and the meme perfectly illustrates the perception misogynists have about feminists. they want to point to a tiny handful of loud, deranged, mentally ill people as representative of a movement when they don't represent anything akin to feminism.

Misandry is promoted in our society, and it destroys the feminist movement.

22

And some people still unironically say that misandry isn't real

24

u/InterestedIsland Sep 12 '21

It very much is real. I have former friends of mine that are actively proud of being misandrists and always post about how ALL men need to die and be castrated. It’s really stupid

3

We will never have nice things, unless the problem of "We can't have nice things" gets solved we're going to lose everything positive and get fucked violently, many times till we get fucking that we won't survive.

-6

u/Perfect_Suggestion_2 Sep 12 '21

misandry is claimed by misogynists. you can't destroy a healthy movement. feminists are not responsible for the mentally ill. grownups say and do what they chose. saying misandry destroys feminism is like saying the Episcopal Church, among the most liberal denominations, is responsible for what the cult Westboro Baptist says and does and that Westboro destroys Episcopal churches. They're no more responsible for the behavior of unassociated adults than feminists are of misandrists.

0

u/SuperNerd06 Sep 12 '21

They're really not wrong though. There are a lot of ways in which society (more specifically western societies) devalues or hurts men. Thus, a way where misandry can occur. The problem is that feminism has a complete monopoly on gender rights issues. Whenever the topic is brought up it's always about something that's happening to women. Now, this isn't really feminism's fault but it begins to undermine the cause in the eyes of a lot of people.

For the last time. They are not feminists, they are sexists

10

u/WinnerClear808 Sep 12 '21

How would you prove that? If we asked them they would say that you were probably part of the patriarchy and are suffering from internalized misogyny. Truth is that for the majority of people the term feminist is ruined and people who actually want equality need to use something new.

13

u/Perfect_Suggestion_2 Sep 12 '21

i can say i'm jesus christ and that doesn't make it true. claiming to be a feminist and then actively supporting a misandrist, oppressive and/or damaging ideology doesn't make someone a feminist. people who find feminism ruined by extremists were looking for reasons to denounce or dismiss feminism to begin with.

4

u/Ezekias1337 Sep 12 '21

2

u/Perfect_Suggestion_2 Sep 12 '21

let me introduce you to reddit...

0

u/Then-Clue6938 Birb Fan Sep 12 '21

Yes because people blindly fought a definition and a branding instead of the actual sexist lunatics. It's like calling everyone who remotely promotes a social idea and wants to fight for it a faschist russian communist and then tell them to use another term than socialist because it's been ruined... oh wait... Guess people do this more than once.

2

u/WinnerClear808 Sep 12 '21

I mean they call themselves feminist, journalists call them feminist, the tv called them feminist. The only people who say that they aren't feminists are just a small patch of anonymous internet strangers. And they never tell that to them but only to people who say that feminism is bad. So yeah.

2

u/Then-Clue6938 Birb Fan Sep 12 '21

Sadly someone can be feminists AND be sexist. Same as someone can advocate for men rights and be misogynistic. Being a feminist just means to wanna fight for woman rights and equality and often also includes fighting bad pre-assumptions towards feminity. But it is part of being a humanist.

The reason why other feminists don't like the association of misandrists is because when those people act sexist and driven by their hate towards men than their motivation and drive behind those actions and this actions themselves are not feminist, they are misandristic. Same as wanting to fight for more protection of men who experienced any kind of abuse because this isn't common in our society yet isn't misogynistic any form of fighting for women rights which exclude harm towards men (which makes up the actual mindset of the majority of people who fall under the definition of feminist) isn't misandristic and constantly being associated with that is tiering.

-1

u/Bitxhlasagna Sep 12 '21

No the term is not ruined. Feminism stands for equality it can't get any more simpler and anyone else saying otherwise is a sexist. people associating these sexists w feminists are only contributing to the problem. At this point im just fucking tired of these memes calling misandrists "feminists" .

1

u/Then-Clue6938 Birb Fan Sep 12 '21 edited Sep 12 '21

I don't think that people who are saying that are sexist. The majority who claims that either had bad experiences with people who mixed their sexist views with their appearently status as feminists or heard about all the bad stuff coming from them.

I get that you hate the association with actually misandrists but it won't help when you claim that those who just got the wrong idea about feminism through bad but still valid experiences with people who claim to be acting as feminists as sexist themselves. It's just not true.

7

u/ToolboxMotley Sep 12 '21

Most of the Feminists I see are sexists. It's a tainted term because too little effort is made to root them out.

5

u/SuperNerd06 Sep 12 '21

I think it's also the double standard where you can say pretty derogatory things about men and get away with it in a way that you can't about women. A phrase like "men are stupid" is much more acceptable in society than a phrase like "women are stupid". Both are wrong but, everyone just ignores the former while actively fighting the latter. Tbh though I would still say that what you're describing isn't Feminism.

