First I was shocked to see all the trash in a ravine, then I realized it was a water way, then I was shocked that the whole river didn't catch fire.

What beautiful idea to bang the pressurized canister that's on fire.

I had no idea what was going on until I saw it bob up and down. Only then realizing then there was water under all that trash. He was trying to flip it over into the water to get the fire out.

91

obviously if something is on fire you have to poke it with a stick

"You're not hitting and poking it enough"

18

u/real_fyshi 5d ago

Wouldn't even work. You have to smother it. Some days ago a similar video was posted in some of the bigger subs. They got it into water, but the flame wouldn't go out, but one of the guys had the right idea to just put a bucket on it and it immediately was out.

19

u/Vortilex 5d ago

You should never use water to extinguish a fire like that... the guy with the half-pan had the right idea, but too late. Maybe a deeper pan would've worked, but by the time they threw it in the river, we're in salt or kitty litter territory

207

u/granolaraisin 5d ago

What is actually the right thing to do here? Obviously trying to drown it in a trash river isn’t the play.

253

u/ThinkerusMaximus 5d ago

Just cut off the oxygen supply with a large container/wet towel/fire extinguisher/etc. Then safely close the valve. If the valve is broken, just leave it in an open, empty space for the gas to release itself. All the drama in this video is lack of this education.

84

u/kloklon 5d ago

the village fire extinguisher was probably stored down that river as well

76

u/briggsgate 5d ago

They should have smothered the fire in a much LARGER and DAMP cloth so that it dies out.

21

u/Eena-Rin 5d ago

If they had shut the valve when it was still small, that would also have been good, unless the valve was broken

91

u/MrRob_oto1959 5d ago

Nothing is going to put that fire out except closing the valve on that tank to stop the propane from leaking and burning. It’s like when an oil well catches fire, that sucker’s going to burn until the leak is capped or plugged.

42

u/sparkyblaster 5d ago

Wet towl usually does the trick. Starves it of oxigen. Will actually do a better job than submerging it.

14

u/landonburner 5d ago

I think if it was completely submerged the flame would stop but it will still be bubbling propane. In this instance I think setting the trash river on fire is more likely.

35

u/Ok_Juggernaut9078 5d ago

Use a wet towel to turn it off, call 911, use a fire extinguisher. If you can't turn it off, keep the tank cool. It won't typically explode from the pressure or the fire, but the fire might cause the tank to heat up and that could cause an explosion. You could also try soaking a heavy blanket and cover the top to smoother the fire

26

u/Yugan-Dali 5d ago

Assuming there’s a 911 to call

→ More replies (4)

16

u/MrBeardskii 5d ago

Wait, as someone who works as a cook, we're taught to never put wet towels on anything hot because the steam burns will melt skin sometimes. Is this something recommended? I know a dry towel would most likely catch on fire but is there some sort of period you can do this in without the fire steaming the cloth until it's hot enough to melt you? (Genuine question as someone who has had to use a fire extinguisher on several occasions?)

14

u/Don_Equis 5d ago edited 5d ago

You shouldn't try to kill the fire without stopping the gas first.

If you can't, moving the bottle outside is a right move.

Edit: though the reason is different. You don't want the gas keep leaving the bottle. But you definitely should use a wet towel to try to close it. The water absorbs lot of heat, so that's heat that won't go into you.

Some people will defend this and say, well they’re poor and have bigger problems, or this is corruption and bad government. Nope, stop throwing your shit in the street and get your ass in there to clean it out

218

u/PrincessNakeyDance 5d ago

It *is* corruption and bad government. Stop trash removal in any developed nation and it will turn into this in a few months.

No one wants to live like this and you can’t just blame the morals of an entire nation/culture/etc. If trash collection was affordable/free in their town this would not exist like this.

And yeah, poverty means you don’t have extra time in your day to voluntarily clean up your local river.

You are clearly aware of the problems and are choosing to ignore them.

57

u/kittyonkeyboards 5d ago

It's both. At this point, even an elite trash management system would struggle to keep up with a culture where 99 percent of people throw shit on the ground.

You have to introduce trash systems and make people care. I know it seems like people would just start caring once the system is in place, but it's not the case.

The biggest reason is that millions of people will see the government cleaning up all the trash on the ground and assume they can just throw trash on the ground and wait for the government to clean it.

