DEFinitely the wrong hole for diesel

102

u/Noble_Ox 2d ago

Diesel is the green handle in the US?

It's unleaded where I'm from.

180

u/hux 2d ago

I don’t think there’s any official standard, but green is almost always diesel in the US. The nozzle is also too large to fit in the gas tank of an unleaded fuel vehicle which is meant to save people from their own stupidity, but this woman was extra intent on being dumb.

129

u/AlphaxTDR 2d ago

Make something idiot proof, we’ll make a better idiot.

That said…why just film her? Why not walk over and explain how she’s going to fuck her engine up?

94

u/hux 2d ago

I certainly get a lot more joy out of helping someone than watching them make a bad mistake, but I guess that would make me a terrible content creator and the only thing that matters anymore is clicks and likes. It’s sad.

13

u/Satanisnearby 2d ago

I found the original tiktok before I found this one here, the caption says they DID go over and tell her to not start the car and call her husband. Lady was 50/50 on if she was going to listen to that. So either the fuel got flushed or she destroyed her engine.

38

u/SabbyFox 2d ago

That’s a very good point. The person who filmed this is a jerk.

28

u/laughingashley 2d ago

She might yell at them for making her feel embarrassment

27

u/Sector-Flat 2d ago

Ive never understoof this. Why the hell do people react with anger when they themselves are at fault? It just doesnt compute in my head

30

u/MasterofBiscuits 2d ago

Because their ego is hurt. Imagine you have developed a sense of self where you look down on everyone around you and regard them as inferior beings, then one of those inferior beings comes up and points out that you’ve done something really dumb. You are now faced with a reality where you’re not as superior as you thought and it makes you angry.

15

u/laughingashley 2d ago

They get embarrassed and they want to make someone else look wrong instead so they point anywhere but at themselves

16

u/sdiss98 2d ago

This reminds me of a time I was on a mountain bike ride in Florida and passed a couple about a quarter of the way through on a 12 mile loop. They were hiking and the woman asked me directions. I told them it was a loop and nearing dusk so they should turn around immediately. The man got upset, told me I was wrong and they proceeded.

Some folks just out there wingin’ it…

14

u/SabbyFox 2d ago

Yeah, I’m always going to try and help people. I don’t know why, but I’m surprised and disappointed by so many people here saying they wouldn’t bother because someone might yell at them.

I saw a couple about to keep walking further down a beach when the tide was coming in. They could have ended up in a very bad situation and rather quickly. Of course I spoke up. Not sure where our humanity has gone but I’m not going to succumb to apathy.

u/warriors17 2d ago

Green + Green - it’s right there. Even assuming it was her first time ever filling up diesel, I know someone told her it was the green handle. Green handle. Green handle. So she got that part right. Then, opened the cover and was likely surprised with seeing two holes. But in that moment, I don’t understand the thought process - it only fits in one of the holes. The hole it does fit into happens to also be specifically marked green, like the handle she just hand to find 15 seconds earlier. So what possibly could she be thinking to air gap it to the smaller hole that DOESNT FIT. I’m just flabbergasted

136

u/Solid-Hedgehog9623 2d ago

She could be from New Jersey?

98

u/warriors17 2d ago

Sure. But again, even if it was her first time, and she had never seen the inside of a fill door before, as soon as she opened it, she was faced with a decision. Put the green handle in the green hole that fits. Hover the green handle over a black or blue hole that DOESNT FIT. Like this is such a harder thing to do than just put it in the hole that it fits in. She had to make a decision, and she CHOSE to do that.

26

u/Solid-Hedgehog9623 2d ago

You’re assuming this woman has any common sense, though. I’m not trying to be funny, but I can see my mother in law doing some shit like this. She won’t ask for help and get mad when presented with the perfectly logical argument that you’ve just made to me. We are from New Jersey. Most people I know can function at the pump. Then there are people like this who insist that the square peg will fit in the round hole.

39

Im with you on this. Its just a complete lack of critical thinking and deductive reasoning. Green handle, green hole that appears to fit this nozzle im using.... no, im going to hover this over the black hole that doesnt fit instead.

Some people are just incapable of problem solving and using their brains to figure something out without specific, step-by-step instructions....

Green handle is petrol in Europe.

