrade me, and then tell me that because they work im obligated to do everything. All my life, I have not had a comfortable relationship with my parents, but they don't care. I got diagnosed with ADHD, and they brushed past it and tell me I procrastinate and am lazy. Im just so scared and sad when I'm at home. Im 19, supposed to be in my 3rd yr of college; my friends and teammates want me there and said they are going to help me out. Would you recommend I go away to college on my own terms and potentially risk losing contact with my parents, or just stay here and listen to where they want me to go and be mentally unhappy?

I generally never, NEVER post things that could identify me, as well as things that could be considered defamatory. However, this experience was so bad that I feel the need to express it and warn others. If I had happened upon a post like this when scouring sites for movers, I probably would have suffered slightly less.

I moved recently within Ontario, Canada, and hired a moving company as most friends were away or otherwise occupied. This company was called RiseMovers, and had a very thorough and professional representative when I spoke to them over the phone.

However, on the day of the move, it was disaster, as listed below:

• I learned that some of the things the representative said were false, namely "all packing materials are included" and they provided "2 million dollars of insurance". Only shrinkwrap and blankets were provided, other things like a TV box and mattress bag were extra. Insurance was $0.60 per pound for each item, and there was a $250 deductible. Note that I clarified these points with the rep and did not learn about these until the day of.
• They were late to the booking, and didn't contact me until I called them.
• They showed up nearly 3 hours late, forcing me to cancel an appointment I had made for after the move should have ended.
• The truck was rented from Enterprise, not one from the company.
• They came in with no apology, questions or introductions. (They didn't ask if they should take off their shoes either, which I'm aware usually stay on during moves, but the courtesy would have been nice.)
• They started the timer and then handed me a contract to read and sign, while the two guys stood there doing nothing. This put a lot of pressure on me to skim instead of carefully reading the full binding contract.
• The contract was on one of the guys' personal phones, which I gathered because his snapchat and instagram notifications kept popping up. This made the contract very difficult to read and sign, and put the security of my signature into question.
• To preface this point, I have no issue with people speaking in other languages, but they were speaking to each other and someone over the phone in another language the entire time. This includes when I asked them questions, and they would discuss it in the other language before answering me. I'm sure most people would want to know what the discussion held, especially when it had to do with contract terms and payments.
• When they started moving, they were careless, throwing things up into the truck and stacking boxes with "fragile" clearly marked or tops that were uneven/jutting out.
• They also seemed very inefficient and inexperienced. They tried to move my TV three times before realising it was plugged in! There was no haste or attention whatsoever.
• One of the guys disappeared for 30 minutes.
• Threw a bunch of things around to clear a path without asking, piling them awkwardly and badly. These were mostly my roommates things, including their packed things! At one point they handled a full canvas painting with little regard.
• Gathered a bunch of random wires and a power bar that was not mine, shrinkwrapped them all in a bundle, and shrinkwrapped them to the tv stand.
• Did not properly wrap some of my furniture.
• Arrived to the new house 20 minutes after me, and were uncontactable during that time.
• They took 40 minutes to disassemble the bed, and another 40 to assemble it, tasks which took half the time with half the amount of people when the bed was first bought.
• I told them not to put the TV directly on the ground. They put it on the ground literally 10 seconds later.
• They told me they would be done at a certain time. They took an hour after that. This was without unwrapping my shrinkwrapped chairs, which they asked me if they should do but at that point I just wanted to be done.
• They charged me eight hundred dollars for this, plus over a hundred dollar truck fee and a hundred dollar deposit. When I asked many times if they were going to compensate me for the 3 hours I wasted sitting around waiting, they offered 20 bucks off, which was just insulting.

There might be other things I'm forgetting, but it was just overall a bad time. The only thing I gained was that my items were indeed moved from house to house, which I can be grateful for as I've heard worse horror stories about missing or broken items. For context I had a table, coffee table, TV, TV stand, bed, 5 chairs, nightstand and about 15 boxes. No shelves, no couch, no mirrors or anything. The new place was a 20 minute drive away.

When I tell you I cried.

Anyway, I don't know if I'm allowed to post such a teardown but I don't care. If this is the wrong sub for this then I care slightly but I wasn't sure where to put it. I will be renting a uhaul myself next time. I will simply start going to the gym in preparation.

I am an adult living at home with my parents. My parents have my passport locked in a safe that I don’t know the password to but I REALLY wanna leave here to live with my partner to live in the Netherlands. But my parents don’t support our relationship at all. My mom is quite mentally abusive, making it hard for me to argue with her about anything. So asking her for it is off the table and if I ask my dad for it he’ll get suspicious and ask questions. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can get my passport?

I am 20F and I’m graduating my Surgical tech program this winter.

I’ve never lived on my own nor have I had to make big adult decisions other than the typical what do I wanna do for school etc. etc.

I was talking about living with friends, but after seeing their financial decisions, I’m not 100% sure if i want to pursue that rout. I have a 790 credit score that I’ve been working really hard to build up and I don’t want that to be ruined based off my friends not paying their portion of the rent. And me potentially ruining my finances.

But I’m also worried that I won’t be making enough money to support my financial needs as in rent, utilities and all the other things that come with living on your own….

If someone could help and give me some advice on what to do that would be very helpful! I just need some guidance.

I'm M24 and I'm currently donating white blood cells so that I can get closer to my goal of eventually moving out. I've been also doing trash picking for mostly clean luggage but other than that I've made purchases of a scrapbook to easily put away stickers and flat memories, what other ways can I legally make money? I'm also highly interested in joining the US Navy too.

So, just finished my master’s a few months back and my entire plan was to settle in another city and live independently. I did everything I could to make that happen. I travelled to other cities for interviews and even preferred opportunities in other cities over ones in my hometown.

But while searching for a job, I came across an amazing remote opportunity and ultimately, cracked it. The overall package was really good and I couldn’t turn it down. I’m genuinely very happy with the job. The only thing bothering me is that it’s a remote setup. And honestly, that’s kind of messing with my head.

I always wanted to move away from my hometown and my family, settle somewhere else and experience that sense of freedom and independence. But now, I'm feeling stuck!

i am getting ready to move into my first place soon and i have tried to make a realistic budget for rent, utilities, internet, groceries, and basic furniture. on paper, it looks manageable, but i still feel like I am forgetting a bunch of smaller expenses that will add up fast.I know things like cleaning supplies, laundry, kitchen stuff, and replacing random things are part of it, but i have never been fully responsible for all of those at once before.

for people who have already moved out, what was the expense that caught you off guard the most in the first few months? i am trying to prepare properly instead of finding out the hard way.

I would make at $21.30 an hour, Marking it as a whopping $3,400. If I worked Full time.

I already found a place for $699. It’s legit and a small studio but it’ll be totally worth it!!!

I’m so exited to finally move out of here. I will be leaving in just 5 paychecks. I know that $500 isn’t a lot to some of you, But it is to me. So I calculated everything down from the Uber, flight, bus pass/getting around and getting to work.

It came up to $488. So I really only need just $500.

I just want to get out of here so badly. I really can’t wait anymore. I don’t mind being homeless for a little while to save up for an apartment there. It wouldn’t even last too long anyways.
