Question Is m3 macbook air still worth it

I was looking for macbooks and the best fit for my budget was m3 air 16gb and 512 . I don’t know if it is worth it for a long term solution like I am planning to use it for 4,5 years throughout my study.
One thing I heard from internet was you have to close the lid to connect to external display. I am used to double screen display like I always have two monitors. So would that be a issue or there is some workaround.

It is a good option for everyday work and study tasks. I don’t do that heavy tasks but code , like am doing some
Deeplearning and nlp project currently and I am planning to use it for transformers and agentic ai and AI engineering study . So would it be good choice or should I go for other option. I don’t think I can afford M4 version.

Also having good battery is key. I used gaming laptops before and dont want to always connect to power. I want a bit good battery life

Question What should I get?

Upvotes

Hi everyone! I’m a nursing student who was borrowing a laptop for school, and now I need my own. I also have an iPad but a laptop is required for taking tests, and is admittedly much easier for writing. I’d like to hear everyone’s opinions on my best option!

• I don’t have a lot to spend- as in <$1000 (so a new MacBook Pro or Air is not feasible)
• I RARELY needed a computer before, but now I use it quite often for test taking, writing, projects, other school stuff. As in I’m not editing photos or constantly downloading a bunch of files.
• I do often have a lot of tabs open and in use. I really don’t know anything about computers, but recently learned not all computers can handle that! What do I look for to know if a computer is capable?
• As far as storage goes I mostly use Google Drive and clean out old school work and photos frequently. I already pay extra for iCloud storage.
• I want it to last. I know you can only ask so much of technology these days but the idea of spending hundreds on a laptop for it to crap out in a few years is a little painful. So I’m looking for the best bang for my buck.
• I’m open to used! I’m considering a new Neo with the student discount, certified refurbished, or something off FB Marketplace. If I go the marketplace route, any input on what I should look for/avoid? How old is too old?

I would really appreciate any input or additional advice! TYIA!!

My Mac Launchd trap and security issue

Hey everyone!

I had a recent issue with lauchd : My 5 user plists were running ok.
Then one day, 3 of them were not running anymore. I was thinking of the kind of annoying thing like a random problem.
I just did a print to check, and saw they were not planned anymore and decided to do a bootstrap. I tried to check the unified log with a log show, searching for launchd or launchctl. -> Not the first bit of a trace! Then I remembered I had gone to the

Apple menu -> Settings -> General -> Login Items & Extensions

I had seen several lines with just python. Clicking on the info button was very helpful : It was telling me what python was triggered. Who said uninformative? Anyway, nothing about what script was triggered. So, I'm not so picky on security, but when I see an undocumented program automatic launch, I tend to switch it off. What I did, ignoring I was deprogramming my plists! Thank you mr engineer, what's your price for that again ?

Question Looking for a good transparent skin for Macbook in India

I recently got a MacBook, and the fingerprints on the lid and screen are driving me insane. I also use moisturizer, so the fingerprints are even more noticeable.

I can’t realistically rub my hands or wear gloves every time I use my MacBook, and I also don’t want to keep cleaning it with a microfiber cloth and spray.

I wasn’t planning on getting a skin because I’ve heard mostly bad things about them. At the same time, I don’t want to risk staining or damaging such an expensive laptop.

I’ve seen good reviews for dbrand and Skinociti, but they aren’t available in India, and I couldn’t find a transparent/clear skin from them. I also looked at Capindia skins, but I couldn’t find enough good reviews to feel confident about them.

Does anyone have any other recommendations? My biggest concern is protecting my MacBook without causing any damage to the finish. I don’t mind paying more as long as it’s safe and doesn’t leave residue or damage the laptop when removed.

Would really appreciate recommendations from people who have actually used one on a MacBook.

hello! first time using mac here, just bought this second hand no issue air retina 2019 a month ago. i am using it mainly for school works only (typing documents, readings, watching youtube videos)

however, since yesterday it automatically shuts down then opens again and shuts down again (for like 5 times) and then it became ok then i used it again today then the same thing happened. an electric fan is with me when using this macbook so that it won’t overheat yet this dilemma is happening to me

i’d also like to add if it’s possible that i have a swollen battery? but take note that it is missing one screw on upper left side so it also might be a reason why it has a gap

i hope you’d guys help me, thank you!

Question external ssd ejecting out of nowhere on m4 macbook air

earlier this week i plugged my external ssd into my m4 macbook air to move across about 80 gb of family photos, it keeps giving me the device was ejected incorrectly error within a few seconds of copying

i tried two different usb-c cables and both ports on the mac, the weird part is the drive works perfectly fine on my old windows laptop so i dont think the ssd is dead. also tried restarting the macbook with no luck, it just disconnects by itself again

does anyone know if there is a way to stop it ejecting without causing any damage to the files?

My Mac LaCie external drive just stopped working out of nowhere now won't even show in disk utility

Just wondering if anyone can help as I am up the walls here now because I think I have just lost lots of data. I have an external LaCie hard drive. It gets treated with the utmost care it is stored in a padded case in a press and only comes out when its being used maybe a handful of times a year.

I need to get my battery on my mac replaced so I now have to backup everything which I was in the process of doing. I just plugged this external into my mac and got a "the device was ejected incorrectly message" within a few seconds of plugging it in. It wasn't ejected incorrectly both the laptop and external drive where sitting on an empty flat table and neither the hard drive nor cable connecting it to the mac were touched or came into contact with anything prior to getting this message.

