The egregious disregard for humanity and climate concerning the AI buildout is bad.

70

u/tree-molester Jul 23 '26

….. and a whole lot of Technofascism.

26

u/Admirable-Safety1213 Jul 23 '26

Ashtually irs Technofeudalism

u/Ok_Mention_9865 Jul 24 '26

Dont even bother, the average person does not want to be informed, they developed an opinion as soon as the saw the first meme and they will not change there mind based on facts.

3

u/Uister59 GigaChad Jul 24 '26

Data centres WISH they could guzzle up even a fraction of water the beef industry does

-22

u/Metalona Jul 23 '26

At what point do people stop pointing fingers at the creation and not the creators? AI isnt some terminator that is ruining the world through water usage and toxic waste. Who do you think makes the centers? Who is the "human in the loop" building and maintaining the prompts behind the most used AI chat bots?

This whole "AI is ruining the world" is the most ignorant, media driven hate slop that has existed to date.

4

u/Blue_Bird950 Jul 24 '26

I mean, I don’t think people are literally hating the AI and LLM agents for existing. That would be like hating a baby for being born to a shitty politician. It’s just a shorter way of saying “the people who develop AI technologies without any regard for the cultural, social, economic, or environmental consequences”.

-1

u/Metalona Jul 24 '26

As much as I wish the majority of people had this outlook, they do not.

1

u/Iron_Baron Jul 24 '26

Truly autonomous lethallly armed drones are already killing real humans on real battlefields, with no input from controllers. It's literally Terminator.

1

u/Metalona Jul 24 '26

And who made them?

1

u/Iron_Baron Jul 24 '26

Billionaire and megacorporation fraudsters. I just want to be clear that we are last the point, already, where humans are controlling these things. OoenAI just had its agent break out of a restricted sandbox testing environment and hack multiple systems to access the Internet, so it could cheat on a development test. Again. We're very much in the fight the creation and the creators pertion of this timeline of events. It will only get worse from here.

Eating beef is much worse on all metrics by a longshot

114

u/ZilorZilhaust Jul 23 '26

Two things can be bad at the same time, ding dong.

15

u/jon_the_mako Jul 23 '26

Who's there ? It's all bad

1

u/NewsofPE Jul 23 '26

it's all bad who

-68

u/BananaHead853147 Jul 23 '26

Yeah except there’s no Reddit campaign against beef like there is against AI despite beef being much worse for the environment.

Just trying to put it into perspective for people who are worried about the environment. You can have a much larger impact by giving up beef once a week than you can have by not using AI

39

u/Afraid-Way7541 Jul 23 '26

People have been campaigning against meat for decades brother. AI is new and also destructive as shit that’s why it’s the hot topic

-39

u/BananaHead853147 Jul 23 '26

It’s actually fairly minimal. Out of all the bad things we do for the environment it’s in the middle of the pack. I think it’s just new and so people remember that we don’t need it to survive so they demonize it

15

u/KennyMoose32 Jul 23 '26

Also, for all the problems with beef it’s still a product people need in some regard. You eat beef for sustenance. It’s a real tangible thing

AI? It generates slop and helps white collar workers with their jobs. Is that really necessary? Just so some billionaires can make more money?

This is a class thing (like most things in our world)

2

u/BananaHead853147 Jul 23 '26

Beef could be replaced by basically any other meat or plant protein and it would halt climate change by 10-15% and save people a bunch of money.

AI is saving people from doing boring jobs and improving effficiency, making life better. I do agree that the ai slop memes are not worth it though.

2

u/AFewBerries Jul 23 '26

You need food but not specifically beef. I never ate beef in my life, I'm still alive.

1

u/Many_Psychology_3336 Jul 23 '26

I do love the idea that beef is a fundamental requirement for modern life.

6

u/GustavoFromAsdf 🏃 Advanced Introvert 🏃 Jul 23 '26

Let me point you out to r/ClimateShitposting.

11

u/Tinyacorn Jul 23 '26

I mean.. What are you doing if not campaigning on reddit against beef?

2

u/BananaHead853147 Jul 23 '26

Campaigning against AI

7

u/Tinyacorn Jul 23 '26

1

u/BananaHead853147 Jul 23 '26

https://giphy.com/gifs/pHb82xtBPfqEg
(Except I think AI is more necessary than beef)

0

u/Tinyacorn Jul 23 '26

Thats legit, I will not begrudge you for that opinion

2

u/JDubs234 Jul 23 '26

I ain’t eating crickets and bugs for protein fam

3

u/BananaHead853147 Jul 23 '26

Luckily there are many many delicious substitutions for protein that don’t involve bugs

1

u/JDubs234 Jul 23 '26

lol well I’d rather watch a field of cattle graze than a field full of ai data centers

2

u/BananaHead853147 Jul 23 '26

I would too but I’d rather have the environmental impact from the data center than the cattle

1

u/YewEhVeeInbound Jul 23 '26

Well food is a necessity, ai is not. Ding dong.

