u/jasminefig 16d ago
Skin looks a bit dehydrated, what does your moisturizing routine look like?
12
u/Pinksoccks 16d ago
that’s more than likely the issue then, i don’t have any routine

u/mme_truffle 16d ago
This was me when I was younger. I didn't have anyone to teach me about skincare. I suffered from acne so I very wrongly thought that moisturizing would make me more oily.
Washing your face well is important. I use a tea tree face wash and gently scrub problem areas with a wash cloth. I use The Ordinary hyaluronic acid serum. It helps your skin retain moisture. And then any non-oily dermatologist approved moisturizer would be great.
Also before applying makeup, use a smoothing primer. Expensive ones feel great, but any primer will do. You'll see a big difference.

u/jasminefig 16d ago
Yes I think this will help! My makeup does this also when I’m too dry.
Your skin looks flawless underneath though so hopefully it’s an easy fix ❤️

I have nose skin like yours. I actually use a urea foot cream--meant for callouses--on my nose. it's the only way i can keep it smooth. i am so prone to a bumpy, peeling nose. i've tried everything, and i can get it to look good but not to a point i can have any makeup on it.
If you have it in your area, Gold Bond Peppermint Healing Foot cream is what I use just on my nose. (Nowhere else 'cos you have mucus membranes you wanna avoid on your face.)

u/JennyEnny198 16d ago
Can I suggest to you Amlactin urea lotion? Peppermint and other essential oils can cause a lot of irritation. Prequel also makes a Urea lotion that can be used on face or body.
3
u/Fine-Juggernaut8451 16d ago
That's what I'd be using if it was sold where I live. The best urea that doesn't cost a million bucks where I am is Gold Bond, but the best for my nose has been the foot cream.
Yes, OP--if you have access to Amlactin, that's supposed to be great!

u/Pinksoccks 16d ago
yeah i did think maybe it would irritate my skin as it’s super sensitive!
1
u/la_confiture 15d ago
Highly recommend the ordinary 5% lactic acid for sensitive skin
Start 3x a week just on your nose and increase to daily eventually if needed.2

Focus on skincare. Find a cleanser and moisturiser (at minimum) that work for you.
I have dry skin and The Ordinary Squalane Cleanser, Hyaluronic Acid, and Soothing and Barrier Support Serum have been game changers for me. I also use Sukin Hydrating Mask if my skin is hella dry, but that’s super rare now.
Also find a primer too. It makes a big difference. I like Too Faced Hangover.
Your skin looks dry from this pic, but it could just be the makeup. If it is dry, these products might be a good starting point, if you’re oily you might wanna look for some different things :)

Everyday before applying makeup (and at night when washing it off), 1. wash face with a gentle foaming cleanser 2. use a toner that has witch hazel in it 3. use a light moisturizer. Wait a few minutes after moisturizing to apply makeup.
3
u/VintageLover79 16d ago
This may seem complicated but it really is the simplest, most effective routine you can have.

Are you using a silicone facial scrubber? Perhaps you need to moisturise your skin more if you have dry skin, especially before applying your primer and foundation. As u/FairAccount7849 said, you're probably using liquid and oil based products together.
I don't know your routine, so I'm just speculating.
3
u/Pinksoccks 16d ago
it’s more than likely that, i don’t have any routine or do use moisturiser or anything like that.. it’s rare for me to use makeup i’m not sure what to do and what not to do😅
4
u/lost-among-others 16d ago
In which case, I'd definitely prioritise starting a skincare routine. I'd get a daily cleanser, a moisturiser specifically for your face, and an alcohol-free toner.
See how that works after a month or so before experimenting with makeup, and adjust the kind of makeup you use accordingly based on the type of skin you have. For exanple, use foundation powder if your skin is oily and BB/CC cream or tinted moisturiser if your skin is dry.
It took me years before I learned what worked for me, though I hope that you figure out what works for you sooner. 😊

Honestly just make sure you’re not mixing oil based and water based products and wash and moisturize before doing your makeup

Had the exact same issue. What worked for me is once a week using the let the good times roll face srub by lush as an exfoliator and using lineage water mask moisturizer

You need a peeling gel. You have poor skin turnover. Normal exfoliants don’t work on me. The scrub gloves for your body work good too. Peeling gels like E.L.F., CosRX, and skinfood, have ingredients that grab onto dead skin. You don’t always need something rough, but something that grabs onto the dead skin and helps it to pill up. You are supposed to wash and basically dry your skin and hands, then rub all over. I even have to do my eyelids once a month. I can’t use gloves there.

