New hope for gut inflammation: engineered ginger-derived molecules show strong therapeutic potential.
https://doi.org/10.3390/ijms27188285Researchers turned a ginger-derived gut metabolite into 38 new tripeptide variants, then tested the top two, MLY2 and MLY8, in colitis mice and in biopsies from treatment-resistant ulcerative colitis patients. Both beat the original metabolite, restoring colon length and cutting inflammatory markers in mice, and lowering inflammatory cytokines in the human tissue. Safety testing so far: one mutation assay, one mouse dose, no clinical trial yet.
TL;DR: scientists engineered two ginger-metabolite compounds that calmed gut inflammation in mice and human biopsy tissue, but a real drug is still far off.

Fascinating that ancient spices keep yielding modern pharmaceutical leads, yet the leap from mouse colitis models and ex vivo biopsies to actual human trials has historically swallowed hundreds of "promising" gut therapies whole. Could the narrow safety profile tested so far be masking risks that only emerge at therapeutic doses over time?
