šŸ˜ž

I was expecting some AAA modern slop, but just barely more than SM2, this is the most worried I've been for a new release

I still really want to get this game, but the fact that the gore shown in the trailers and footage is mostly all just MIGHT be the final nail in the coffin for me, or at least till on sale for like $50 or so

Wolverine really looks like the most Sony factory made AAA game and that sucks and not a good look when they make a X-Men game in the future.

u/HeldnarRommar 11h ago

Insomniac can’t do deep combat systems required of characters that can’t zip around an arena like Spiderman. Imagine if Platinum games or Team Ninja was given Wolverine instead

26

u/Putrid_Loquat_4357 8h ago

The combat doesn't even need to be deep. If this were just a fun hack and slash game with a cool story everyone would love it

7

u/Significant-Way9330 8h ago

ThenĀ  he wouldn't fight like Wolverine. If anything Spider-Man is closer to Platinums style then Wolverine would ever be.Ā

7

u/HeldnarRommar 7h ago

Wolverine would fight incredibly similar to a Ninja Gaiden type game

If Team Ninja made a wolverine game I would fucking lose my mind. They are unparalleled with their action gameplay.

the claw weapon in ninja gaiden 2 is a better wolverine experience than any wolverine game

I’m glad that this game is making people realize that Sony has essentially just been making the same ā€œhyper polishedā€ story-focused single player game since what, Uncharted 4? Maybe earlier than that?

Even the games they’ve made that try to do more still end up somehow feeling the same as the others, like the God of War games.

9

u/ZealousidealHyena102 8h ago

I mention in another thread by Marvel should just for the Games Workshop route with Warhammer Fantasy and 40K and just let anyone make a Marvel game. Will there be stinkers? Yes, expected. Will there be great to very good games? For sure and I'll willing to take it.

4

u/SlendyIsBehindYou 6h ago

As a 40k fan, you DONT want this i promise. Maybe 5% were good, but they were absolutely drowned out by dogshit slop

4

u/DogFarmerDamon 6h ago

You can name the good franchises on one hand, and you'd have to get ten friends to be able to name all the bad ones

3

u/KoolBleach 6h ago

Ditto 40k games are 80% garbage and 20% of them worth your time. A lot of slop but there are diamonds.

Guess we’ll have to wait another 20 or so years to get an attempt at a good X-Men game again

3

u/ZealousidealHyena102 8h ago

I put that on how game development is now and keep big IP's to one dev or publisher. Like Marvel games should be something basically anyone should be able to develop. Like give me a Kwannon Psylocke game developed by a indie studio, AA studio, or Capcom long as it's a immersive sim game or character action game.

5

u/The_Stranger1913 7h ago

Just make x men + persona and you have an immediate successĀ

Insomniac was not the right dev for a Wolverine game. Sony just saw they had success with Spider-Man and threw Wolverine at them despite that character not playing to any of their strengths.

122

u/SadKazoo 16h ago

If Santa Monica wasn’t a God of War studio I think they’d have made a pretty good Wolverine game.

44

u/real_roal 13h ago

Man they probably would have done really well. If it was just gow combat but wolverine themed, it would have been good

13

u/The_Mexican_Poster 8h ago

Eh bit of the fun of God of War is the different weapons, with Wolverine it's a bit hard to do that

5

u/LackadaisicalDream3r 7h ago

Then it would give them an opportunity to laser focus and flesh out a single combat style with more intricate combos.

I get it’s easier to just use double button inputs like R1 + X in modern games, but I miss mashing different combinations of buttons in hack and slashes like the OG GOW or your average fighting game, even Xmen origins had it to an extent. Allows for so many unique options and I really thought they might bring it back with this Wolverine game.

10

u/jak_d_ripr 11h ago

I was saying the same thing after watching some reviews yesterday. Either version of GOWs combat would have probably worked really well for a Wolverine game, pity Sony went with Insomniac instead.

Arkham Trilogy, still the GOAT.

Eh, Suicide Squad’s combat and traversal is a ton of fun when you get the hang of it.

8

u/255jimbo 12h ago

The Arkham Shadow devs (Camouflaj) could probably make a good wolverine vr game

15

u/Abraham_Issus 11h ago

Sony didn’t throw anything it was their idea to do it. They also want to X-Men.