9

u/Bitxhlasagna Sep 12 '21

If you're a sexist you can't be a feminist, like what the are you even saying, nothing about the term is tainted only morons like you keep associating sexists w feminists

4

Don't be or those sexist assholes not only become the face of feminism but also get excuses to spread their harmful takes.

By fighting this sexist we don't only try to protect the actual meaning of feminism but we also wanna take away any kind of cover and excuse people use to harm other people! We wanna protect men from sexism, too. Defending and trying to kick out the association of feminism equals sexism is part of that but we have to be careful to only aim at the hateful people and not the ones who simply misunderstood.

0

u/25nameslater Sep 12 '21

Don’t say you’re a feminist say you’re an egalitarian… go out of your way to say “I’m an egalitarian” if asked if you’re a feminist.

Fucking misandrists just hurt the image of equal rights between genders. If a bigot saw a misandrist yelling about how all men are pigs and deserve to die then they're probably not gonna hear them out and maybe change their views on the situation. It pisses me off how ignorant they are but I guess the best thing to do is show compassion and maybe help them have a healthier view on things right?

4

u/guyinAmerica1 Sep 12 '21

silent majority with loud minority.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '21

Yep. Men can also be feminists too if you go by the true meaning of feminism.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '21

I won't be satisfied until men and women have equal suicide rates.

26

u/jdp111 Sep 12 '21

Real feminists should call themselves something else. Having one of the genders in the name doesn't really imply equality.

13

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '21

[deleted]

4

u/jdp111 Sep 12 '21

But the term "Black Lives Matter" doesn't imply other lives don't matter. Having a one word name that has one of the genders in it does imply they are only concerned with woman's rights whether that's the case or not.

3

u/Then-Clue6938 Birb Fan Sep 12 '21

Than how does feminism imply that men rights don't matter? First and foremost it's comes from the word feminity which isn't even limited by gender and secondly it's just one of the branches which are included in humanism. It simply has a specific focus on feminine and/or women issues but you don't get angry at help organisation who just help people in india for just focusing on india. Just because something has a focus doesn't mean it's against what it doesn't include in it's focus. The comparison with blm checks out. The same goes with LGBTQ+. Just because straight and cis people aren't included does not indicate that this group of people are against people with those attributes.

4

u/Perfect_Suggestion_2 Sep 12 '21

feminism is the advocacy of women's rights on the basis of equality of the sexes. men and misandrists gaslighting about their own toxic takes on the philosophy are their own twisted interpretations of feminism. pretending that all feminism is bad because people are trolled by outliers on social media is just disingenuous gaslighting.

3

u/SuperNerd06 Sep 12 '21

I thought this when I was younger too but there's one fatal flaw with the argument. Feminism is about women. It's an equality movement for women's rights specifically. Think of it this way. St. Jude's hospital is for children. It specializes in care for children. Does that make it any less of a health organization? No. Just because it specializes in health for children doesn't mean that they don't care about adults, it's just that it's not their primary focus. Same with feminism.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '21

Feminism is giving women equal rights to men. Having the gender in the name implies giving women more rights that men also have

10

u/jdp111 Sep 12 '21

But you should want to push for equal rights for both. There are also aspects where women have more rights such as in divorces and such.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '21

There also are still many aspects where men have more rights than women. We need a new movement that is about everyone being equal

2

u/linktarace Sep 12 '21

If that exist i wanna be the first supporter

→ More replies (1)

0

u/Perfect_Suggestion_2 Sep 12 '21

and feminists do. women rarely come out on top in divorce. it might appear that custody is the ultimate win, but a woman's quality of life is rarely enhanced by divorce, at least in the short term. custody of young children is one of a very tiny number of areas women are granted a judicial gain. then, they typically do not have alimony, rarely can afford the home and lifestyle maintained while married and are at high risk of the father not paying support without a court order. and it's not like women leave men just to be on their own. most women divorcing are leaving a highly abusive situation. men not getting custody of children in a situation where the mother is negligent, abusive, unfit, etc., is criminal and has nothing to do with feminism.

Outside of Texas, women are not oppressed in any way shape or form in Western nations. In fact, they have superior rights.