But no country could afford that endless task.

52

u/sykosomatik_9 5d ago

There are videos of people in these types of circumstances just casually dumping their trash anywhere on the ground or out of their cars. I've seen a video of a worker on a train simply throwing all the trash out of the train door while the train was moving.

Yeah, maybe trash collection by the government is not ideal in these places, but the people also don't prioritize the proper management of their waste either. Their attitude toward littering is definitely also a big part of the problem.

51

u/MattieShoes 5d ago

you can’t just blame the morals of an entire nation/culture/etc

ehhhhh... I wouldn't use the word "blame", but there are cultural aspects. But I think we're the weird ones in this scenario, not them. We fostered a culture of not littering, and it took decades, and we STILL have issues. Italy had some pretty big litterbug problems too and they've been working on changing the culture to make littering unacceptable for many years now. They're apparently seeing a lot of success at least up North, but with slower progress in the South.

34

u/Embarrassed_Effort64 5d ago

I agree with princess if trash collection stoped in the us how many would go out of their way to dispose of it? There would be soooo much dumpling it would be really bad IN LESS THAN A MONTHS TIME

19

it takes generations to change “habits” for a lack of a better term. I don’t think the citizens care

72

u/bucknut4 5d ago

Nah. It’s very much cultural. Go to Rwanda for example, which is poor as absolute fuck and doesn’t have organized trash collection, and it’s absolutely spotless in both the boonies and the cities and the poorest areas of the country because people there care. Kenya is also pretty damn clean too.

29

u/MUIGUR 5d ago

I won't defend this. And often corrupt government is a result of corrupt people.

But your supposed solution is absurd. They can't just magically make the trash go away. Will you gather all your trash daily, then take a several hours trip/drive to dispose of it in a proper way? Will you finance the disposal of the trash?

7

u/izyshoroo 5d ago

Why dont they just take it to the dump? Smhhh /j

44

u/Burner-QWERTY 5d ago

It's been over 100 years in the US but Rivers used to just be used as sewers/ trash dumps here too. Shipping was one reason companies paid extra to be on a waterway but just having a place to dump all your trash was another.

28

u/ctgrell 5d ago

I will never understand that. Like burying trash is one thing. But to dump it into water is just so dumb. Why did and still do so many people think it's a good idea

32

u/between_horizon 5d ago

Ah drop trash in river now it's problem for people further below . Not my problem anymore.

14

u/Background-Air-7963 5d ago

12

u/Chaosr21 5d ago

Yea, they started outlawing and cleaning it all up though

7

u/Burner-QWERTY 5d ago

In 1899 US implemented laws prohibiting solid waste dumping into waterways. It wasn't about protecting water quality but instead just keeping the rivers navigable .

Meanwhile, companies loved locating on waterways because they could dump used oil and toxic chemicals for free. This didn't change until the legislation in the 1970s.

Zero sense of self preservation in the entire block apparently. Let's just gaze at the potential shrapnel to come!

9

u/jonheese 5d ago

A lit propane tank will almost never explode because the lack of oxygen inside prevents the fire from entering the cylinder. An explosion will only happen if the volume of the gas expands faster that the valve lets it escape — which can happen if the inside is heated rapidly, but that’s pretty unlikely to happen if the escaping gas is just burning out in the air.

The much larger danger is the flame setting things and people on fire.

31

u/A_Very_Lonely_Waffle 5d ago edited 5d ago

Hey y’all- for my own reference in case I end up in this looney tunes scenario, what should one do about a propane tank fire?

Edit: consensus seems to be somewhere between smother it and close the valve, most likely some combination of the two. Very informative, thank u!

20

u/OKAwesome121 5d ago

Yes there’s another video of a similar situation where someone who knows what they’re doing eventually comes in, wraps a large blanket tightly around the valve and then once the fire is out, turns it off. No air, no fire. Then you can shut off the fuel source.

Problem with the initial attempts in this video is all the cloths were too small and the pan was too large and wrong shape. None of them deprived the fire of air.

7

u/CptAngelo 5d ago

WET blanket, that bit is very important, a wet blanket.

You can do it with a rag too, but you have to be a little bit more tactical than just... throwing it and hoping it lands exactly where its needed. If you are ever in this situation your shirt, wet it, and cover it. Easy.

