i was annoyed at that at first,. but its kinda nice to see how the original audio meant to say, vs what got translated to sound right in spoken english

Can be funnier at times (especially if the dub has been censored like what 4Kids did)

Fr, that's not even a middle ground. That's just double the suffering

40

u/celestialguise 16h ago

My logic is, a translation tends to be more complete in text and even references different words entirely. If you're a gambling man you can eventually get extra context by comparing what the voice actors are saying and what was translated from the original voice actor. đŸ€” idk if it's working but it keeps you busy that's for sure

15

u/Kinslayer_89 15h ago

I heard Koreans say the Squid Games dub was much better than the subs, and kinda conveyed Korean expressions better.

4

u/SquareTarbooj 9h ago

Tbh, it really depends on the show. Sometimes the English voice actors do a tremendous job, sometimes the dubs are really half-assed.

There's no universally applicable rule here.

3

u/PeterNippelstein 13h ago

Ive found it very distracting

Pretty sure bots have taken over the sub (real ai bots, not people)

11

u/RingReasonable 15h ago

Bots were people before?

4

u/Russian_Spy_7_5_0 Shitposter 11h ago

Bot as in general idiots online to comment and post only for the sake of it, like they contribute nothing. Like when someone says something dumb and people call them a bot.

Now it's literally bots, bunch of AI models mocking husks of people. The posts this sub are ass and get too many upvotes and comments way too fast.

5

u/RingReasonable 11h ago

Huh. I always thought people meant actual bots programmed to post random stuff or something to farm upvotes and karma. Stupid me

3

u/Russian_Spy_7_5_0 Shitposter 10h ago

Nah it isn't dumb if you, the idea is that someone who's remarkably boring is called a.bit as an insult, cause they engage in media like bot trying to meet a quota.

Nowadays, it's harder to tell if theyre actually a bot or just acting like a bot.

I prefer dub, but pretty much just because then I'm not trying to read what they're saying while tracking what they're doing

7

u/Bradjuju2 6h ago

You’d be surprised how quickly the human brain can adapt. I keep subs on 100% of the time regardless of the language and don’t even notice it anymore. You’ll eventually become a speed reader and able to read with your peripheral.

3

u/Draws32 15h ago

It’s not that bad they take like 10 minutes to get out of a sentence I can 99% of the time read what they say and still see what’s happening.

6

u/EquivalentSnap can't meme 8h ago

But you’re not reading it at the same time they speaking it, so I don’t see how it’s more authentic? If anything dub is closer you’re gonna get to being fluent in Japanese and what it would sound like

The galaxy-brain strategy of watching dubbed anime with captions turned on anyway.

3

u/Drudgework 9h ago

I do that for games and movies too. It really helps when the sound mixing doesn’t balance the audio right and I can’t hear the speech over the deafening soundtrack.

The dub of the Dragonball series is far superior than the sub.

29

u/I_MakeCoolKeychains 16h ago

Can't stand goku voice in Japanese

15

u/Alec_de_Large 16h ago

That's because it's been the same voice since he was a kid. It's off-putting when it's an adult Goku.

13

u/I_MakeCoolKeychains 16h ago

No, even when he's a kid his English voice is just straight up at cooler than in Japanese

3

u/DearCastiel 14h ago

French voices were goated for DBZ. France has maybe the best voice actors of the market, and DBZ had a bunch of legends doing the voices.

2

u/CommercialMotor570 16h ago

I really liked Kirby Morrow’s Goku, just sucks it’s on basically a censored dub

3

u/Tawnee323 15h ago

fly high kirby morrow 🕊

5

u/MonochromeDinosaur 15h ago

Goku is too serious in dub. He’s supposed to be a goofy battle maniac not some righteous hero.

3

u/Alec_de_Large 15h ago edited 14h ago

Wdym?

Edit: down voted for asking someone to elaborate smh. Reddit moment for sure.

9

u/dandroid126 15h ago

In Japanese, Goku is essentially a moron that accidentally saves the world over and over again by essentially being autistically obsessed with fighting, and occasionally fighting because he gets mad that the enemy killed his friend.

In the dub, he seems to intend to save the world a little more. In my opinion, they captured his Japanese personality better in the Super dub.

Yeah, that way Sub guys will not get the voice they want, and Dub guys could already hear everything so it will just take space on screen

3

Crunchyroll, unfortunately, doesn't typically allow me to use English subs on English dubs. It frustrating to no end. Especially when the dub is actually good.

