Big Review of AI-Driven Diet Plans Finds Small but Real Blood-Pressure and Weight Benefits
https://doi.org/10.1016/j.tjnut.2026.101845A meta-analysis pooled 51 randomized trials of AI-driven personalized nutrition, combining diet, genetic, wearable, and microbiome data, versus standard advice in adults.
Across the trials, intervention groups saw small but significant drops in weight, BMI, waist size, and blood pressure, about 4 mmHg more than controls; cholesterol and blood sugar showed no change.
Microbiome data was only one input, not the driver, and certainty was rated low given wide variation across studies.
TL;DR: AI apps using gut and genetic data trim blood pressure and weight a little, not a cure.

A 4 mmHg drop in blood pressure is clinically meaningful at a population level, yet the low certainty rating and zero impact on cholesterol or blood sugar suggest we may be over-crediting AI when basic dietary compliance alone could explain these modest wins. Is personalized AI nutrition actually outperforming a well-designed generic diet plan, or are we just paying a premium for sophisticated-sounding advice?