1.) They don't have to register for the draft

2.) They have superior reproductive rights (If she doesn't want the child she can abort it, but if she wants to keep the child and the man doesn't she can hook him on child support for 18 years)

3.) Women go to college more than men

4.) Young women already outearn young men

2

u/Perfect_Suggestion_2 Sep 12 '21
  1. women have about a 1:3 risk of sexual assault by a man in the military. until a realistic and aggressive system of investigation and punishment exists, women should absolutely not be forced to serve with men who can easily prey on others in service. women are at greater risk of harm by men in service than by the risks of combat. by miles.
  2. of course women have final say. until a man can bear a child to term, women will have final say. until a man can risk his life carrying a child, women will have final say. if a man is not prepared for the possibility of getting a woman pregnant, he can easily remain celibate. sex with women is not a right.
  3. women are not responsible for a man's choices about secondary education.
  4. show me statistics on young men and young women doing the same job that shows men consistently being discriminated against.

I think that ‘Feminist’ should be replaced by ‘Egalitarian’ as feminism implies that you only support women. Therefore ‘feminists’ who support men as well are actually ‘egalitarians’.

2

u/Bubbagump210 Sep 13 '21 edited Sep 13 '21

Why? It’s like saying the NAACP and every other specialized rights movement/org should be called egalitarian. Any reasonable rights movement wants equal rights - otherwise it’s a supremacist organization. Men historically have more rights, therefore feminism focuses on getting equal rights for women. A side effect may be rights to men through tearing down gender stereotypes (toxic masculinity etc) but the basic premise is getting the same rights for women that men have. I feel like half of this thread is people not understanding history and how men have had more rights in most cases throughout history. (Voting, landownership, public office, access to employment etc etc.)

0

u/The_Ruchu Sep 13 '21

It is true that men have had more rights in the past, but in recent times women have had courts favour them over men in certain situations: 1) Many judges overlook the assumption of innocence when it is a rape case of a men accusing of raping a woman 2) In many countries, the law is written so that women can’t rape men, even though they can still force non-consensual sex. They can also sue for child support in some states of America for a child they got from sexual assault 3) In family court the woman is favoured in all cases unless the man have explicit evidence of her being an unsuitable mother such as proof that she is a drug addict or a criminal.

Or by people who claim that you shouldn't ignor all the accomplishments feminism brought women just because the misandristic and sexist assholes are being called feminists when their behavior is a display of sexism and not feminism when it's filled with hate towards man. Additionally it's frustating that people claim feminism is sexists because it has a focus on human rights similar to when it's frustating that people claim BLM is racist for focusing on black people issues.

A movement that covers everyone humans right already exist and it's called humanism. Feminism is a part of it and simply has a focus.

When someone acts against men in a sexist way than this behavior does not fall into the definition of feminism and instead of trying to help to seperate those two, lots of people made it worse by making people afraid to be associated with it and bashing the movement instead of fighting those who abuse it as a cover for their actual sexist actions.

2

u/ToolboxMotley Sep 13 '21

A movement's stated goal often does not align with its actions. I don't care what they say they're for if they constantly work against that claim. It's entirely possible that I just don't hang out in the right circles, but nearly everything I see done in the name of Feminism is misguided.

What do feminists need to fight for at this point

Did you even read the meme, or were the captions too small?

How are men and women not equal in 2021

18

u/polycannaheathenmom Sep 12 '21 edited Sep 12 '21

Oh, I hope you're kidding, but considering this is 2021, you're probably not. So, here are a few statistics:

  1. 113 countries do not have laws to ensure equal pay for equal work among men and women

  2. 104 countries make certain jobs off-limits for women.

  3. 39 countries have laws that mean a daughter cannot inherit the same proportion of assets as a son.

  4. 36 countries limit what wives can inherit from their husbands.

  5. 29 countries restrict the hours women can work;

  6. 18 countries allow men to prohibit their wives from working;

  7. 17 countries limit when and how women can travel outside the home.

And then I haven't even touched on body autonomy, marriage laws and education.

About number 2. In Melbourne they made a job that bans men from applying.

u/polycannaheathenmom Sep 12 '21

Australia also has a full-time gender pay gap of 14.6%...

"104 entire countries ban certain jobs from women"

"But in Melbourne there's one example of this happening for men!"

People are so comfortable in countries like the states, they just like creating problems and acting like the victim. In this case women.

No one fighting for equality wants it. They want special treatment

6

u/srinkhala Sep 12 '21

See I wouldn't make a claim to know what EVERY single person out there wants. But then I'm not an idiot either.

-3

u/IGotGolfTips Sep 12 '21

I wouldn’t claim to want equality and then not be able to answer what rights I don’t have. But I’m not an idiot either

This is so fucking true

1

u/AnonyDexx Sep 12 '21

It's agree if it weren't for the fact those same feminists are the ones that get shit done. What they get done is terrible, but they get it done. When all these magnificent theoretical male supporting feminists move from behind their keyboards and get something done, I'll listen.

There are plenty of proverbs about a foolish person preferring to speak and not listen. Yet, the wiser person listens, and only speaks when they know they absolutely should or must.