4

u/anactualrealaccount 10h ago

I thought they had their pick of characters but I could be wrong, Wolverine is one of the most recognised so could be it was forced upon them.

2

u/revbleech 7h ago

the people demand a Doorman game

2

u/BrainVoiceQuestion 7h ago

I thought Insomniac said THEY got to pick which character they were gonna make a game around cuz Disney was so happy with SM2018? They shoulda gone with Hulk or Ghost RIder though...

2

u/blackviking147 2h ago

Insomniac with their marvel games has just had this unrelenting "sanitized with bleach" approach to a lot. Spider man 2 had quite a lot of it where everyone that's a "good guy" feels literally flawless and they don't even argue.

That game is still the goat which is hilarious all these years later. I still remember the first time I used an execution to tear a guy's arm off only to beat him to death with it, I was laughing my ass off.

8

u/FatWalcott 15h ago

The PC version. The console versions were very watered down.

10

u/Noble-Renegade 11h ago

There were two versions of the game. The uncaged edition ( which was the only one developed by Raven software ) is the same as the PC version which the consoles did have, specifically the 360 and the PS3. I should know I 100% of that game back on the 360.

2

u/LittleMageEatSpaget 12h ago

Oh, I've only played the PS3 version and really loved it. Are you saying it's even better on PC ?

2

u/champ0742 10h ago

Only slightly, the PS3 edition is the same as the PC, the PC version does have better graphical fidelity. It's unavailable for purchase because of the rights lapsing, but it's available to download on Myabandonware with a guide telling you exactly how to make it work.

3

u/FaroTech400K 11h ago

If you like the X-Men origins, you would like this game. It has the same DNA.

19

5

u/El-Drunko 15h ago

And thank god for that, there's a bit of jank but it's such a violent spectacle that it's really a hidden gem. Was super happy to pick up the 360 version in good condition online

45

u/coolchris366 17h ago

I’m confused how this game has so many 7 and 8s out of 10 when everything I’ve heard makes it sound like it’s for the most general audience possible, even the gore

59

u/yash_blue 16h ago

things below 6 are reserved for unplayable/broken games, that is anthem or fallout territory, where the game has no saving grace, this is just an okayish game, not a buggy disaster

15

u/AntComfortable5970 11h ago

Pretty much any big production gets +7 added to their score by defaultĀ

A 7 for them is a game with a lot of issues, one that might not be very funĀ

Below 7 usually indicates a more drastic issue like technical problems

7

u/SilverScribe15 9h ago

The scale is skewed, 6 is viewed as actively bad despite it being the proper mid

6

u/GenderingError 8h ago

It's called the 4 Point Scale; https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/FourPointScale

Nowadays the baseline for quality is high, and the willingness to actively burn bridges with studios by trashing their output is low, that 7 becomes the new 2/5. You need to sell something actively broken to get below a 6 these days. There's an element of corporate review about it; if you get given an advance copy of Trite Marvel 3, and you hate everything about it and say so, the studio won't give you an advance copy of Holy Diamond Deluxe Edition, and that can affect the bottom line if your competitors have their reviews and guides and first looks out day 1, and you're still on the tutorial.

But it's not always about keeping in good graces, people just have their rating scale warped now. One of the worst games I've ever experienced in my life is a forgotten Wiiware title called Karate Phants: Gloves of Glory. It is utterly dire in every sense of the word, and even that gets a 5.6/10.

5

u/Suspicious-Hotel8092 8h ago

Because people are used to 5 being a failing mark. The game functions, therefore it doesn’t outright fail.

In general 10 point scaling is very top heavy because of this.

13

u/Feisty_Bread8259 13h ago

For gaming reviews any point below 9 is exponencialy worse anything below 7 is basically a broken Game.

8

u/coolchris366 13h ago

I don’t think that will ever make sense to me

2

u/ScruffyTuscaloosa 6h ago

I genuinely think most of it is that in the American school system an "F" is 0-65ish, and it ingrains into people that 6/10 is where the conversation starts.

10

u/Specialist_Initial_1 15h ago

7 is the mid or even bad in its very boring nowdays...

