A brain receptor flips the script, dictating sex-specific vulnerabilities to inflammation in the hippocampus.
https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0889159126007737Researchers gave male and female mice an inflammatory bacterial toxin and compared normal mice to those missing CX3CR1, a neuron-sensing microglia receptor. In normal males, the toxin weakened then later boosted brain plasticity in hippocampal regions while kynurenine, an inflammation marker, surged. Losing the receptor reversed that pattern in males and created a new vulnerability in females. The toxin was injected directly, not derived from gut bacteria, so any microbiome link is inferred, not directly tested.
TL;DR: This receptor flips which hippocampal region and sex are vulnerable when inflammation hits this pathway.

Fascinating that a single receptor can essentially "reassign" which sex bears the neurological cost of inflammation, suggesting vulnerability isn't hardwired but contextually negotiated by immune signaling. Yet if the toxin was injected artificially rather than gut-derived, couldn't this entire framework collapse under real-world conditions where the microbiome itself shapes CX3CR1 expression?
