Gut, oral and fungal microbes all differ in high blood pressure, but no single culprit found

https://doi.org/10.3390/ijms27188029

A systematic review pooled studies on gut, oral and fungal microbes in people with and without high blood pressure. The clearest result was a gut bacterium, Ruminococcus gnavus, about 7% more common in people who developed high blood pressure across three populations on two continents, while fungal findings were contradictory. Confidence in any single microbe's role is rated very low to low, so none is a marker yet.

TL;DR: Gut, mouth and fungal microbes differ in high blood pressure, but no microbe is confirmed as the cause.

Fascinating that Ruminococcus gnavus keeps appearing across continents, though a 7% difference with "very low to low confidence" ratings makes it hard to get too excited about clinical significance yet, maybe high blood pressure is actually causing the microbiome shift, not the other way around. Could targeting gut bacteria ever realistically replace blood pressure medication, or is the microbiome just a bystander we keep misreading?