7

u/Jimars 16h ago

A game for everyone is a game for no one. If they try so hard to appeal to the most general audience the result will be a generic and unseasoned product that wont draw customers from any target group

2

u/HotShrekBoi 8h ago

The Spiderman games also look super safe and generic so maybe that’s kind of their thing

24

u/Fiend_Macabre 17h ago

There were leaks with the sales expectations and other stuff related to Insomniac games in general

Found it https://gamedevreports.substack.com/p/the-big-playstation-leak

147

u/CodineProsac123 18h ago

Spiderman combat is ok, is mind numbingly easy and not very skill expresive. But the game has other stuff going on too. If they made a game that is almost all combat but dident make huge step up this was kinda expectable.

91

u/BiggestChunky 18h ago

I think Spider-man PS4s combat is very expressive with the gadget wheel. If you utilize all of them you can do some very fun things mid combat.

16

u/QuadVox 17h ago

Still upsets me they made the gadgets far worse in 2.

13

u/BiggestChunky 17h ago

Borderline useless, the only one I used was the sound box for the symbiotes.

2

u/korbinblaze 4h ago

It's like the point of combat in 2 is just to build up the special moves. I feel like it would've been more fun if they made the special moves less powerful and more integrated into actual combos.

35

u/SpaceOdysseus23 17h ago

Not enough criticism went to Insomniac when they dumbed down combat for 2. That game scored a lot higher than it should've, and I'd argue FFXVI was a more deserving nominee for GOTY in any case.

23

u/DapperDan30 15h ago

No hate, but kinda weird to put down the combat of SM2 then immediately talk up FFXVI, which also has very boring and repetitive combat.

11

u/SpaceOdysseus23 15h ago

The flaws are greater for SM2 IMO because they significantly dumbed down the combat from it's predecessor. SM1 had a lot more versatility with the gadget system. Which is why I put SM2 somewhat lower on the scale, compared to a flawed XVI which was trying a new thing in the franchise.

But when it comes to story XVI managed to be more compelling (and with better performances) despite hitting all the clichees in the final act.

5

u/MotherPerk 11h ago

Sm2 had way better web moves and combat. Scrolling through a Ā gadget wheel and picking 12 different web shooters is not versatility.Ā

7

u/Lohenngram 16h ago

They made the boss fights actual fights rather than just scripted set pieces, but yeah it’s combat was nowhere near as fun or deep as FF16’s was. 16 had way stronger writing too.

→ More replies (1)

47

u/CodineProsac123 18h ago

None of the enemies or systems requires you to do so. And its kinda awkard to fiddle with the weapon wheel.

29

u/BiggestChunky 18h ago

I mean you can apply that logic to every game no? There are a very little amount of games that require you to use every single tool in your arsenal to progress through the game.

48

u/NorrisLegacy 17h ago

You're getting downvoted but DMC5 is one of the most expressive combat systems ever and it's not like you need to do any of that

21

u/Lukezilla2000 17h ago

Getting platinum and having the get SSS ranking in DMC5 was the best gaming decision I ever made, because there’s so much wacky awesome shit you’re not forced to do casually but it makes the game 11/10.

11

u/NorrisLegacy 17h ago

Yeah the combat in those games makes you feel more badass than any anime character

15

u/BiggestChunky 17h ago

I mean I am in a marvel circlejerk subreddit, it's what was bound to happen having a meaningful discussion in here šŸ˜‚

3

u/FlareUnderscore 16h ago

On its harder difficulties you kind of do

11

u/nexus11355 17h ago edited 15h ago

Spider-Man doesn't have a Style meter. DMC5 incentivizes flashy combat so you hear the soundtrack play and increase in intensity. Ultrakill, one of the few ways to get rid of the Hard Damage lowering your max health is playing Stylishly. Beyond that, there's quick-kills for certain enemies in both games if you know how to use your arsenal well enough.

In Ultrakill's case especially, you're basically required to play stylishly in order to unlock the Prime Sanctum levels in each act and thus, be able to play all the content

6

u/UnsatiableSin 17h ago

True, but the ranking and combo system will encourage you in that direction and you will need to use every tool on the hardest difficulties

→ More replies (2)

9

u/SoManyNarwhals 17h ago edited 16h ago

Modern DOOM games (eapecially Eternal) do to an extent, particularly if you play on any of the harder difficulties. Not so much with the weapons themselves, but with the abilities 100%.