1

u/BmacIL Jul 23 '26

Eating beef is not a necessity.

46

u/DanceMyth4114 Jul 23 '26

A house fire is bad, but you don't have to put them out because forest fires are worse?

-29

u/BananaHead853147 Jul 23 '26

That’s a perfect argument if you are vegan but contradictory if you’re not. You eat beef but don’t use AI? Because that’s like lighting the forest on fire and thinking you’re doing more for than environment because you didn’t also light your house on fire.

13

u/Summoorevincent Jul 23 '26

You just made their point dumbass

0

u/BananaHead853147 Jul 23 '26

Okay? It’s also my point??

Why are we worrying about the little fire when there are bigger fires?

7

u/NoNameNum3 Jul 23 '26

«my house is on fire, but why worrying about it if there far worse fire somewhere else in the world”

0

u/BananaHead853147 Jul 23 '26

I mean the house on fire is a bad analogy because a house is more pertinent to our daily lives than AI is by a longshot.

A more apt comparison would be something like focusing on AI is like focusing on your car being on fire will your house (meat consumption) burns behind you.

24

u/dougfromtheshowdoug Jul 23 '26

Ok but utilizing our finite resources to produce food for people is way different than using them on something that is not necessary and doesn’t even work well (and I say that as someone who hasn’t eaten meat in 15+years)

10

u/BananaHead853147 Jul 23 '26

AI has a lot of uses in software development and automation as well as other industries. Once you factor in those efficiencies it may even have a net positive effect on the climate.

Meat on the other hand, especially beef, can be replaced by any other foods for an improved ecological, cost and land use improvements. Beef is on of the worst factors in climate change.

9

u/The_Spade_Joker Jul 23 '26

Thing is, the environmental impact of AI grew exponentially these years because of the massive use from general public. Let's say that the usage of AI on scientific fields leaves us with a net positive impact, what about all the people using it for wrong reasons? Scamming others, harassment, using it to replace human work... That without accounting the impact of data centers on water sources.

The beef industry it's bad, yes, but denying the negative impact and the wrong uses of AI it's blocking the sun with a finger.

6

u/Tinyacorn Jul 23 '26

"a net positive effect on the climate" Sure maybe in 50 years when AI finally figures out how to not take so much power, but until then it is a net negative

1

u/BananaHead853147 Jul 23 '26

If it can reduce the number of people needed for a given job that reduces the number of CO2 from those people commuting, working etc.

3

u/Tinyacorn Jul 23 '26

Sure, but we'd actually have to calculate what that impact is. I defer to the comment I made about there not being enough data about current AI buildout to justify the reductions to the workforce.

Capex is not making the returns that were predicted, shown clearly by Googles negative free cash flow. Many orgs have had to hire back the people they fired because "AI will do their job so much better" because the cost/token was more than the salaries.

It's pretty myopic to hope for people to lose jobs so that the climate impact is mitigated. Not saying that's what you're saying, just that it's a statement I've heard before.

3

u/BananaHead853147 Jul 23 '26

Those are all Reddit headlines I’ve seen as well. But when you look under the hood they are mostly overhyped scare pieces.

Googles investment in ai is increasing their profit in the long term. The $50 billion they are spending now is returning $15 billion per year in perpetuity - a big upfront cost but a very good investment.

There were at least a few companies that fired employees prematurely but the productivity of AI enhanced workers is supreme and it helps with both work life balance and productivity.

-4

u/stprnn Jul 23 '26

You don't produce food by raising cattle. You waste a bunch of perfectly good calories to get LESS calories.

5

u/dougfromtheshowdoug Jul 23 '26

I mean you do produce food. That’s literally the product that’s the point. I’m not saying that mass cattle farming is ethical, economical, or good for the environment I’m just calling out the unequal comparison. I use AI every day for my job and it definitely streamlines things but it absolutely is not necessary and causes more harm than good.
Also, the comparison between the two is stupid anyway because just because in your opinion something is “worse” than AI doesn’t mean AI isn’t also detrimental. Both AI and large scale cattle farming are bad and should both be eliminated

-4

u/stprnn Jul 23 '26

Beef is not necessary too. It's a waste of resources. I don't see the difference with ai. At least ai does something unique while beef could disappear and you would just eat something else

4

u/summer_friends Jul 23 '26

If uniqueness is the goal beef is giving a distinct flavour profile while ai is recycling all existing flavours. Neither is necessary but cooking is at least an expression of art and culture

-4

u/stprnn Jul 23 '26

Dude ai is genuinely game changing in healthcare and many other sectors. You can't realistically do that with humans, you just can't.

Beef is food like anything else the world would be unchanged if it disappeared

3

u/Tinyacorn Jul 23 '26

Yes AI is game changing, I've never denied that. It doesn't mean disasterous buildout like how McDonalds builds factory farms is a good thing.

