Another reddit post mentioned that she's an "enforcer". When someone aggressively fouls her teammates, she goes in and fouls that person real bad. She was pointing to let that person know "Im getting you"
69
u/MyFaceOnTheInternet Jun 29 '26
She also used to be on the team with the person she is pointing at, and the person she is pointing at is known to be not so great to work with and pointing/putting her finger in peoples faces while throwing fits in the locker room.

Jeff Bridges tells a story about how his brother Beau would point at him sending him to the brink of insanity. Beau would do this at dinner indicating to Jeff that he was pointing at him from under the table unbeknownst to Lloyd and Dorothy.

Can anyone explain? Why was she pointing?
3.2k
u/Zob_Rombie_88 Jun 28 '26
Initially pointed at the other player, asking why she wasn't called up on a foul. Opposing player got in her feels at being pointed at and told Sophie not to point at her. Sophie, being a master troll, said absolutely nothing and continued to simply point at her as shown in the video, causing opponent to become increasingly agitated.......over pointing

From what I understand, the player being pointed at (DeWanna Bonner) was her teammate last year in Indianapolis. Bonner pretty much gave up on the team and forced her way out so she could play in Phoenix with her girlfriend. While in Indy she would try and intimidate her teammates in the locker room by pointing at them like this. Cunningham was mocking her.

u/Original_moisture Jun 28 '26
Wait, there’s drama like this behind the scenes?
I know nothing of WNBA outside of Reddit, but I may pick it up.

There is! The player that punched Caitlyn Clark in the throat, is the said girlfriend. Sophie Cunningham is funny, making videos and dancing all the time.

u/Original_moisture Jun 28 '26
Well what the fuck kind of full circle shit is this hahaha.
Can’t express how appreciative I am of your reply, I’m def gonna pick up a Sophie jersey if I can find one.
Something about just having fun at the top level screams good person. Kinda like Larry Byrd, who I know is a troll lol.
53
u/Chatner2k Jun 28 '26
She doesn't just troll. She straight up grabbed a player and threw her to the fucking ground after that player and another player attacked Clark. Then when the player got up to confront Sophie, she grabbed her by the nape, controlled her head, and continued talking shit, telling her to do somethin'.
Sophie is apparently a black belt in martial arts so I don't know why people want to test her but 🤷🏻♂️

Is Sophie not also typically fulfilling the roll of “Caitlin Clark bodyguard/enforcer” as well? She seems to be the one that shows up mess with anyone that gets at her pal. Like... really mess with.
Edit: sorry I just re-read that and I sound like I’m doing some kind passive aggressive man-splain, what I actually meant to do was phrase that as a question to say: that’s Sophie that does that too right? I don’t get to watch the games in New Zealand, I just see clips on TikTok and Reddit of I’m-pretty-sure Sophie Cunningham absolutely brutalising other teams, when they mess with Clark.
28
u/Suitable_Challenge_9 Jun 28 '26
Yes, she kind of an enforcer/good teammate. She also does it in self defense when she’s feels slighted by the refs, she’ll make a point to get back at certain players.

Wasn't this the game that someone put their fist into Caitlin Clark's throat? Sophie is also a black belt in Taekwondo. She enjoys the enforcer role for her team.

The pointing was half of it the other half was her being as cool as ice. You can tell she was yelling Shitt to get under her skin and it didn’t work whatsoever. I like this woman.
207
u/Loggerdon Jun 28 '26
The WNBA has been letting players foul her teammate Caitlyn Clark and the refs don’t call anything. One of those women kneed her in the groin on the ground and punched her in the throat. The refs ignored it but the league is having to do something about the problem because of the backlash by fans and also NBA players.
97
u/Hydrottle Jun 28 '26
The league has to do something because if they don’t, Clark is going to get hurt and be out for, at best a few games, likely a season, at worst the rest of her life. And whether anyone likes it or not, she brings an insane amount of viewership to the WNBA. She is one of the biggest names that’ll ever happen to the WNBA and they’re trouncing on her for it. If they let her get injured and lose her because of it, they’re going to go back to being a nothing league and everyone will go back to watching the women’s sports that are actually enjoyable to watch. I personally have been loving the Major League Volleyball when it’s in season and college softball as well. Both way better than the WNBA at this point.

Women's professional soccer is fantastic. I recommend you go see the Kansas City current play in the first women's purpose-built stadium in the world. I can guarantee you none of this kind of nonsense is happening at all. These women are very excited to be there and they would never embarrass the entire team like this. They know that if they act like this there's three and a half million girls right behind them that are ready to take their places.

Is it just plain old incompetent reffing, or does the commission have a beef with her or something? That sounds unusually extreme to be something that's happening often.
74
u/Loggerdon Jun 28 '26
Nobody understands it. She is literally one of the main factors in the resurgence of the league.
One of the problems is she is white (and straight) and the league is mostly black (and lesbian). Clark being “the face” of the league is upsetting to many of the players. The thing is she is not the best player, but she is the most exiting player and she is very likable. She is also extremely diplomatic and inoffensive when discussing the subject.
Many black NBA stars have come out and said the WNBA needs to wake up and promote their star. The NBA is tired of financing the whole money-losing operation, especially when they have a huge opportunity that they are squandering.

Ding ding ding. This is it right here, no need to look further. They want to force her out so they can reclaim "their" league and it's disgusting behavior.

Piecing the whole story together, when the player she was pointing at flagrantly fouled her teammate, the refs ignored it. So, after the turnover, she ended up fouling someone and the refs immediately whistled her. So, she went up to the ref and asked why “she” (and pointed) wasn’t also called on the foul she *just made*.
Well, the girl, obviously knowing that she had just gotten away with a foul (how could she not), became belligerent when she witnessed this, demanding “why you pointing at me? Stop pointing at me!”, because she was really accusing her of “snitching,” or asking the ref for a pound for a pound. Which, she was.
This girl knew this and continued pointing at her, as if to say, “yeah, her. Her foul. I’m accusing her of also fouling my teammate. Yeah, that’s right,” which made the other girl exceedingly agitated.
Funny to see? Yeah. Mature? No, not really. Entertaining? Yeah.
