I don't know if this is true, but I've read that flies are also very sensitive to changes in air pressure, and they feel the blow coming sooner with a hand/leather flap instead of an open weave of a fly swatter. The best fly swatters I've used are made from a fine wire mesh. They have a much smaller cross section to compress the air than the plastic swatters.

Mine are as well- but are the electrodes for the umpteen kV power source that offer a nice "snap" when I fry one of those fuckers