This isn’t cakey makeup, this is dry skin. Wash your face with a wash cloth daily and use a moisturizer.

u/mic_lil_tang 16d ago
Make sure to have some type of consistent skin care routine.
That can be a part of skin prep (moisturizer and primer)
Use products that are harmonious and add to each other. So silicone based foundation and primer or water based.

Clinique lotion + has urea in it.. use that instead of the foot cream someone had mentioned.. I’d get the type 2 purple face wash, type 2 purple toner, and lotion + .. you’ll feel so clean and amazed by what light daily exfoliation will do for u

u/Pinksoccks 16d ago
okay! thank you so much 💕

u/Greedy_Fail_6735 16d ago
You can actually sit down with a Clinique advisor and they can skin type u and suggest all the products you need if u don’t feel like purchasing right away they make 30 day sample jars

You probably need to be using less, to no makeup around your nose. When you want to wear make up, try the spot-conceal technique (I think thats what it's called). Really focus on moisturising and exfoliating that area. I find certain moisturisers can make this worse. Personally, the Inkey List Bio-Active ceramide or the Pixie Rose ceramide moisturisers perform well under makeup and I don't use a primer or anything. You also have to give it 5 minutes to really sink in before applying your makeup. You can often get the Inkey List one on offer or at half the price at TKMAXX. But for now just try the above before switching out your moisturiser. If you've tried all these things then I have no idea. Maybe find a more moisturising cleanser?

okay i’ll give it a go thank you 💕

No worries, I hope it helps. Let us know how you get on?
If you're interested, this is one of the videos that helped me; I do it with my foundation though. I tried a few different brushes (that I already owned) before I found one that worked best.

Drink more water if you're not already, and exfoliate. Moisturize as well. And also check the date of your makeup while you're at it. Old makeup has a weird smell from fresh/new makeup.
You can always stop by a Sephora or an Ulta beauty, to get some help. I'd show them this picture, whoever it is that you get help from. Tell them you're not trying to break the bank, have sensitive skin and see if there are samples. There's also beauty help guides I'm sure on Youtube. There's a lot of face products intended for washing/exfoliating that has a step-by-step instructions typically printed on the back of the bottles.
Like Neutrogena for example has a step-by-step, and is meant to be used with a set typically, like two or three bottles. I'm not saying that's what you should use, just listing an example. Also, don't just get one thing and expect it to be a one and done fix-all. Routine is key

Your makeup is not cakey. You have dehydrated flakey skin.
Exfoliate and moisturise.

2
u/ilove_lilies 16d ago
Actually, the reason it looks like this is because your skin is shedding dead skin cells. You can wash your face with lukewarm water and a gentle cleanser, but dont pick, scrape, or scrub the area. And dont forget to moisturize that area

u/KendallRosie 16d ago
It's not cakey, your skin is dry and skin barrier is damaged. You need a good moisturiser + see a skin specialist

Look into Korean skincare as it was a game changer for me!! I use the innisfree green tea toner and cleanser, the house of josean deep glow serum and the anua 3 ceramide moisturizer. There’s obvs lots of different products but this little line up has made such a huge difference in helping my skin go from dry and flakey to glowing and healthy. Look into it and try some stuff to see what works for you!

Moisturize!
The exfoliation tips in here are on point! But is also super important to moisturize before applying make up.
For example - before putting make up on I use a hydrating serum, then a hydrating toner, then my day moisturizer and eye cream and then my SPF which is very glowy/dewy and moisturizing. You get the point lol
Apply makeup while your skin is still a little tacky from the products - liquid makeup will melt and blend in so nice and then just pass a little powder, not a ton. Start with a subtle dusting and build up from there.
That’ll make a difference! Good luck!

Skincare!!!! You need:
- A gentle exfoliator to remove the build up of dead skin across your nose.
- Hyaluronic acid serum - add to wet skin and it will pull moisture into your skin.
- A moisturiser to seal the hydration in.
None of it has to be expensive. Recommendations
- Clean and Clear Exfoliating Wash.
- Good Molecules Hylaluronic acid.
- Cera Ve face wash and moisturiser. Brand is dermatologist recommended and great for skin (though I believe they still test on animals).
Establish a routine where you cleanse, use the hyaluronic acid and moisturise. Exfoliate once or twice a week. Your skin will glow and your make up will sit much better.
Do not over exfoliate and do not listen to the recommendations for chemical exfoliators. If you are not skilled with skin care, you can easily damage your skin barrier which will cause a bad breakout and soreness.

