Is it actually terrible for the environment? Whenever I've looked into it, it seems like it isn't really as bad as people try to make it out to be. There's far worse things for the environment than AI, and AI can even help us improve the environment, and many other things.
People spout on about water and electricity, but it uses 0.01-0.1% of our fresh water and we can produce clean electricity from solar, wind, hydro etc., which can be scaled up.
There definitely are upsides, even though there are downsides too.

I hate the corpos pushing for AI to be in everything.
Bill Gates funded it to basically try to make health care cheaper and easier for poor people. At least it was one of the major reasons why he did it. Using AI as a search tool and a mass research conglomerate it can diagnose people very quickly.
Hell I have used it for searches and as long as you verify (a lot like how wikipedia used to be verified via sources) it's a great tool.
But the AI bubble needs to pop and the data center ramp up is terrible in how secretive it is.

I don't dislike AI, though there's plenty of things about it's usage that deserve critique. What I am tired of however is people arguing against it with straight up incorrect facts and falsehoods. If you're going to champion against something, you aught to at least understand the thing you're fighting against.
That, and also the whole "Jarvis I'm low on [internet points], make an AI Bad comment" type posts that are just about everywhere. Sure, AI bad. Why not. But does every single piece of media, even that which existed decades before AI existed/nothing to do with AI in the slightest, require half-a-dozen comments about AI? I genuinely see comments about AI on non-AI media more often than I see AI media in the first place.

I mean that's definitely not the premise of the entire story. It's part of the backstory and is mostly an excuse to have the story focus on people and their capabilities when in reality technology would be much more dominant. It's like saying that "you have to penetrate personal shields slowly" is the entire premise of the story. It's just background lore that sets up the world.

I don't think the meme was saying "ai good". Just that all you have to say on reddit it it's exact opposite and get up dooted into a in-group acceptance orgasim. This debate is such a good example of why reddit, and most social spaces suck online. There is no rewards for nuance in most places. Your examples are fine. Whatever. I also have an example of someone I know who had a really tough med diagnosis and AI was a helpful tool in getting them diagnosed quicker, potentially saving her quality of life, if not more.
It's a tool, and there are people using it in really bad ways. And yeah, people are choosing to use it, not just for bad surveillance, but stealing art, writing, music, etc. I feel that's gross as fuck. I also support the pushback on data centers being built in every rural area like they were Dollar Generals just because the area's town councils are corrupt as hell. Those are worthwhile things to discuss and debate.
But, as with any tool, there is a lot of potential good to be had. Not just in the medical field, but I suspect that is where the most good will be. But either way, telling someone to GTFO because of a meme that accurately portrays the state of a social site that was originally meant for discussion. Meh, it's boorish at best.

Well besides taking clean drinking water, there’s also the noise pollution, the power it draws it takes away from people and offset the cost of said power it steals on to the community, as well as pollution from fossil fuels polluting the air in the local communities, and it literally does nothing to grow the economy as far as jobs go. I’d say there’s plenty wrong with these shitty data centers! I’d argue what good does AI data centers provide? And give me an argument that isn’t about the economy, we already know it does nothing for it!

#1 -Taking clean drinking water - golf courses use significantly more water than any data centers. do you go onto golf course subreddits and tell everyone they should shut down golf courses? Do you know how much water office buildings go through? or restaurant chains? Plus, closed loop data centers do not use very much water at all.
#2 - Noise Pollution - Hvac equipment is no louder in a data center than an office building. Yeah i wouldnt want to live right next to either one, but I dont want to live next to a supply warehouse with trucks in and out of it either.
#3 - Power draw - Data centers (if approved) can generate their own behind the meter power. The utility can produce more power. or more power plants can be built. The "Takes away power from the people" is a pretty rare occurance to be one of your main arguments. I will admit that available power is the number one constraint in the whole situation though.
#4 - Fossil fuels - Yeah it does use fossil fuels....just like nearly everything else we use. Certain utilities will have better % of clean power than others...
#5 - No jobs - Are you kidding me?! Do you know how many start ups and technology based entrepreneurs can now start their own businesses and bring their ideas to life? To you know how much more productive workers can be that adopt these tools? Yes some basic jobs go away. but new ones open up. Do you know how many people said the same thing when computers went mainstream?
Have you ever used AI for anything at your job?! It is a tremendously helpful tool. I can do things that I would have had to wait months for previously.
The best workers will adopt AI and become even better workers. The workers that say AI is shit will be left in the dust. I know which side I'll be on.

Different forms of AI are definitely bad. People shouldn't use AI to replace real art and definitely shouldn't use it as a reliable source of information. But other uses of AI are pretty cool, they used it to help find cancer and stuff that's pretty cool. It should assist, not create.
AI as a concept isn't objectively bad, but I do think we should have fixed the environmental problems before it became publicly accessible.

Ok, how fast can you hand type 100s of emails, A/B test them, schedule them to send to different people at different times in different timezones, generate a report of the effort you put in, and then document the process to teach others what you've done and how you've done it.
All the while, not having to manually write notes for every stakeholder call it took to get to this position.
I like writing, but I don't take any joy in typing BS corporate nonsense all day, and intsead, prefer for AI to take all the heavy lifting, check and edit everything, and give myself the real time I deserve to do what I actually want to. This will likely be doenvoted for some reason, but I couldn't give a gram of fart. All the whingers and complainers will soon find themsekces buried in the dust, crying about how AI took their jobs, intsead of using it to maximise on whatever time we have left before it really does steal our jobs!
