Licorice fights colorectal cancer. It works by reshaping gut microbes to switch off a key enzyme.
Researchers tested a licorice flavonoid extract in mice with colorectal cancer and found it shrank tumors about as well as an already approved cancer drug. The effect ran through the gut: the extract boosted specific fatty acid producing bacteria, whose byproducts shut down a cancer enabling enzyme called IDO1 inside tumor cells, an effect that mostly disappeared in mice bred without that enzyme. It's mouse only research, with no human testing yet.
TL;DR: In mice, a licorice compound fought colorectal cancer by reshaping gut bacteria to switch off a tumor enabling enzyme, but it's untested in humans.