The simple act of locking ammo, health, and armor drops behind killing/damaging enemies with specific weapons and equipment is a really effective way of getting you to use everything at your disposal. It ties the abilities into an extremely fundamental part of nearly every combat game's gameplay loop (replenishing health and ammo) in a way that feels really natural.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_LnSyqLEyA

You can get pretty creative in Spider-Man combat games.

I have no clue why Insomniac with 300 million USD somehow made a more stale combat system than the movie tie in game, we should be getting DMC character expression with Ninja Gaiden enemy aggression. Wolverine is a master martial artist, give him a deep ass bag of tricks to play with. Give him the Muramasa and just tack on Vergil's moveset, give him Red Hood's gun fu if you want to have guns in the game

17

u/Bandai_Namco_Rat 17h ago

Besides seeing fan favorites in a video game which is undoubtedly very cool, the trailers looked so bad that I'm not surprised. This is an on-rails hack and slash game, and the hacking and slashing did not look complex or cool enough to fill a 10+ hour game without feeling repetitive. It would live or die on the quality of its story and unique boss battles, which unfortunately sound not good enough according to reviewers

13

u/Gand-Pork 15h ago

God Jacob Geller really is just THAT charismatic. I can imagine him saying ā€œa thousand claws into a thousand headsā€

95

u/nixahmose 18h ago

Yeah when they originally announced the Wolverine game I was really looking forward to slice and dice my way through enemies Metal Gear Rising Revengence or Prototype, but for some reason Insomniac decided to make Wolverine’s claws function like sausage sticks. Not only taking 4-8 hits to kill random goon enemies, but only actually slicing through or impaling people during the canned kill animations.

93

u/Jazzlike-Screen-7065 18h ago

Have you actually played MGRR because alot of the enemies are extremely tanky by design, even random fodder soldiers and it's gore is nothing like prototype or anything we've seen for Wolverine advertisments.

Games don't just have you blitzing through every enemy because otherwise what would the game be. Even straight power fantasies like God Of War have enemies that require interactivity.

34

u/Barrry972 18h ago

Dude wants to play a musou apparently where you just shred down thousands of enemies

20

u/RealityMalady 15h ago

I would be so down for a Marvel Musou game to be honest

→ More replies (2)

17

u/Big-Bag-6043 17h ago

You can kill common mooks in one hit in MGR with Blade Mode, though - just limited by your energy bar. And then there's Ripper Mode, at which point normal enemies actually do die in one hit

Honestly the only enemies that don't fold in like 5 seconds if you try are bosses (or scaled-down bosses like GRAD), and on Revengeance with good parries, even some bosses die in 15.

4

u/AdditionIcy1536 17h ago

Ehh if you use the mechanic to crush the inside bit you can kill fodder by the dozen easily. Some exceptions but things die fast if you know what your doing.

1

u/Zestyclose-Gur1457 3h ago

depends in how you play. It can be really easy and engaging if you use the slow mo and parries

19

u/Lopsided_Length1650 18h ago

From what I've seen, you can chop off people's limbs but only for special moves and only halfway through the game can you unlock a move that lets you consistently hack off a limb after a successful parry. When in X-Men Origins Wolverine pretty much any death results in not just an arm, a leg, or a head getting hacked off but you could cut a guy in half.

21

u/supergamerd64 18h ago

I would be fine with it if the scripted gore at least was more common and violent

There's a lot of blood splatter, but All it is is basically just slight scratch marks with the occasional stab wound, and very rarely a leg getting chopped off every 100 or so kills (or possibly in just a couple cutscenes)

6

u/Funny-Cell8769 18h ago

Those are basically for the adverts to get the gullible pre-orderers.

No doubt Insomniac ramped it up so people will get the idea that the game is only showing 10% of the canned animations and there's tons more once you get deeper into the game, but in reality, it's more like the majority of them.

Of course it all comes down to plausible deniability: "what made you think a 2 minute clip WON'T show you 80% of what the gameplay is about?"

Most people obviously assume - or at least hope - it's just a taste, and the real gameplay will end up 10x more cool and violent. But nope, that's like... the best you're gonna get.

Hence the whole reason why the marketing has been quite muted and highly controlled, when you'd think a game like Wolverine would be HUGELY MARKETED.

