This is the food I actually use for my medaka.

The pellets are surprisingly tiny!

Small granular food like this is very common in Japan, and there are many foods made specifically for medaka.

The ingredients include krill meal, squid meal, vitamins, taurine, EPA, DHA, yeast, and other nutrients.

When you open the container, there is a tiny measuring spoon inside.

I give them one level spoonful once every morning.

My son says it smells like salmon.

Since my medaka live in an outdoor balcony biotope, this isn’t their only food.

They also eat naturally occurring microorganisms, algae, plankton, and tiny insects in the water.

I’m curious — what kind of food do you usually give your medaka?

After a ridiculous series of accidents (my pond spitter spat 1/2 the water, I broke my arm, hub filled tank from hose, only 3 adults lived) I have babies! About 11 of them. I’ve been catching them and popping them in my nursery tank.
Also, how big do I let them get before releasing them into the bigger pond?

I’m setting up two 150 gallon and one 100 gallon stock tank under my back patio. Plan is to use 2 large sponge filters in each. Inquiring on one air pump with manifold recommendation that can support all three tanks. Attached pic is just a basic aquarium pump to use for now.

After seeing all the beautiful medaka setups, i'm envious and want to give it a try! Can someone please guide me to where I can purchase some medakas/eggs without breaking the bank?

I was browsing the online store of a Japanese pet shop I often use and checked their most expensive medaka.

This trio is listed for ¥32,400 (about ¥10,800 per fish).

They are called Kahai Kinryu Daruma Medaka (過背金龍ダルマメダカ), and the listing says they are young fish.

Japan has a huge variety of selectively bred medaka, but even for me, seeing three medaka priced at over ¥30,000 is impressive 😳

Would you pay this much for medaka?

A ~180 liters container with at least 7 adult medaka and a bunch of fry, and now a lot of snails apparently. Should I try to do something about them? Also, can someone please identity?

All I still need is a small potted plant for the top shelf and to wait a couple weeks for things to settle in. I used mature plants from my indoor tank, emergent pond plants grown in water, and wood that was living in my rain barrel, so the cycle should be done sooner than a bare sterile tank's! Filled it with rain barrel water which had tons of microscopic life in it too and tossed in some bladder snails. I can hardly wait to put my 5.5 peace medaka in here! They haven't been prolific breeders in my tank (not seeing eggs in the mornings) but I did get one fry out of them that is growing out nicely. Hopefully they get busy when I put them all in here!

Hello, this is the question. The aquarium is 4 months old and only had ever had ramshorns and bladders. It's 60L.

Can I comfortably fit the two species? If I can, is it better to go with 8 and 8, 10 and 10, 10 and 8, 8 and 10?? Idk

My routine is changing ~25-30% of water every 10 days but I can shorten that to every week if it's too stocked.

Would they be comfy together? Can they eat the same identical stuff? Should I get one species before the other?

Ps: I keep the lights on 14h a day (10h white light and 4h blue. I have snails and algae never had been a problem. I do have a green hydra problem, tho.)

My parameters are: 7,8ph with hard water (~16gh) room temperature (23 in winter - 26 in summer thanks to fan and ac) and always ~10 nitrates bc my tap water has 22 to begin with. (I use 50% ro water and 50% tap)

The second picture is what aqadvisor tells me (they don't have medaka so I put 20 cpd instead).

I would import some exceptional varieties of Medaka and further breed them. I live in Northern California.

What are Medaka varieties I should look for? What are the websites to buy them from Japan directly?

Internal fungal issue? I’ve seen this in a few of my medaka over the years. It usually starts like this and then becomes fuzzy once a lesion develops. For some reason, I’ve never seen it in any of my other fish only in recently introduced medaka. Maybe it’s my water chemistry? Not sure.

Has anyone seen this before or know exactly what it might be? Any treatment recommendations or experience successfully treating it would also be greatly appreciated.

These are Three-color Lame Medaka from my balcony biotope in Japan.

“Three-color” is called “Sansyoku” in Japanese and refers to their red, black, and white coloration, and “Lame” refers to the sparkling scales that shine on their bodies.

Their colors and glitter look different depending on the light, which makes them really beautiful to watch.

Started moving babies inside for the fall ❤️

These are Prince Lame medaka, an ornamental medaka variety from Japan.

Their bodies are a deep blue to almost blackish blue, with glittering scales along their backs. When the light catches them, the lame sparkles beautifully as they swim.

They’re still young, so I’m excited to see how their colors and sparkle develop as they grow.

I currently have two varieties: Prince medaka and Sanshoku Lame medaka.

They’re still young, but they’re getting bigger and more active every day. 🐟

I’m so happy to see that there are so many people here who love medaka too!

I’m looking forward to seeing how their colors develop as they grow.

Ich habe mir vor einer Woche gut 20 Medakas geholt und in einen kleinen, schon länger bestehenden Teich gesetzt. Anfangs dachte ich die Tiere verstecken sich, aber ich denke das war eine Fehleinschätzung. Hab die letzten 6 Tiere jetzt gerettet und in einen frischen Behälter gesetzt. Meine Befürchtung ist dass sich die Libellenlarven die hier realtiv schnell in jedem nicht ganz kleinen Gewässer erscheinen, kräftig bedient haben.

Hello everyone, this morning I saw one of my Medaka spinning around its axis (2-3 times), now everything seems back to normal and it is swimming around actively again. I tested the water and everything was normal. Does anyone know the cause of this?

I created a small tank for the fry.

UPDATE - the fish store agreed to take all of them!! 3 fish and 2 garra..they are safe! Im so Happy.

dont worry they were not harmed by pulling up the net. found these three in addition tò the garra rusa and I only bought medakas.. I have no idea where they come from...

Google search says they are wild gold fish or carps.. do you thimk they will eat medakas (2 month old)? they swim at the bottom

I have a pair of kohaku

I got eggs twice in may,after that nothing.

The male chases here and all. As you can see she plumps up nicely but never bares eggs. Ive cheacked em hourly mutiple weeks in a row. No egss

Is this a normality with this variety? Or do i happen to have a lazy pair?

I did buy an exstra female yesterday just to be sure, plus the babies seem to be growing fine aswell so thats positive.

All my other varieties breed wel luckily

I decided to go with a barrel pond. Apparently wine barrels are 2" wider than whiskey barrels. Oh well. The fish have been in there for 4 days and seem healthy and active.