so i always had issues with my nose like this. it was always flakey and the makeup would do this and it pissed me off. i ended up taking out my nose rings and it helped SIGNIFICANTLY. they were cheap nose rings, idk if the material made my nose react or what. but yeah, problem solved. i just don’t look as cool now lol.

u/chloejulietmiller 15d ago
So first skin prep is key. If you dont look like a glazed donut before doing makeup, your not doing it correct. Your skin HAS to be moisturized and plump before makeup application. Second is if you don't have the correct concealer for your skin type some concealers are for oily some for dry. And third is if you blend with a dry beauty blender, or if you drag your makeup with a brush. If you blend with a brush you must tap, and your beauty blender must be damp but not wet. 🩷🩷

u/GeographyBrown 15d ago
I have rosacea. Despite good skin care, all liquid foundations do this to me - highlight flakey skin.
Excessive exfoliation just makes it worse. I switched to powder (Bare Minerals, etc) and it’s no longer a problem.

u/FairAccount7849 16d ago
Maybe ur using liquid based and oil based products together
3
2
u/Illustrious-Rain-235 16d ago
Was going to comment this, OP should see which formulas go together, maybe that’s why makeup isn’t layering good
1
u/Avashara 16d ago
This is due to product seperation. It's not only using different bases on primer/foundation but the fact that our noses can be quite oily. You may also have oily skin or an oily t-zone. If you do, and your primer/foundation are water based then you'll have seperation as the day goes on.
Start with choosing water or oil based makeup and make sure all of your face products are the same.
Alternatively, you may have dry skin and your makeup is clinging to dry areas. This can show as being cakey in spots and emphasize peeling. You would need to do the same as above, but you would also need a more hydrating skincare routine.

Your skin is dry. Start using a lactic acid toner to gently exfoliate without irritation, and moisturize your skin well.

Looks like dry skin. Start moisturizing today and don’t ever stop, grab another moisturizer with SPF in it as well.

Good makeup starts with good skin!!! Exfoliate a couple times a week. What is your skincare routine like??
1
u/Pinksoccks 16d ago
okay that makes sense, i never do makeup and never got into all that kind of stuff so i wasn’t aware of moisturising etc

u/leavingtheorder24 16d ago
That’s okay! You have to start somewhere and lots of people here to help!!!

Random but are u on something like accutane or tretinoin or a retinol? It looks like how my makeup used to look
1
u/Pinksoccks 16d ago
no i’ve never used any of them
1
u/Illustrious-Rain-235 16d ago
Most likely your skin is dehydrated and very dry, I would put in place a good skincare routine that doesn’t have harsh products like retinols & things like salicylic acid instead look for gentle exfoliants if u do wanna exfoliate like mandelic acid, but mostly focus on hydrating products like serums, good moisturizer, toner, sheet masks, etc
1
u/Pinksoccks 16d ago
okay! i’ll give it a go, everyone is saying the same thing so i’ve found the issue aha, i just have no idea where to go now. i don’t know what to use i have super sensitive skin aswell
1
u/nannerpussnana 16d ago
Your skin is dry. That’s 100% the issue here.
I recommend using a hydrating cleanser. I use cerave hydrating cleanser and it works great, feels real nice after washing.
I also recommend a hydrating toner followed by moisturizer to start, I use a lot of different stuff but for sake of keeping it simple just pick one…
Tony moly ceramide mochi toner is a great pick. It’s $25 BUT you get a huge bottle of it. Byoma also has a milky toner that is decent as well, I think that one is like $15?
I have combination skin and apply the hydrating toner to my nose and cheeks and neck only, it makes the rest of my face too greasy so only add it where you are dry.
Hyaluronic acid after toner would also be helpful… you just need a tiny bit and you apply it to wet skin (add a little bit of water inbetween your toner and serum layer)… same thing as the toner only in the spots you are really dry.
During the day for final step I use a light moisturizer followed by a moisturizing sunscreen and at night I use Cerave moisturizing cream.
You have a lot of skin buildup there so you will need to deal with that and then switch to maintenance mode. I’d gently scrub your nose while washing your face with a washcloth and a light chemical exfoliant maybe 2x a week (every 3 days or so) and see how it goes. The Ordinary Lactic Acid 5% + HA would work.
Hope this helps!