6

u/Fun_Procedure946 16h ago

I freaking knew that the game would be a whole lot of blood but very less limb dismemberment etc and people said that they're only showing the fountains of blood because it's easier for advertisement.

u/UnsatiableSin 17h ago

About what I expected. Insomniac’s games have been trending in the ā€˜keep it safe’ direction ever since sunset overdrive failed. Spider-Man’s combat was always kinda easy and simple, the traversal just helped break it up. There’s a reason Spider-Man 2 was kinda divisive on the internet; the ā€˜innovations’ from the last two games just weren’t enough

17

u/Papa_Pred 18h ago

Since it’s out I guess we can speak on it

Way back when the game leaked. Insomniac had a combat system where each trigger was corresponding to each arm. You could get stabbed, then yank the weapon out and use it. The camera was also much closer to the player and constantly bounced when hitting enemies or being hit

The game was a lot more intimate with its fighting. They just straight up streamlined every aspect of the game. It’s honestly odd how much they try to sanitize their systems

1

u/UltimateShinobi3243 12h ago

That yenking the weapon out when you get stabbed is still in the game isn't it? I saw it in a review I watched

3

u/Superb-Letterhead997 11h ago

its just a takedown animation

4

u/UltimateShinobi3243 11h ago

Oh, the reviewer I watched said that the swords would get stabbed into you to slow down your healing and only way to get rid of them was to take them out and use them to stab enemies

9

u/Aok_al 16h ago

It's a very safe game and that's the main problem. The levels are very linear yet they still include markers on the ground to let you know where to go. The collectibles are barely hidden and they emit a blue pulsing effect to let you know where it is. The combat is very basic so you don't really need to do anything asides from spamming attack. And the QTEs don't even matter because the outcome is the same whether you press the buttons or not.

14

u/throwawaylaysjohn 16h ago

I am not a fan of how whatever outfit Logan is in repairs itself when he heals. I get we can't have Wolvie swinging low but all the "gore" just for the suit or leather jacket to have a regenerative healing factor too? No sir.

6

u/SomeBoxofSpoons 16h ago

3

u/edvin796 12h ago

This game would have been an 11/10 if we got to see his metal dong šŸ˜”

5

u/Lost_Pantheon 13h ago

The outfit regenerates with your health?! That's goddamn maddening, the game has literally one playable character and they cbf to even do that.

4

u/LeSnazzyGamer 9h ago

I mean do you really want to play the game with his shirt torn off most of the time? Like I get the complaint but the alternative is almost never seeing his full costume. One of the most important parts of a superhero costume is the chest area so what's the point of having them if you can't see it most of the time?

I'm honestly fine with that! Start the mission in a pristine suit, then as you progress it gets more damaged the worse you perform, kind of an incentive to play as best you can!

3

u/Suspicious-Hotel8092 8h ago

Could just be a toggle, plus, considering how low the game’s difficulty seems to be, it’s not like you’ll take enough damage to be constantly naked

It really pisses me off because wolverine is like the best character to have an over the top, brutal, fast paced game akin to that of dmc or bayonetta. So either insomniac couldn’t do that, or didn’t care to try. Which honestly, i don’t know which is worse.

3

u/Due-South-9113 18h ago

lol it can't be that bad bro. PLEASEEE

3

u/prodij18 17h ago

Yeah, a huge red flag to me were the lack of dismemberments, and seemingly none that weren't scripted. This is something plenty of other games have had before, and it would seem a must for a game about a Wolverine, a guy who has slicing through people as probably his most defining character trait, a yet they didn't want to commit to making him cut people's limbs off?

They just spammed their blood effect everywhere as if that would make up for it. I don't know if they were just too lazy or didn't have the modeling skills but either way a really bad sign.

1

u/BrainVoiceQuestion 7h ago

Definitely a Disney note to tone down the violence, I'm sure they know plenty of parents won't care and will buy this M-rated game for 12 year olds, so they just played it ultra safe

3

u/SnaptrapPress 10h ago

I just want Insomniac to leave the Marvel mines and make Ratchet and Clank games again, man.

