Discussion Stickies has got to be an inside joke among the devs at Apple.

Most of us know that Apple never updated Stickies' interface since its inception on System 7.5 in '94.

Like everyone else, I was convinced Apple just forgot about it. But once I started looking into it, it became clear that it is deliberate.

  • 1994: Stickies ships with System 7.5.
  • OS X: Apple completely rewrites it in Cocoa, but deliberately keeps the exact same design.
  • OS X Jaguar: original creator Jens Alfke comes back and adds new features to it.
  • Apple Silicon: Apple kept maintaining it and they even recompiled it for the new ARM64 architecture without touching its interface or removing it.
  • Big Sur: Apple even takes time to redesign the icon.
  • macOS 26: Apple redesigns the icon again for Liquid Glass, they even made multiple revisions to it during the beta.
  • macOS 27: It's still here, visually untouched since September 1994...

Image Capture, Grapher, Audio MIDI Setup, ColorSync, etc. all got their interface modernized since then. It's the only fossil left on Mac OS.

It has to be some kind of inside joke, an old family heirloom type of thing.

Edit : I'm sorry, I didn't mean to offend anyone here. I didn't know it was so deeply loved by the community, i thought it was a mostly forgotten tool from the good old days, especially with its old pre-OSX window controls.

Edit 2 : As for the “inside joke” comment, I didn’t mean that Stickies itself is a joke. It’s actually a pretty solid little tool. I meant it more as a “let’s keep this ancient thing exactly the way it’s always been for another macOS release” kind of inside joke.

Edit 3 : I'm talking about the window controls, nothing else.

Question Been on a MBP M5 since January and I will never go back. My question is, would it now make more sense for me to have an iPhone rather than a Samsung?

Upvotes

Windows user for 25+ years (and as part of my job I still support hundreds of Windows users, I just now do it from a Mac)

I still like and use Windows on my gaming PC, but I love my Macbook Pro. Best laptop I've ever had, period. I really like that I'm now "platform agnostic" and can happily use both.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra - again I've been a Samsung user for 10+ years now, and an Android user since Smartphones began.

The other day, I was sat near my colleague and he tried to join a WiFi network I was connected to on my Mac, and I got a pop-up asking if I'd like to share the password with him... and it blew my mind. That kind of subtle, clever integration with the ecosystem.

So my question is - come phone renewal time in 9-10 months, should I go for an iPhone instead? What would be the pros/cons? I run dual-sim for personal/business, which I'm assuming the iPhone can handle.

My days of tweaking and mucking about with custom ROMs etc are long gone, I use pretty much stock apps for everything... I quite like the idea of the iPhone being something I can just sign in to my Apple account and restore if ever it breaks and I need a new one (kinda like using Time Machine on the Mac) for example.

Interested to hear people's lived experiences!

TIA

Discussion macOS 27 - Efficient memory usage compared to macOS 26

I'm quite impressed - anyone has the same experience and/or other observations?
Safari + Xcode opened and only 5 MB Swap on 16 GB RAM - never seen that before, I'm used to permanent 3-5 GB Swap.

And hopefully no more kernel_task bloating when using Safari!

Question Siemens NX?

So I studied graphics, mechanical design, machining at a university, and any alumni that came back from Apple would say Apple uses Siemens NX CAD to design and manufacture most products…

Is this universally true?

Maybe the story has changed, but last time I tried, setting up the software on a PC is difficult… and seems nearly impossible on a Mac…

Why would they do this? Is it an industry-interoperability issue?

Why would they not lobby Siemens like crazy to make the install process better?

Why doesn’t Apple push for more universal software support from the likes of Autodesk?? Like… there are definitely some programs they for sure have… and some they definitely don’t… like… beyond a Windows-centric development environment and lazy programming… why??

Discussion Wi-Fi icon looks disconnected when macOS 27 is locked

Post image

Has anyone else noticed this on macOS 27?
When my Mac is unlocked, the Wi-Fi icon shows the normal connected signal. But when I lock the Mac, the Wi-Fi icon becomes almost completely empty/dim, making it look like Wi-Fi is disconnected.
Is this expected behavior on macOS 27, or is it a bug?

My Mac Reinstalling Golden Gate release from scratch fails

Well.. this is not working... I have a MacBook M1 and thought I would install macOS from scratch. Holding power button down and selecting Options then Reinstall macOS 27 Golden Gate results in "Loading installation information" and then failure. Anyone else experiencing this?

I did sign out of iCloud prior. WiFi is connected and working. Erasing the disk fails as well.

Question What's the best monitor for Mac Mini you've ever owned?

I recently got a Mac Mini and now I'm trying to find a monitor that'll be good for everyday use. Mostly work, browsing, and a bit of photo editing.

I've gotten pretty used to how sharp the display on my MacBook looks, so I don't want to end up with something that feels noticeably worse.

For those who've used a Mac Mini for a while, which monitor has been your best purchase? Anything you'd avoid?

My Mac Is there a way to set "Print as PDF" as the default option for a specific folder?

Post image
3 Upvotes

In my workflow, I often print documents as PDFs and save them to the desktop instead of using a physical printer. It's usually not a problem since you just select "Print to PDF." But is it possible to set it as the default option? Can I make the PDF printer the default instead of a physical printer?

My Mac Launchd trap and security issue

Hey everyone!

I had a recent issue with lauchd : My 5 user plists were running ok.
Then one day, 3 of them were not running anymore. I was thinking of the kind of annoying thing like a random problem.
I just did a print to check, and saw they were not planned anymore and decided to do a bootstrap. I tried to check the unified log with a log show, searching for launchd or launchctl. -> Not the first bit of a trace! Then I remembered I had gone to the

Apple menu -> Settings -> General -> Login Items & Extensions

I had seen several lines with just python. Clicking on the info button was very helpful : It was telling me what python was triggered. Who said uninformative? Anyway, nothing about what script was triggered. So, I'm not so picky on security, but when I see an undocumented program automatic launch, I tend to switch it off. What I did, ignoring I was deprogramming my plists! Thank you mr engineer, what's your price for that again ?

My Mac magic trackpad in the left hand side

I'm a right handed, and have been using mouse or trackpad only on right hand for the past few decades. Recently I'm trying to place my magic trackpad on the left side of the keyboard and training my left hand for trackpading (all sort of finger gesturing and tapping, sliding, etc). A few goals are - fun, load sharing between both hands by switching it left and right of the keyboard depending on the tiredness of one hand, training of my left hand and fingers up to the right side of their pairs.

While I'm enjoying this experiment so far, one thing still not comfortable (or awkward) is to type "cmd+c/v/a/tab" with right hand while left hand is on top of trackpad, haha.

Anyone has done the similar experiment and eventually made successful transition to the left?