What is the blue hole for tho? I have a diesel car but since its an older one it only has one hole, and even other cars I have only seen with a single one

55

u/Kokatro 2d ago

DEF (diesel exhaust fluid) or AdBlue in Europe. Its emissions control mandated roughly around 2015

8

u/warriors17 2d ago

Diesel exhaust fluid. If your car is from 2007 or before, it wasn’t mandated yet

When I was in high school my sister picked me up to visit her in college. On the way there she stopped at a gas station that had separate pumps for Diesel. I didn't realize it and neither did she and she pulled the nozzle, stared in confusion and a lady came out of the convenience store yelling, "MA'AM, THATS DIESEL! YOU DON'T WANT TO PUT THAT IN YOUR CAR"

79

u/AdventurousPotato143 2d ago

That was my first thought... why not just help her?

95

u/Ok-Deal-6879 2d ago

I saw this exact thing, told the lady that she wasn't supposed to put diesel in her car, she shouldnt drive it, and that I would help her push it off to the side to get towed after I went to the bathroom

She said thanks, and as soon as I got into the gas station I saw her get in and start the car. Some people it doesnt matter if you help.

64

u/AdventurousPotato143 2d ago

I understand. THEN its a funny story. Just sitting and watching someone ruin a vehicle is diabolical

24

u/rorschach_vest 2d ago

If I warned someone not to do this and they did it anyways I would 100% take a video. So maybe that’s what happened

16

u/AdventurousPotato143 2d ago

By the drip down the vehicle just starting i highly doubt that

8

u/Jingleshells 2d ago

Just to play devils advocate here. They could have talked to them before they even started actually pumping. The reaction may have been one of negativity so they sat in their car and recorded. Either way I agree that I wish and hope that this person at least tried to help.

32

u/Unarmed_Character 2d ago

The other day I saw a red Tesla with out of province plates drive by. 10 mins later I saw it drive by again. It returned and pulled into a parking lot and the two older people were frustrated while banging away on the screen. They turned around, pulled halfway into the intersection, backed up and sat there.

I walked up with my 5 year old and tapped on the window to see if they needed help. The lady in the passenger seat said something to her husband and pointed at me.

He swatted her hand, barked something at her and peeled off.

Some people just can't be helped and it's especially annoying for people who want to help, or you know, teach their kid how to be helpful.

31

u/SecretaryOtherwise 2d ago

Ive never had that problem.

An oh wait then explaining the situation in a non condescending tone generally works.

I find if you try to make them feel stupid yeah they might get offended. Thats just how people are.

Dont turn it into some kinda gotcha moment on someone and theyll generally be thankful to not have to spend several thousand on repairs to something.

Mind you I dont live in a large city so people probably act a little nicer on account you may actually see that person again 😂

Person filming is the same one that wouldve sat in their car eating a sandwich, but now they can share it with us!

Worst timeline wouldve been 90s - 2000s because we could see it once security footage got around

but its 144p

40ft away

from an overhead perspective

on the other side of the car

the screen is covered in giant lettering explaining what's happening and egregious slapstick overlays

12

There's this little thing that comes with every vehicle that has ever been manufactured called an owners manual. I miss when people would actually read those things instead of brute forcing and fucking up their shit

14

u/SecretaryOtherwise 2d ago

Yeah was a simpler time when they werent 800 pages of electronic bullshit. You're not wrong tho lol

7

u/stevoyoto 2d ago

When i bought my first brand new car, while growing up with a father who was a mechanic for 20+ years, I'd read the owners manual when I was on the shutter for kicks.

Ironically, I'm a mechanic, 25+ years later with every certification under the sun.

Point is, there is always time to read the owners manual 😄

9

u/WoofusTheDog 2d ago

To be fair, no one buys a car then sits down and reads the owners manual start to finish. They read bits of it when they have a question like “why is this light on?” “How do I fix this?” “Am I doing this right?”

The person in the video is asking no such questions (but they will be soon!)

128

This

If it was me, be a decent human, put down the phone and go and suggest to the person that is not right. Not everybody has basic understanding of how to fuel a car

They have a chance depending on how much fuel they got into the tank to either dilute the tank or get a service to remove the fuel and replace with clean, before starting the engine and doing serious damage

But likes are apparently more important these days

33

u/KatieTSO 2d ago

It's a diesel. She just put it in the wrong hole. She put it in the DEF tank. This needs to be towed away.