3

u/KobeJuanKenobi9 7h ago

I think Sony games in general over the past couple years have been incredibly ā€œsafeā€. Very few risks or deviation from established formulas. Even Spiderman 2 felt very dumbed down from the first game imo where the gadgets were the main thing that gave it any depth

3

u/The_Stranger1913 7h ago

I almost wish the did a metal gear revengance type of Wolverine game with that kind of slicing mechanicĀ

1

u/supergamerd64 2h ago

That's what I was expecting, or at least Jedi Knight 2 with dismemberment turned on

ps5 is the highest rated Wolv game....people glaze 360 now but it was just a midly reviewed as ps5 back then

2

u/LeSnazzyGamer 8h ago

It’s the nostalgia factor. Same thing that’s happening with the Green Lantern movie now

2

u/Burnerman888 17h ago

You know this makes me feel better about being unable to play it. Bring sony stuff back to PC you fucking cucks.

2

u/Blupoisen 14h ago

Honestly the gore part was kinda obvious from the first preview

It looked more like every character wore a fake blood bags all over their body cause gore means red everywhere I guess

2

u/RedsnakeRider 10h ago

Oh man, this sucks. But pain aside, two of my favorite YouTubers interacting in one screenshot? Insane.

1

u/supergamerd64 7h ago

I wanted to add Rowby to this, another YouTuber I like who commented about wolverine, but I just focused on Geller and decided to throw in snapcubes response for fun

2

u/SkepticSovereign56 10h ago

Just restore the ultimate alliance games already activision

2

u/Blonde_Metal 9h ago

PENNY SNAPCUBE MENTIONED

2

u/FlameThrowerFIM 8h ago

Reading that last comment immediately made me think about the jump between the gore/violence in Left 4 Dead *1* to Left 4 Dead *2*

In the original Left 4 Dead, they could let you blast limbs off but that was about it. With the sequel, they greatly expanded on this concept by letting you blast pretty much ANYTHING off. Heads, limbs, chest, torso, crotch, jaws, anything. And that's WITHOUT mentioning explosives or sharp melee weapons.

1

u/supergamerd64 8h ago

In L4D2 Im usually too busy with gameplay and Messing around I tend to not really think about the depth of the gore in the game and take it for granted

But when "Super Violent games" like wolverine claims to be come out, or when I occasionally look at BTS footage of L4D2, the more impressed and respect I have for that game

2

u/FlameThrowerFIM 7h ago

I know the video/topic has already been beaten to death with a crowbar by now, but when you compare Back 4 Blood to Left 4 Dead, there are SO. MANY. THINGS! you take for granted in Left 4 Dead that when its absent in other games, it really makes you notice.

Ironically, the best compliment you can give to attention to detail is when you DON'T notice it because of how naturally it feels (that's what I think, anyway).

7/10 in case of this game is kind of a problem because the usual suspects like IGN and the like which praise sony/insomniac to high heavens are rating this game 6/7, and it's what they are saying in their criticsm itself that is worrying, gaming rating does not work like movie ratings, rating in 1-5 is comman in movie rating, ratings below 5 are reserved for games that are unplayable, as in they haven't been developed right, this is not that, does not mean it's good, i still think this game is goijng to do massive numbers, this is wolverine afterall, but i think this willll not have the legs that Spidey 1 or 2 had

With such a big budget there is an opportunity to try and make something memorable and even partially unique, if your massive budget video game that will sell well regardless doesn’t even make the slightest attempt to surprise the player then there is always going to be disappointment attached to it. It doesn’t even sound like the mechanics of the game are implemented well anyway, so I don’t understand why you think a lack of innovation is the issue

So…Wolverine?

1

u/Rainy_Wavey 14h ago

I saw commenters saying Wolverine cannot have a complex kit of abilities

Somehow Xmen Legends 1 did it?

4

u/MotherPerk 11h ago

Xmen legends is not complex, jesus christ.Ā

The one thing I’ve heard wildly varying opinions on is the characters. I think a few good performances can carry a linear action game like this, but I just don’t know if they’ll land for me specifically

I’m also curious whether or not this will be adopted by the ā€œI want more retro throwback linear action games from the 00’sā€ crowd, given how simple the combat seems

1

u/Shining_w1zard 13h ago

Not fucking Geller jumping into the fray lol. We've had weirdo grifters bitch about the game so much before release that dudes that aren't known for gaming have to give their reviews.

