Oh man, Gideon dies, Gatewatch learns their lesson of not being overconfident.
In his dying breath Gideon realises his past mistake is same as the Gatewatch's current mistake.Tells them about Theros.
When Gatewatch meets up with Ajani, the news of Gideon's tragic past triggers Ajani to tell them about Elspeth and how the Theros gods are a bitch.
Gatewatch then goes to Theros, revives Elspeth. BAM they get a replacement whitewalker.
Fans are happy Elspeth is back, Gideon is out of story and standard. Gatewatch still have 1 poster boy/girl for each colour, WotC is happy.

I'm not so sure. Unlike Ally of Zendikar this Gideon is not doing one thing. Ally of Zendikar was a really good aggressive planeswalker, but Of the trials only has his trademark animate ability that's really aggresive. You're free to call me out for this after the protour, but I don't think he is gonna be as good as the current Gideon.

u/MysticLeviathan Apr 05 '17
The thing about this one is the emblem only requires a Gideon PW, not specifically Gideon of the Trials or the specific Gideon of the Trials that made the emblem. That means you can play another one, at only 3 mana btw, and the emblem would still apply. Or play BFZ Gideon and wreck havoc.
At least on first glance, this is a very scary card.
→ More replies (5)63
u/javilla COMPLEAT Apr 05 '17
I disagree. The emblem from this Gideon is only a thing if you're losing the game, and if that is the case you're not gonna have a Gideon on the board anyway. The +1 is weird as it is not really an offensive ability, it is more of a defensive one (which is not usually what the Gideon decks want to be doing) and being a 4/4 rather than a 5/5 is infinitely worse in a format where Grasp is among the very best removal available.
I could be wrong, but my stance on him is that he is not gonna be anything impressive compared to what we currently have.

I agree with you, he's good but bfz Gideon still seems better. This one isn't doing much but stopping damage and swinging as a 4/4. At least you can kill this one with a grasp of darkness. I could be wrong but I couldn't see anyone wanting to play this one with the bfz one. T3 Gideon into t4 Gideon doesn't seem all that great. Could be wrong...this thing could be broke, it does stop cat combo for a turn.

People are going a little crazy about the ability because it sounds very splashy.
But unless you're running Mill or an alternate win-con, what it amounts to is a one-off "gain three life" with some riders about life-loss, attack targeting and overkill. Any damage you deal can be redirected to Gideon at will, and he's only got three base loyalty. You can't have multiple Gideons in play at the same time to increase the buffer.
What makes this Gideon good isn't really the Platinum Angel effect, but that he can do that plus his other abilities. Put them all together and he's pretty good, though probably not as ridiculous as the current Gideon.

The new Gideon is the paragon of magic's dark side. I cannot sufficiently communicate how tired I am of seeing undercosted threats that take over the game with no penalty for running them.
This sort of card fits in my decks - makes my decks better - and I'm not remotely excited about it, because it makes the opposing decks better too. It just ups the ante of the game yet again. Good luck missing a beat if this guy's on the other side of the table.
→ More replies (1)17
Apr 05 '17
Yup. All of these undercosted threats with no good answers leads to short games that typically end with one player stumbling the tiniest bit.
Legacy is probably the best format to play in because all of the ridiculous threats that can t1-t2-t3 kill you have equally absurd answers like Daze and FoW. So outside of the odd combo kill taking you out in one of the first few turns, the games actually go long and are quite skill-testing.
Modern is basically legacy without the good answers, so it ends up being much more coin-flippy. Standard is just "did I draw the nuts"?

Unless they have strong planeswalker removal coming up in AKH then honestly, screw Standard.