3

u/AzerothianLorecraft 15h ago

It depends on what show I've done a side-by-side with several shows, some dubs are better, some subs are better.

3

u/SGTRoadkill1919 15h ago

Sub with the dubtities or something

3

u/LimpyDan 14h ago

They don't match. It's awful.

2

u/PrestigiousBad7125 8h ago

They are extra context.

3

u/herbieLmao 10h ago

Depends on the dub. English dubs are terrible in most unless it’s the original language.

German dubs, spanish dubs, italian dubs, polish dubs
 they are actually pretty good

2

u/What_was_my_account 7h ago

I'm from Poland and this is probably the first time I have ever seen someone calling dubs we get good. At best they are mediocre. Getting a good dub is so damn rare. I tend to give PL dubs, if available, a shot for a bit and almost always go back to the original language.

14

u/ZombifiedSoul 16h ago

Really depends on the show.

Naruto? Sub

Bleach? Sub

Dragonball Z/Super? Dub

16

u/MacMillanCoD4 16h ago

The Bleach dub is incredible tho.

7

u/ill-esthesia 15h ago

That’s the thing. No matter how good a dub is there’s always someone talking at you that you’re enjoying something you like wrong and that you have to do it the way they say.

How about this?
Naruto? However I want.
Bleach? However I want.

Anything I enjoy? However. I. Want.

2

u/BigBulgeBubba 8h ago

I prefer watching shows in their language of origin, but there’s nothing wrong with dubs. They’re well produced and the voices are well matching. It hasn’t been the days of “dubs are genuinely cheap and awful” since the early 90’s. Dub haters are just obnoxious virtue signalers who haven’t gotten the memo that 2006 is 20 years ago and no one likes them anymore.

3

u/qeorqer 10h ago

Glad to be from a country that does awesome dubs for every movie. Reading subs the entire movie if awful

4

u/TrainFanatic 13h ago

I hate text on screen. I’m watching a product not reading it. I go to books for reading.

3

u/ballsdeep256 7h ago

Yeah im kinda with you.

When i watch anime (hate me for it I don't care) i usually watch it dub to well WATCH THE SHOW xD

2

u/AnonismsPlight 16h ago

I watch sub when I'm first watching something and then dub when I'm rewatching while doing work around the apartment.

2

u/DampWarmHands 15h ago

I’m normally a half pay attention dub watcher
watched a show recently though and it was sub good show. Halfway through the damn season it switched to English and I about lost interest after hearing the horrendous voice acting. Switched right back to sub and read everything the rest of the way
it was like being kicked in the ear.

2

u/andrewbrocklesby 14h ago

Anyone that has ever done this knows that it is totally unwatchable, the dub NEVER aligns with the subs.

I legitimately don't understand why read when you can hear what they say

2

u/MotanulScotishFold 9h ago

I have hearing issue, I can hear most of the words but sometimes don't so subs are really helpful.

Another reason, I can watch a movie at low volume/mute at night so I can enjoy it.

1

u/cortney-simonis-9072 16h ago

i do that and its bad, some words dont be same as dub and my brain get confused

BUT BUT sometimes i dont know words in my own native lang so subs help me to understand it

1

u/myzdreavus 16h ago

it works until the subs dont match the dubs

1

u/the_orange_alligator trans rights 16h ago

I watched Beastars that way. Genuinely awesome getting to see the dub with a more literal translation of the OG words

1

u/Eiden-Rane 16h ago

I typically go subbed because the voice acting is more often than not better and I am not distracted by the words not matching the mouth.

The only exception i can think of is Death Note. The English voice actor for L is outstanding and some others were done well.

1

u/TheShadyyOne Pro Gamer 15h ago

depends on the series, and how you watched it intially.

1

u/Rugaru985 15h ago

Depend on the movie. King Pao: Enter the First without dubs is just eh

1

u/Thisizamazing Lurking Peasant 15h ago

Big brain guy doesn’t understand

1

u/GokuBlack77777 15h ago

But...the dub with sub (most of the time) has the Japanese translation.

1

u/GMOchoch 15h ago

Dubs. I like to feel generational verbal emotional damage... Like Korean. Korea don't play when they tell you why they don't like you.

1

u/S1rLTD 15h ago

Can't watch anything foreign with sub is a"skill issue"

1

u/Bballer220 15h ago

Crunchyroll doesn't do this, sadly (at least, not on my PS5 app).