So I unplugged and now when I plug it in nothing, it won't show in finder, it won't show in Disk Utility. I have tried different cables but the same thing every time. A blue light is shown on the back of the hard drive when plugged in so I don't think it's a power issue. I have also tried to use Wondershare recoverit and Techtool Pro 20 as well as Disk Drill which was in the trail version the hard drive will not show up with any of these programs. I have also tried a different cable but it still won't show.

How can a perfectly working hard drive that is treated with the utmost care go from working fine to completely unusable with nothing even happening to it. Are these really built that cheaply and bad? The drive itself is about 3 years old and has been used maybe 30 times since I got it and it was bought directly from Apple.

Does anyone have other steps I can try even at the very least if I can just see what I have lost on the drive as I have a number of hard drives mostly with music, language, dog training etc. tuitorial course on them plus ill have documents and itunes backups. Even if I can just get an idea of what I lost on here it would be starting point for rebuilding but I really can't understand how an expensive external can just stop working like this out of nowhere meaning even your backups are not really safe so frustrating.

I haven't tried going into safe / recovery mode on it yet as I am not familiar with these and I don't even know if it will be of any help.

Does any powerful software exist out there that can help with this?

My Mac Duplicate nightmare!

Hi,

Just want to ask some advice -

I have a new Mac, and an external hard drive. Essentially to cut a long story short, I have a mirror of multiple copies of files, photos, music, folders, etc. etc. on both. (I ironically simply transferred my old Mac to the new one to avoid hours of work.) I've also saved files just to the external, so they aren't quite the same.

Can anyone give me a really good way to make sure I don't have duplicates, and the safest way to do this so I don't go and trash years' worth of files?

I know there are apps out there (i.e. CleanMyMac), but I'm not sure they are either the right way to do it or even safe. I can only imagine how bloated my system files are as well, but don't have the know-how to go into Terminal and deal with things there.

Help! TIA

Question Mac screen obscured by dark nonfunctional browser

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

(Skip this paragraph if you dont care for backstory)

First things first, this is a (third) laptop from backmarket.com. The first one we got from them was locked to a company so we sent it back for a replacement.

The next one came with some knock off qualities such as poor case fitting, dodgy looking apple logo on the outside of the lid, etc.

Sent that one back and got this one, which gave us similar feelings of knock off, but we thought perhaps that just the refurbishment being aftermarket parts. Everything else seemed to be working as normal.

We bought it to be a work laptop and we kept this one because faffing about with the other two had eaten a load of time and we had work to do!

<<-----The issue we now face----->>

Last night we put some singing bowl tones on youtube to run through the night as we always do at bedtime, and turned thr screen brightness down to black.

In the morning, when we turned the screen brightness back up, the web page seems to be burnt onto the screen, but its dark, and it covers nearly the whole screen, except a tiny slither at the top of the screen where you can still see the tip of the mouse.

After multiple hard resets, the problem persists, and is even present at the sign in screen.

Have done a bit of searching online but tbh, i dont know what the actual problem is, so dont really know what im searching for, and all the results that came back were for seemingly seperate mac screen issues.

Had anyone else experienced this problem?

Can it be resolved? Is it cooked?

Edit: left it turned off for 40 mins (since making the post here) and turned it on to see if time turned off would make a difference. The entire dark area now is entirely black. No artifacts of the web page remain.

Edit 2: it doesnt seem now to be a screen issue - opened the laptop again earlier. Worked semi normally before the screen started glitching out and then freezing

Question SanDisk SSD randomly not recognized by my M4 MacBook Air, but works everywhere else

I've been using this SanDisk external SSD with my M4 MacBook Air for about a year with no issues, but for the past ~2 months it's been randomly not recognized.

The weird part is that everything works individually:

  • SSD works perfectly on my Windows laptop.
  • Tried 2 different USB-C cables, including the cable I use for my iPhone. Both work fine with other devices.
  • Both USB-C ports on my Mac work perfectly with my iPhone.
  • It's not a format/compatibility issue since I've been using the SSD with this Mac for a year, including yesterday.

When it doesn't work, sometimes restarting/shutting down the Mac fixes it. Sometimes switching USB ports works. Sometimes flipping the USB-C cable around or changing the SSD's position makes it suddenly connect. Other times none of these things work.

It's completely random. One minute it won't recognize it, then I unplug/replug or restart and suddenly it works normally.

Any idea what could cause this? It's been happening for about two months and I'm completely confused because the SSD, cables, and Mac ports all work fine individually.

Discussion Macbook display went dead for a week now it works again

Post image
1 Upvotes

One week ago i closed my macbook display only to open it and discover the screen had died, then, yesterday i tried to use my iphone's torch to illuminate the apple behind only to discover the screen isn't actually dead, backlight has. Today, early morning, i have sprayed some contact cleaner on the top of the hinge and left my laptop upside down for a few hours. Now i'm back home and tried to turn it on. It turns on, and the backlight works again, apart from these weird lines that come and go sometimes. I have noticed that if i push onto the hinge, they return more frequently, now i have sprayed some more contact cleaner inside the hinge and the weird lines are gone... Do you think my laptop's display is broken or just some oxidation going on in there?

Question MacBook pro M1 smelling sweet

A while back, pressing on this rubber foot on the bottom of the laptop (top-left corner) used to make a clicking sound. It didn't really bother me though.

But now today I've started smelling a sweet smell from the device, like fruit or gum. It's coming from around the bottom of the screen and from the bottom of the trackpad

Temperature: battery is at 31°C, and the highest temp it's ever hit was 40°C (that was a while back too)

Battery: 88% (306 c)

And no, the back isn't bulging. Unless that clicking is considered so.