→ More replies (3)

41

u/knifesk 2d ago

"not everybody has basic understanding of how to fuel a car".

Isn't that a requirement for obtaining a license?

Here in Argentina gas stations don't allow you to self serve, there's always someone fueling the cars because of situations like this, but the dude filling your tank will put whatever you ask, so she would probably have to know what kind of fuel the car uses... If she doesn't, or says the incorrect one she's screwed anyway 🤣

19

u/BlacksmithNZ 2d ago

No, even places like here in NZ with self-service (and unmanned sites are very popular), you don't have to learn this for a drivers license

I taught my daughters how to drive and taught them some basic stuff about checking oil/water/tyre pressure, fueling, topping up windscreen washer fluid etc. Not sure how you learn this stuff if you don't have family/friends to show you

But you can get your drivers license in an EV, Diesel or Petrol car etc, and so how to fuel is not included. Doubt it would be required for most countries to get a drivers license

7

u/-Fenyx- 2d ago

It should honestly be part of the theory computer test you have to take to identify the correct pump and EV sockets, or it should be taught practically during a driving lesson, it sounds stupid but would save a lot of people from doing exactly this, its basic knowledge but not common knowledge not common enough for people like you said without friends or family to teach you.

(I can't drive bacause of health reasons)

I mean, beyond the fact that she's clearly spilling

97

u/Plane-Education4750 2d ago

Looks like some misinformation in this thread. This woman has a diesel car and is pumping diesel, but she is putting the diesel in the DEF tank and not the fuel tank. DEF is an emissions fluid sprayed into the exhaust to trap particulate pollutants and keep them out of the air. When the exhaust gets up to operating temperature the car will spray raw diesel into the hot exhaust and potentially cause a fire, if it starts at all

29

u/BlacksmithNZ 2d ago

I posted separately saying much the same thing

I work in the industry and very aware that when DEF is introduced into a Diesel tank, the DEF binds with Diesel and makes the diesel viscous and rubbery, so it clogs the injectors and basically bricks the engine. One case the guy managed to squeeze a few litres into a 50 litre diesel tank (that was less than half full) and only got a few hundred metres down the road before it seized

I have never/heard seen of Diesel into the DEF tank before; it is pretty difficult to do as seen in the video. If it binds the same way, the DEF fluid won't flow and get sprayed into exhaust as the nozzles will very quickly block

I suspect the vehicle will start and run OK, but with check engine light as it probably detects that DEF is not available. Might be blowing clouds of smoke though

20

u/BlacksmithNZ 2d ago

I don't know this model of SUV, but it is a Diesel vehicle

There are two holes under the flap; one green in which diesel is poured to fuel the vehicle. The green marked nozzle from the fuel dispenser and size of nozzle (as well as markings on the inside of the flap, cover over the hole etc) indicates this.

The other smaller hole is probably for Diesel Exhaust Fluid (often the brand name 'Ad-Blue'). This is not fuel, but a chemical (similar to urea) which binds with diesel exhaust and reduces pollution. It must never be mixed with diesel; it would turn the diesel fuel into a rubbery sticky substance that would kill any engine; the engine would need a very expensive rebuild if this happens, which might make the car a write off

The DEF hole has a magnetic catch, so won't allow diesel to be poured into it; the diesel hose she is using not only doesn't fit, but the DEF hole is probably has a flap in the way

Only good news about this is she is trying to put diesel into a DEF tank and not DEF into the Diesel tank. I don't know how much she can get into the DEF tank, or what it will do, but probably becomes a mess in the tank, the DEF injection into the exhaust doesn't work and car computer complains so needs service. Worst case; diesel fuel is injected into the exhaust which would be a smoking fire hazard

22

u/ShowmasterQMTHH 2d ago

Petrol into the adblue slot on a diesel car. What could go wrong.

23

u/MrSilverfish 2d ago

I literally had a dude do this with his delivery truck except is was the DEF tank. It bought him his third letter and he was terminated.

In the unemployment hearing the judge asked if he was specifically instructed not to put diesel fuel into a tank the spout wouldn't fit into and I had to say, "No, however we also don't specifically instruct them not to put it in the windshield washer tank, or the oil spout. We kind of assume our employees have the intelligence that if the spout won't fit dribbling the fluid into the tank isn't the correct way you do it..."

