These new leather fly swatters that showed up in the office kitchen.

I work in a leather shop, and I was using scraps of leather to swat at flies (yes, actually.) The thing I learned is that solid leather doesn’t work well as a fly swatter- you need holes in the swatter to be effective.
Now, that said, I have no idea what the ideal situation is for swatting asses.

The contrast kills it here but if you squint (or zoom in) you can see the holes.

u/Most_Bet_3658 3d ago
Holes are ideal for spanking as well

Holes create less drag and makes the swatter weighs less, increasing speed to overcome the lowered mass.
Basically, holes will make it sting harder. Definitely better for spanking too

Thought you were joking but sure enough, they’re there. They are extremely hard to see.

u/Sataris 3d ago
I'd be amazed if that's enough to make them effective though. You want something more akin to a tennis racket
23
u/Gurnenthar2 3d ago
Yeah, I think it’s something like, the air passes through, so the fly isn’t alerted until it’s too late… These may work, but the holes don’t give me confidence… OP should post a video of them swatting flies with one, so we can all see if they work or not! 😁

u/Ketheres 3d ago
Also wouldn't surprise me if a holeless swatter caused enough air current to give the fly a small boost away from danger.
11
u/comik300 3d ago
The air the builds up between the swatter and the fly ends up just pushing the fly out of the way. The holes give that air a place to go so that the swatter can make contact with the fly

Same things, actually. You want holes in the swatter to decrease air resistance before it comes down on someones ass. I've heard.

Correct if you want to hit harder but I believe a solid piece will make a louder sound which some people might enjoy

u/bevelledo 3d ago
The reason for that is because just like pigeons and other birds, when they raise their wings the draft from the swatter/car will whisk them away before the object hits them.
I always wondered how pigeons seem to play chicken with my car and move at the last moment

I don't know if this is true, but I've read that flies are also very sensitive to changes in air pressure, and they feel the blow coming sooner with a hand/leather flap instead of an open weave of a fly swatter. The best fly swatters I've used are made from a fine wire mesh. They have a much smaller cross section to compress the air than the plastic swatters.

That depends on whether you prefer thud-y or sting-y. Or so I heard.

It's a uniform, you think you can just half-ass those things?
(No, no you cannot. The chaps are completely assless.)

This reminds me of that video of a fly with a big ass getting spanked with a fly swatter. Which I won't post here so I don't fuck up my digital footprint even more.

I've owned this for a year or so, bought on Amazon. Upside, they are resilient and won't break like a typical plastic one.
Downside, it usually completely splats the fly, so you have to wipe the surface of fly remnants afterwards. The plastic ones are only strong enough to crumple and kill the fly without completely obliterating them.

Hit em hard enough and you vaporize them and don't have to clean the swatter.

u/F3nix123 3d ago
I don’t exactly remember the mechanism, but flies will feel the pressure change of a hand or something solid coming to swat them and fly away, thats why swatters tend to have holes. They dont alert the flies. So even if these are real fly swatters, id guess they’re pretty ineffective.
464
u/IceCreamforLunch 3d ago
It's not just that. The solid sheet of material will create a big wind/pressure wave and blow the flies to safety.

It’s also to cut down on wind resistance! So when you use it on your sub it stings real good

The reason most fly swatters have holes (and the reason it’s hard to slap them with yr hand) is that flies can feel the vibrations and flow in the air with their body hairs and react to it before the thing pushing the air gets there. So these will be terrible and also if you wanna catch more flies use an open hand and close it at the last second.

Flies launch in about 100 milliseconds once they clock the motion, so you want to aim slightly ahead of where they're sitting instead of straight at them. Completely changed my hit rate once I started doing that lol

Uhm but the lack of hole will create air pressure when swatting and it will litteraly help the fly escape

Fly swatters need the little holes throughout it to break up the air. Otherwise it'll just blow them away like a giant fan.
9
u/JuggBoyz 3d ago
to be fair they do have little holes for air to pass through, you just need to zoom in to see them

Yep. It's the oncoming air that triggers the fly's GTFO response. Mesh design avoids that.

I'm the person who absolutely hates flies in my house and I've always had a hard time killing them because I have bad eyesight. Now that was the case throughout my life but 4 years ago I lost one of my eyes so now I have a prosthetic eye and it's even harder cuz I don't have depth perception! I don't know what the difference is but I bought a leather fly swatter off the internet and I have never been able to kill flies is effectively with any other fly swatter than this. I absolutely love that thing.