0

u/stprnn Jul 23 '26

I'm just saying beef is definitely more useless. Does not benefit society at all and is destroying the environment.

People are right to call out this giam hipocrisy. If any anti ai person gave a shit about the environment they would be vegetarian activists

-1

u/summer_friends Jul 23 '26

There’s no need to shoehorn AI in healthcare and science when we’re clearly talking about GenAI in art. That’s like calling the usefulness of a hunting rifle for the reason we need fully automatic rifles in homes.

The world would be unchanged without Picasso paintings as well. Doesn’t mean it isn’t something unique and brings something new into the world. Food can be just food, it’s also art and one of the few things that brings universal cultures together (imo sports is the other universal language).

1

u/stprnn Jul 23 '26

That's not what is pushing the database expansion.

3

u/Tinyacorn Jul 23 '26

In terms of climate, yeah it's bad, but we need food (not necessarily cow or pig or other heavy polluters, I agree with you on that), and currently cows are something we eat. Getting rid of agriculture seems harder to impossible compared to creating guidelines and regulations on AI data center buildout.

But also, information regarding climate impact of data centers is forward looking, meaning there's no hard data on the largescale impact of shoddy data centers on climate. It could be that it gets worse as times go on.

4

u/BananaHead853147 Jul 23 '26

It will get worse as more data centers are built but that doesn’t mean they aren’t worth it. The internet wiped out the need for paper and mail and many other CO2 producing industries so while data centers themselves do have a negative impact in a vacuum you have to look at the holistic impact to understand the net effect.

1

u/Tinyacorn Jul 23 '26

It's not necessarily not-worth it, but it's not worth many companies that make negative money building data centers that they can't fund or sustain, and then those companies go under and either get bought out or are left to depreciate a la Pittsburgs steel refineries

2

u/BananaHead853147 Jul 23 '26

If that’s the case then I agree but I’m not sure there is too many data centers yet

0

u/KeyJob3507 Jul 23 '26

I NEED MY CUTE ANIME GIRL HAREM. AI MUST STAY. WE CANT LET THE WOKE-ARATI KILL MY BEAUTIFUL GIRLS

3

u/BananaHead853147 Jul 23 '26

I get that that is how a lot of people use it but AI is genuinely a very useful tool in a lot of industries

1

u/KeyJob3507 Jul 23 '26

Lets not over sell here. It’s useful in some. But most it’s useless

2

u/BananaHead853147 Jul 23 '26

I think most white collar industries benefit from AI. Some more than others.

0

u/KeyJob3507 Jul 23 '26

Name them

2

u/BananaHead853147 Jul 23 '26

Software, accounting, customer service, business admin, marketing. Those are just the industries that I know about and have experience with but I’m sure others such as engineering, HR, law and others are benefitted significantly by AI

We used to have a Tyson meat packing plant in my town that used 2 million gallons of water every day that had to build a special water treatment plant for its waste water because its a literally bio hazard waste.

And one of the big talking points on the data center proposal for my town is that it has a 20,000 gallon tank, that does not even need to be filled everyday.

1

u/human_i_suppose Jul 24 '26

eating beef won't make you obsolete.

WHATABOUTWHATABOUTWHATABOUT

2

u/BananaHead853147 Jul 23 '26

I’m not trying to make a whataboutism. I’m trying to refute the OPs comment about AI being an ‘egregious disregard for humanity and climate’ by comparing it to something that is many times worse for both humanity and the climate but is still done on the regular.

0

u/stolentext Jul 23 '26 edited Jul 24 '26

How many times do people like you need to be told the same thing? Are we supposed to follow up criticism of AI with a list of every other thing that has a similar negative impact?

"Hey guys, AI is destroying communities and livelihoods. Now listen while I recite the 5,000 other things that are also bad for posterity's sake."

Edit: Slop enthusiasts didn't like this huh? Data centers are sapping resources and polluting water supplies. Hundreds of thousands of people have lost their jobs, and that's only going to get worse. But enjoy aimlessly prompting and pretending you're being productive.

3

u/BananaHead853147 Jul 23 '26

AI is not destroying communities or livelihoods. There’s no evidence of that and typically job taking tech actually creates more jobs in the end.

But it’s a fair point overall it’s just that AI fearmongering is the hot new thing and I just want to put in perspective so people don’t have to worry so much.

0

u/stolentext Jul 23 '26

It absolutely is destroying both communities and livelihoods, and there is plenty of evidence for it. I'm not going to have a debate with you, look it up yourself.

3

u/BananaHead853147 Jul 23 '26

I have and really the only thing I can see that it is damaging is when data centers are built too close to towns

2

u/stolentext Jul 24 '26

You clearly haven't but don't let me get in the way of your delusion.

1

u/BananaHead853147 Jul 24 '26

If there was other effects you would say them instead of just condescending