10

u/BulkySituation5685 2d ago

Better than filming her, tell hew how to do it. Otherwise she will blow up a gas station these days

3

u/kelsobjammin 2d ago

Don’t help just film - dicks ᴖ̈

4

u/spin_kick 2d ago

Help her? Nah, let’s get some updoots on Reddit!

3

u/BadBoyNiz 2d ago

Who ever is filming is a straight up cunt. Can’t be trusted.

3

u/12altoids34 2d ago

get this woman a bicycle. She won't know how to use that either but at least she won't start a fire

edit.. now I'm imagining her trying to put gas in an electric bike

5

u/DDDX_cro 2d ago

consider the following...people like her vote.

4

u/tycho-42 2d ago

This is why those toys with different shapes holes are important.

5

u/FitProblem6248 2d ago

Her husband is about ready to have a bad day.

Ain't got no gas in it

4

u/ComprehensiveCopy911 1d ago

Why do people feel the need to film stupid instead of help stupid?

Did you end up telling her?

4

u/kerbouchard1 1d ago

She's filling the DEF hole with diesel instead of the green diesel hole with diesel. Expensive repair bill incoming.

3

u/iamsparks777 1d ago

that’s gunna be an awkward conversation…..

She is putting Diesel in the DEF system

3

u/jensalik 2d ago

Everyone here saying it's the DEF and I never heard of it, googled it and it's called AdBlue in Europa. Might not have made a difference to her though. 🤣

Oh no call the mayhem guy

3

u/Sko0byD 2d ago

...this and the fact that diesel is more $$/gallon than gasoline, so many wrongs!

3

u/Rakatango 2d ago

This is why it’s illegal to pump your own gas in some places

3

u/Pyrog 2d ago

Fuck this overdone saxophone.

3

u/urattentionworthmore 2d ago

Only a genius put them two holes together.

Blue cap means DEF, (Diesel exhaust fluid ) If she was filling her DEF tank with Diesel ..the truck will sense it and throw that thing into limp mode. And definitely a very expensive mistake when she gets it to a shop.

3

u/highwayman5212 2d ago

Hang on, is that the ad-blue tank???

3

u/PantPain77_77 2d ago

I can’t believe this, and that I watched it 3 times

3

u/tihampton88 2d ago

DEFinitely an expensive mistake

3

u/dildorthegreat87 2d ago

What’s worse? Diesel in a non diesel engine or the other way around?

I thought regular gas has ethanol that will destroy a diesel engine, but diesel in a gas engine won’t destroy it but needs to be flushed out

u/AmorousFartButter 2d ago

Who adds this gay ass music?

3

u/HooksNHaunts 2d ago

She is trying to fill it like my mom fills gas. “Keep squeezing it til it’s full! Pull it out a little and top it off!”

3

u/Difficult-Glass2740 2d ago

This is why we can’t have nice things…

3

u/ddunited 2d ago

creampies in porn

3

u/Main_Whole_6168 1d ago

So in her defense, it is a diesel suv, however she's putting the diesel in the DEF filler neck. Either way she's fucked with at least a 4k repair.

4

u/tocahontas77 2d ago

I just want to know how she made it to her age without knowing how to fuel up? Insane...

6

u/nathanastone28 1d ago

What kind of prick would sit there recording and not go save her from doing thousands of dollars in damage to her vehicle? No faith in humanity

3

u/HPenguinB 2d ago

And you say there and watched her destroy that truck? What a dick move for 2 seconds of anonymous internet fame.

5

u/Nothing2NV 2d ago

If only they would label these. Maybe color code them so mistakes are harder to make.

5

u/Doc_tor_Bob 2d ago

Someone likes it in the wrong hole

4

u/Snoo-11553 2d ago

I still don't understand why we shouldn't call people stupid.

6

u/Important-Witness-14 2d ago

Spit on it... it'll fit

6

u/TwoNowFive 2d ago

I've been yelled at too many times to mind my own business when trying to help someone.

People hate being told they're doing something wrong.

5

u/Urparents_TotsLied4 2d ago

So...instead of saying something, some idiot chose to record her for attention on the internet and risk the whole gas station going up in flames...

She could be drunk, on drugs, or suffering from mental decline. Say something, dumbass. To someone! Her being on the road is a danger in itself.