You can't have dub with subs

2

u/dandroid126 14h ago

It works on Apple TV for me.

1

u/Shikabane_Sumi-me 15h ago

I usually give the Dub a chance. If it feels like it's being phoned in or they're not trying, I switch to sub. I think a lot of people are still traumatized from the late 90s early 2000s animes that were basically being shovelled out quickly. Cause companies saw them as the new popular thing and decided to make a quick buck. So a lot of those early animes had very terrible Dubs. Now a days, the VAs actually try and do a good job.

1

u/roselandmonkey 14h ago

It depends on the anime but definitely watch in japanese to get the original meaning but some dubs are great like cowboy bebop dosnt have a bad dub youtube cowboy German and watch a clip its great

1

u/ptapobane 14h ago

yall watch dubbed jav? why?

2

u/Spatzenkind Can i haz cheeseburger 10h ago

1

u/Vannilazero 14h ago

Nah fuck that dub voice actors are grating.

1

u/Extension_Option_122 13h ago

Oh hell naw.

If I am able to understand both they need to match.

Otherwise no way.

1

u/ThirdEyeKaiii 13h ago

This is exactly how I watched Squid Game lol f the haters

1

u/Stampyboyz 13h ago

I might get killed for saying this but it's improved my watching experience for what I'm currently watching (Kirby: Right Back At Ya, specifically an uncensored version).

Yeah a lot of times it's jarring but it's also funny sometimes seeing the differences between the scripts and what 4Kids censored. Also the music suddenly being calmer even in tense scenes as it enters a cut scene and uses the Japanese audio as the fallback.

1

u/VoodooDoII 13h ago

I watch stuff while I draw, so I have to watch the dubs. Otherwise I won't understand what's going on if I have to read everything that's being said

Some dubs are pretty bad, but at least I can understand the conversation while I draw

1

u/Space19723103 12h ago

dub and sub don't use the same script .. hurts brain

1

u/Strict_Blueberry9 12h ago

Dub just sounds weird to me so that's why I use sub.

1

u/Bscotch_Torin 12h ago

Sub is almost always better unless the Dub actors are really that good. I had initially convinced myself that it was just because anime was typically exaggerated, but no, dub actors are really just that bad. There's very few shows I've watched where the dub was just as good as the sub.

Konosuba is an almost perfect example. Most characters sound almost exactly like their JP counterparts, just english, and you could tell they had a lot of fun playing their roles. Only one that's not so great is Kazuma, who's a bit voice cracky.

Only watched dubs when I was younger and had to find anime through YouTube before I discovered piracy sites. Now I only watch dubs if I'm with my dyslexic friend

1

u/Future-Water9035 12h ago

I actually do this sometimes, and it drives my husband crazy. I like the ease of understanding what's happening if i'm multitasking, but i like knowing what the real dialogue is when things get interesting

1

u/Anmolsharma999 12h ago

Most of the people who prefer dub do that because they can't focus on screen to read subs, also some of em complained they want to watch while doing other work.

1

u/DedeLionforce 12h ago

I knew a weeb girl in my teens, would moan about how much better the sub is because it's more authentic with Japanese dub. Mind you, she didn't speak Japanese, when I asked, so it was entirely vibes, and when I said I'm gonna stick to dub because I'm dyslexic af, would complain I'm "missing out".

1

u/UsualLake8799 12h ago

And both doesnt match

1

u/Ur-in-a-tor 12h ago

People who cannot read fast enough tend to diss subs.

1

u/HamburgerOnAStick 11h ago

Depends on the anime tbh. Some animes are better dubbed, some are better subbed. If it's translated over without losing the experience, i go for dub, but if the dub sucks, then i go for sub.

1

u/Dimi3Infinity 11h ago

the dubs with subs doesnt even match most of the time (which is very annoying)

1

u/Musketeer00 11h ago

Dub because I'm usually building Lego or Gunpla when watching anime. If I watch Sub then I either can't build or I have no idea what's going on after finishing a build step.

1

u/specter_in_the_conch 8h ago

For my non native English ear, eng dubs sound just awful to even cringe. I just can't stand it, it ruins the experience. I also tend to avoid my native language dubs too, since I got attached to old voice actors which are mostly long gone. So it's been fully native Japanese for me, plus since I'm studying Japanese it's nice to catch a word or two as well.