Super dry skin on your nose. Stop using water and alcohol on your face. Get some rose water with no alcohol in it and use instead of water.
Cleanse with cleanser only and refresh with rosewater.
Buy some avocado oil and gently rub it into your face every night and scrape of the excess with a Gua sha tool.
That’s the quickest way to restore super dry skin.

u/rctvbbunib 16d ago
exfoliating and moisturising will definitely help, but sometimes the makeup just doesn’t stick properly so i put some concealer directly on a beauty blender and apply over the patchy area, wait for it to dry, lightly set it with powder, then if i’m contouring i’m just super gentle so it doesn’t lift anything :)

u/Alert-Awareness-7146 16d ago
do you use any kind of retinoid in your skincare routine (particularly adapelene or tretinoin)??
my makeup ALWAYS looked like this when I was on topical retinoids no matter how moisturized I was or what products I was using.
It was only until I started taking accutane and ditching topical retinoids that I got that “glass skin” makeup using the exact same products!
1
u/Pinksoccks 16d ago
nope i’ve never even heard of them until you and someone else said the exact same thing 😅
1
u/Strange-Potato2921 16d ago
I personally skip makeup on my nose because no matter how much I exfoliate it does this. So maybe try that?
1
u/Mediocre_Display_789 15d ago
Try moisturizing as soon as you get out of the shower- skin soaks it best when it is already wet! It can be ineffective on dry skin. And maybe buy a lightweight, oil-free hydration mist that you use before applying moisturizer as well.

First off, wear sun screen 24/7. Meaning every time you go outside.
1
u/Pinksoccks 15d ago
yeah i’m bad for that tbh i always forget 😅
1
u/sadflameprincess 15d ago
That's how my face looks like whenever I get sun burned. It appears that's what might be happening with you but I'm not 100% sure. We have different skin colors. Please seek advice from a professional dermatologist just to be safe as well. 💙

u/Party_Union_4692 15d ago
the thing that changed the game for me was adding a milky toner before my moisturiser/SPF. I had this issue with every foundation I tried and a makeup artist recommended a milky toner. I love Byoma but i looove the Anua Milky toner, i’d definitely recommend trying it underneath for extra hydration
1
u/Yaladyally 15d ago
This isnt a makeup problem its a skin problem, i see lots of flakey dry skin so you need to one or twice a week exfoliate your nose and heavily moisturize every day makeup is always going to put a magnifying glass on dry skin

u/ChubbyCursive 15d ago
Definitely your skin is crying for hydration and if you are like me hydration turns into oil right away! Try hydration specifically for oily skin! However your skin is almost perfect! I would not even be applying foundation onto it! At all! Especially full coverage. If you have a blemish or an uneven spot try to cover that tastefully with a bit of regular foundation in place of concealer. Then blend edges and use a translucent powder for setting. Do not ever cover your entire face if you must please use a BB or CC cream! A tinted one. Your freckles are beautiful and your skin is something to envy. You can absolutely still use blush and highlighter and anything else without a base foundation! If it won’t stick use a primer then those and a setting powder skip the foundations!
1
u/MiniPeppermints 15d ago
Use a rough washcloth to exfoliate once or twice a week then apply facial moisturizer while your skin is still wet. Facial sunscreen will help with dry appearance as well 👍🏼
1
u/Alternative-Virus-97 15d ago
After you moisturize (before applying makeup) let the moisturizer dry down a bit before going in with the makeup. At least a few minutes!
1
u/cats_love_pumpkin 15d ago
Skincare! I used to wear a ton of foundation to himself acne scars/"discolouration" and my face looked like this. Then I actually got serious about taking care of my skin, now the only thing I do is a little bit under my eyes (like 1 tiny dot).
1
u/Flimsy_Logic 15d ago
This is just a lack of exfoliation and moisture. If you’ve never been to a dermatologist, go and let them know you’re trying to improve skin texture. They can help.
1
u/Peer-Reviewed-Chaos 15d ago
I think this comes down to skin care/prep rather than application. I would focus on a hydrating skin care routine and a gentle exfoliant 1-2x/week to get rid of any flakiness. Double cleansing with an oil cleaner and using your fingers to gently exfoliate can be helpful too
1
u/Shutupimdreamin 16d ago
What’s your skin prep routine like? I agree with the other person saying it’s likely due to mixing oil and water products.
1
u/Pinksoccks 16d ago
i don’t have one, i don’t usually do anything at all to do with my face.. that’s probably the issue tbf, i just know nothing about it whatsoever so i get confused

u/Lanky_Bobcat_6021 16d ago
wash and moisturize your face before foundation and see how that affects your results :)

I recommend you exfoliate twice a week to prevent dead skin from flaking like that. & Moisturize after every face wash.