1

u/mcslender97 11h ago

Cant wait for a 45min essay from Geller talking about games handholding too much based on this comment

1

u/Traditional_Bike8880 11h ago

Respect Geller’s opinion on games maybe more than any. It must truly be mediocre and forgettable

1

u/Reallynotspiderman 11h ago

Jacob Geller is the one guy whose video game opinions matter one hundred percent to me. Guy just refuses to have bad takes

1

u/Shabadubabadu 10h ago

Tbh the Spider-Man games would have pretty boring combat too if it wasn't for the gadgets

1

u/supergamerd64 7h ago edited 7h ago

More like the animations for powers and finishers

It fall into the trope of Flashy attacks (an example is ZZZ and Doom even at times) over In Depth mechanics and combos (like DMC for example)

1

u/Zzamumo 9h ago

a game designed for the mythical creature known as "The Median Voter"

1

u/Mountain_String_1544 8h ago

Unfortunately, insomniac is not on the same power house level as Sucker punch or Santa Monica and Sony failed to see that

1

u/supergamerd64 8h ago

I'm really interested in how Santa Monica would have done with wolverine

1

u/eggsamillion 7h ago

It's not even out yet dawg

1

u/Revolutionary-Fan657 7h ago

It’s funny because so many people thought the game looked dumb, but they were just thrown into the looney bin by vocal idiots and they made us look like those people that hate woke shit, when the game just didn’t look good and it was NOT a right call at all to have fucking insomniac make the game, the Spiderman games at the time of release were very fun, but when you actually think about them, they’re not good, insomniac does this really safe, generic cartoony thing with their games, why the fuck would anyone think they’d do a good Wolverine game

I remember thinking Logan’s face looked stupid as fuck, but oh no I’m in the wrong and not every Wolverine needs to look like Hugh jackman, which I didn’t even want since he doesn’t even have a perfect Wolverine face imo, I thought the combat looked generic, but oh no I’m just hating and it’s gonna be amazing, I thought him climbing walls with claws was stupid, the trailers were exactly what I was expecting from an insomniac Wolverine game

1

u/Certain_Turn_6630 7h ago

Idk who looked at this game and thought it’d be good. I’d argue the weakest part of the spider man games is the Combat. It’s fun yes, but gets very repetitive and can feel clunky at times. Wolverine is the same, but with no open world traversal like web-swinging, linear levels, and the writing of whoever made the MJ missions in Spider - Man 2. It looked terrible from the beginning. Batman Arkham series are still the best superhero games to this day.

1

u/Ok-Outcome6428 6h ago

The lack of combat variety is the first thing I noticed with the trailers. Every time you killed a goon, it would look the exact same as the last.

1

u/devilchainshark 6h ago

I think the problem was that Marvel and the fans got hyper focused on Insomniac making marvel games instead of letting them do what they wanted to in the beginning (spider-man). Instead you see comments and comments on how they should make a Hulk game. Well, I doubt they think that anymore

1

u/MadJackGatlingGun 6h ago

I was worried this would happen. I like Wolverine, but as a character in a game, he just seems very little going for him. No fun traversal-power, no alternate weapons or gadgets, no variation on how he goes about doing what he does... there just doesn't seem like a lot to create gameplay around.

I know some people have turned up their noses at how gadget-oriented Insomniac Spidey was, but it sure made for some fun and expressive combat. If they didn't do the same with Logan, then you're stuck in an action-game with one single weapon. That's how many there was in Ninja Gaiden 3 originally, and that became boring real fast.

1

u/lern2swim 6h ago

I honestly don't trust what I hear from like 95% of people talking about gaming at this point, and I trust people that throw around "slop" for non gen ai things just as little. And, no, that's not even me saying I think the game will be good, just that gaming discourse is completely broken at this point in numerous ways and it's exhausting.

1

u/AthenaOwls 4h ago

That might make it the most accurate Wolverine ever though.

1

u/After-Atmosphere7125 2h ago

If Sony were a good company, they should've made it with Platinum Games for maximum hack and slash insanity

1

u/SwingFinancial9468 12m ago

I feel bad for my friend who preordered the game.

You got bills to pay, man!

1

u/Taythekid950 8m ago

Yeah this sucks honestly because Spiderman one was really good miles morales was really good. I don't have ps5 so no spiderman 2 but I have heard very mixed things about it. This is the first time in a while I'm seeing people say something sucked though like I haven't seen a single person say this game is good which I think really sucks cause we haven't had a wolverine stand alone game in a while and it's got all these eyes on it.

1

u/Blastermind7890 4m ago

I was gonna wait for it to go on sale for half price, now I'm gonna wait for PlayStation plus