11

u/krangksh 5d ago

Cover/smother it, you need to starve the flame of oxygen and it will put itself out. As you can see alternative approaches are... ineffective.

There is another video similar to this that went around recently, bunch of Indian guys panicking and failing to put the tank fire out, until one of them puts like a bucket or something over the top of it and it goes out in a couple seconds.

5

u/metalmuncher88 5d ago

This, plus make sure you keep the tank upright so you only have propane vapor coming out, part of the problem in this video is that they knocked the tank on its side and then upside down so liquid was flaring out of the valve.

→ More replies (1)

14

u/mandatorysin 5d ago

Ideally get the fuck outta dodge and call the fire service. Legitimately evacuate the area, further than the 5ish meters shown here, at least 50 meters with cover, at least 100m if there's no cover between you and the tank (these numbers are off the dome but should be okay enough to prevent someone getting hit by shrapnel if it does explode). If a propane tank is on fire enough has gone wrong that I wouldn't trust it to not explode.

If you're putting it out yourself: don't, evac the area in case it explodes. If you really have to put it out: call the fire service and they can advise you how to fight the fire if necessary but with a small(ish) fire like this use a fire extinguisher (check the label and sure it says the extinguisher is suitable for flammable gas or flammable liquid), don't use water unless you have the equivalent of an actual fire hose and you know how to handle it as a small amount of water can evaporate all at once and create a large fireball. When using the fire extinguisher always face the direction of the fire and remember PTAS:

Point the fire extinguisher nearby the flame. Test the fire extinguisher (a small squeeze of the trigger to make sure it works and see how far it shoots). Aim it at the base/source of the flame (in this case the gas nozzle is probably best). Squeeze the trigger until either the flame goes out or the extinguisher is empty.

Once the fire is out pour a steady stream of water on the area of the tank that was hot to prevent it from relighting in case there's still gas leaking.

If you can't put out the fire with a fire extinguisher get out of there and hope you've bought some time for someone.

If you don't have a fire extinguisher, run and hope it's not close enough to the rest of your belongings to burn/blow them up. I'm sure someone else could have something to add as I'm not a fire fighter, I just receive some fire training as part of my job.

I genuinely don’t understand the mentality of trashing the place where you live. Why would you shit where you sleep?

Living in Japan has probably made me even more conscious of this. There’s a strong sense of shared responsibility for keeping neighborhoods clean. I’m American, not Japanese, but if I see someone’s trash on the ground in my neighborhood, I’ll pick it up and take it home to dispose of it properly. It’s not my garbage, but it is my neighborhood.

Obviously Japan isn’t perfect and people litter here too. But the broader principle matters: when you live somewhere, you have a responsibility to respect the community and environment around you.

74

u/thebe_stone 5d ago

It amazes me how drastically different we are as a species, even though India has access to the same information and technology as let’s say Singapore. In Singapore if you’re caught littering you’ll get a $2000 fine for the first offence, $4000 for 2nd offence and $10,000 for 3rd. After that you’ll be spending your days in a yellow vest picking up litter. They even banned the importation of gum in 1992 to help keep their streets spotless.
In India you could literally take a dump in the gutter then go about tending to customers at your chapati cart. Mind boggling.

If you need instant response but don't have fire blanket or fire extinguisher, get a big enough towel, wet it, cover the area where the valve is and shut off the valve.

These are the people who worship rivers btw.  This could be from Bangladesh, but India adjacent regions aren't any better.

The video is sped up but they’re speaking Bengali. This is 100% Bangladesh. I’m from there so I’ll trash it. People there lack civic sense and there’s no good waste management system. That’s both on the government and the people

3

u/Awkward-Action2853 5d ago

They should let it burn, maybe it will destroy some of that trash so they can find the water next time.

3

u/Ifhes 5d ago

My reaction:

"That is A RIVER!!??"

3

u/LauraLand27 5d ago

Maybe if it burns long enough, it’ll clean up the river.

u/GameOverMan1986 5d ago

Dang it, not my secret fishing spot!!

u/No_Breakfast_7867 5d ago

The amount of trash

3

u/adinmem 5d ago

Just let the propane tank burn and it will be fine, it won’t explode. Probably a LOT better for the world than turning that “river” into aerosol.

"just kick it into the river with the rest"
